1 How to use EquationEditor_Examples.txt with the Equation Editor function on the ENA Network Analyzer Document revision: Document history: 2008/11/25 First release This document explains how to use the EquationEditor_Examples.txt file with ENA Equation Editor function. [Note] In this document, a front-panel key is enclosed in [ ] brackets and a softkey is shown in a bold font. (Examples: front-panel key [Analysis], softkey Conversion) [Notice] 1) In order to use the history function of the ENA Equation Editor, you have to install the following firmware revision. Required firmware revision: A or later. Procedures for using "EquationEditor_Examples.txt" file: 1. Copy the "EquationEditor_Examples.txt" to the "D:\Agilent\Equation" folder on the ENA. Figure 1. 2 [Notice] The original "EquationEditor_Examples.txt" should be saved as separate file from history.txt. The f reason is described in the E5071C Help Manual: The History List is stored as a text file D:\Agilent\Equation\history.txt and can save a maximum of 50 lines (equations) with a maximum of 254 characters per line (equation). 2. Open the EquationEditor_Examples.txt file in Notepad by double-clicking on the file name. Figure 2. Equation Editor 3. Open the Equation Editor as follows. Go to [Display] > Equation Editor Click the selection button in the Equation Editor dialog box. (shown as 5 in Figure 2). Then, the Equation History dialog box will open. (see Figure 3.) 2

3 Figure 3. Show equation history 4. Click on the Edit History button in the Equation History dialog box. 5. Copy and paste the equations that you want to use from the EquationEditor_Examples.txt file to history.txt. You should paste equations on the top of text in the history.txt. [Note] If you want to delete some or all of existing equations in the history.txt, delete them before pasting the equations. 6. Save the history.txt file by clicking on File > Save on the Notepad menu bar. 7. Close the history.txt by clicking File > Exit on the Notepad menu bar. 8. Click on the selection button again on the Equation Editor (shown as 5 in Figure 2). You can see now the equations that you pasted in the Equation History dialog box. 9. Select an equation that you want to use by highlighting the equation, and then clicking on OK in the Equation History dialog box. (see Figure 3.) 10. Click Apply. (see Figure 4.) 3

4 Figure 4. Click on Apply and the equation title is displayed in the trace title area (Ls_S11) 11. Click Close to close the dialog box. 12. Set the Equation softkey to ON under [Display] front-panel key on the ENA. The equation becomes visible and annotation of [Equ] (see 2b in Figure 2) is displayed in the trace title area. The equation label becomes a display label of the selected trace. (shown as 2c in Figure 2.) 5 [Note for impedance parameter conversion equations] The equation examples contain L, C, R, Q and D conversion equations. The Z, Y, R, X, G and B conversions are not included. However, if you want to display equivalent impedance (Z) or equivalent admittance (Y), you can use the Conversion function which exists under [Analysis] > Conversion on the ENA. You can also display R, X, G or B by using the Conversion function. For example, if you want to display the R or X trace, turn any Z Conversion function ON and set the [Format] to Real (for R) or Imaginary (for X). If you want to display G or B, do the same thing with Y Conversion. Please refer to the E5071C online Help Manual for more detail. The impedance parameter equations in the "EquationEditor_Examples.txt" file assume that system impedance Z0 is 50 ohm and you need to use the Real format to display the conversion result. You must not change the [Cal] > Set Z0 value from 50 ohm, and the Port Z Conversion must be set to OFF or use 50 ohm ([Analysis] > Fixture Simulator > Port Z Conversion) on the ENA. 5
