2 WebDAV Part 5 Tools for working with content in WebCT This section covers: WebDAV (Web Folders and Goliath) Editing files with Netscape Communicator Managing your uploaded files with WebCT's File Manager has always been a slow process due to the Web browser's limitation of being able to handle just one file at a time. WebDAV overcomes this limitation and makes managing your WebCT files as easy as dragging your files from one folder to another. WebDAV stands for "Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning" ( It is a set of extensions to the http protocol that allows users to collaboratively edit and manage files on remote Web servers. Use of WebDAV has been enabled on our ITS WebCT server. In order to take advantage of this feature you will need to have software that understands how to use WebDAV. If you are using Microsoft Windows 98 or have Office 2000 installed, you have all that is needed in the form of "Web Folders". Macintosh users will need to download "Goliath" to take advantage of WebDAV. Recent versions of GoLive, Dreamweaver, and Photoshop have built-in support for WebDAV. In addition to the required software (view above), three pieces of information are needed to start using WebDAV: your mywebct username your mywebct password the Web address for your WebCT course files The Web address for your course files is specified using the following format: Page - 1

Click on the "My Computer" icon on your computer's desktop.

4 WebDAV for Windows You have all the tools you need to use WebDAV if you have Windows 98 or Office 2000 installed. Click on the "My Computer" icon on your computer's desktop. Double-click on the "Web Folders" icon to bring up the following screen. Click on "Add Web Folder". Page - 3

Click on the "Next >" button. Window will prompt you for a username and password.

5 The following screen should appear. Enter the Web address for your course files (refer to page 2). Click on the "Next >" button. Window will prompt you for a username and password. Enter your mywebct username and password for your designer account. Uncheck the "Save this password in your password list" box as a security measure. Click the "OK" button. Page - 4

6 Windows will prompt you to name the resulting Web Folder. This Web Folder will appear in the "Web Folders" area, so name this something recognizable such as your course ID name. For example: if you were creating a folder for a Nursing 747 course, the window name could be: NURS747 Click "Finish" when done. Your results should look similar to the following. Click on the icon of the Web folder you just created, in this case it is "kchan on webct hawaii". Page - 5

7 A window will appear with a list of all current course files on the WebCT server in your WebCT designer course account. To copy a file onto the server, simply drag it from one folder into your Web folder (in this case we are copying a file named "sample2.html"). Page - 6

Goliath for Macintosh Download a current version of Goliath from <www.webdav.

Upon successful completion, you should see something similar to the following.

Goliath will prompt you for a URL, this is the Web address for your course (refer to page 2).

8 Goliath for Macintosh Download a current version of Goliath from < in this case we used version Double-click on the downloaded file to install Goliath. Upon successful completion, you should see something similar to the following. Click on the Goliath icon to start the application. Goliath will prompt you for a URL, this is the Web address for your course (refer to page 2). Enter your username and password for your designer account. Click "OK" button. Goliath will display a window listing all of your current course files. To copy a file to your WebCT course account, drag and drop the file icon into the Goliath window. Page - 7

Editing with Netscape Communicator If you have Netscape Communicator installed on your computer you can use Netscape's Composer to edit your filed directly from WebCT's "Manage Files" menu.

Once inside your account, click on the text link for "Manage Files", located in the "Control Panel Visible to Designers". Scroll down and click on the file name "technonic.

9 Editing with Netscape Communicator If you have Netscape Communicator installed on your computer you can use Netscape's Composer to edit your filed directly from WebCT's "Manage Files" menu. Open Netscape Communicator, enter the address for WebCT ( click on the text link for "mywebct" located under the header for "Returning Users" and log into your account. Once inside your account, click on the text link for "Manage Files", located in the "Control Panel Visible to Designers". Scroll down and click on the file name "technonic.html" (this is the file we will work with during this demo). Your screen should look similar to the following. From an "HTML" perspective, the screen you see is composed of several "frames". In this case, the navigation menu is one, the "tectonic.html" file is in another, and the white area about it is in yet another frame. Frame Frame Frame Click on the "frame" for the tectonic.html file (but not on the map itself, there are text links associated with it that may take you to another location) to select tell WebCT that this particular frame is what you are working with. It has many of the features of a word processor, but it works with HTML files.

10 From the file menu for Netscape Composer, select "File", scroll down and click on "Edit frame". Netscape will open a new "Composer" window with the contents of "tectonic.html". It should look similar to the following. Netscape Composer is an HTML editor. It has many of the features of a word processor, but it works with HTML files. Select the text "On Shaky Ground", by clicking and dragging your mouse over the words to highlight it. From the font size pull down menu, select "36", then release your mouse button. Your resulting file should look similar to the following. Continue making additional text changes, experimenting with changing font color and format. Page - 9

11 saving changes Once you had finished editing the HTML file, in the Netscape's menu select "File", then "Publish". Netscape will bring up a dialog box similar to this (it may vary based on the version of Netscape Communicator that you have and the computer platform you are using). The key thing to enter is the name of the file that you want to save these revisions to (in this case "tectonic.html"). Since we were editing this file from within your "Manage Files" area, Netscape Communicator will remember your username and password. Page - 10

12 If you enter a different filename, Netscape will save your changes with a different filename leaving your original file untouched, basically making a copy. Once the file name has been typed into the appropriate area, select the "Publish" button. For Window users, the file name is already added, there is no need to type it in, just click the "Publish" button. Upon successful completion, Netscape will give you a dialog box similar to the following. Click the "OK" button to continue. Page - 11
