2 Overview This document is to help you prepare a newly installed OS X Macintosh computer for use with SeaSonde. If your computer is currently running OS 9, you will need to either obtain a newer computer with OS X or you will need to backup all your current data and setup files, and perform a clean install of OS X SeaSonde10 will not work properly if you leave SeaSonde4 applications on the computer. (You can install any version of 10.3, if you can connect to the Internet and perform a Software Update after the install) Before you start, confirm that the computer meets the minimum requirements for proper SeaSonde operation. You can find the system specs by selecting About This Mac under the Apple menu. Then click the Get More Info button to see the systems profile: Recommended Configuration Macintosh G4 500MHz, (PowerBook, or Desktop) 256MB RAM 10GB hard disk with OS X or later (You can install 10.3 and then use the Software Update ) USB 1.0 Minimal Configuration Macintosh G3 500MHz, (ibook, PowerBook, or Desktop) 256MB RAM 4GB hard disk with OS X USB 1.0 A modem supporting speeds of 33kbps or an Ethernet Internet connection is required to qualify for full COS Staff Technical Support. See the Communication_Support document for more details.

3 Computer First Time Setup: If you have just finished installing OS X or are turning on a brand new computer for the first time, the computer will open with a Welcome screen after booting up. Please follow these directions. 1) In the Welcome box (after the music stops), select country (US default), keyboard layout (US is recommended), Skip (i.e. click continue) the Your Apple ID page after checking the Don t create an Apple ID for me. Kill the registration form without entering name/address) using the Apple (command) + Q keys. Select Skip when the dialog box appears 2) In the Create Your Account dialog window fill in: Name box with codar (use lowercase) Short Name box (it will be automatically filled with codar when you click there. Password box and enter "tnes" for the password NOTE: The password for OSX is now four characters. The OS9 tne password is no longer used. Password Hint box with standard OSX password Skip over the picture selection and click the Continue button. You may use another password if desired; however if you desire Codar customer support to access your site, we will need to know the password. 3) In the Select Time Zone chose your city or zone. If you plan to use GMT, use Reykjavik, Iceland as this zone does not switch back and forth between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time. London does. After the system is running changing the Timezone to an earlier time will result in previous data being overwritten for the number of hours the Timezone changed. When Daylight Savings sets the time back 1hour the previous hour of data will be lost. When Daylight Savings sets the time forward 1hour there will appear to be a 1hour data gap. WARNING: All SeaSondes in the same network MUST have the same Time zone, Date, and Time, for combining radial vectors into total vector currents. Different Times, and Time zones will cause invalid total vectors to be produced. 4) Set the Date and Time, click Continue then Done. 5) Optional: Change the name of your hard disk (default is Macintosh HD). OS X no longer requires the name Codar Data but feel free to use this, but our OSX preference is not use spaces in folder names; try using CodarData instead. Change the name by clicking the cursor in the text line Macintosh HD under the disk icon and then edit the name.

4 System Preference Settings: Figure 1 System Preferences Window After setting up your network connections (later in this document) you will be able to connect to the Internet (requires a modem or Ethernet connection) and an Internet service provider and run the "Software Update program to install the most up-to-date version of OS X. Software Update is located in the System Preferences folder. If you do not have an Internet connection, you can still use another computer, which does to locate and download possible updates at Then transfer the updater to the OS X computer. The updaters are usually disk image files (.dmg), which can be transferred from any computer system. On OS X, double-clicking the file will create a new volume disk on the desktop, which will contain the updater package to open and run. Steps 7-14 refer to selections in various System Preferences panels (see System Preference icons in Figure 1). 7) Pull down the Apple Menu and select System Preferences. Then select the Desktop & Screen Saver panel (i.e. icon), click the Desktop tab and set the Desktop to Solid Colors using Solid Aqua Blue. This optimizes visibility for black and white Timbuktu sessions. Click the Screen Saver tab. If you chose to use the screen saver, we recommend the default screen saver settings. Do NOT enable the hot corners button or check the use random screen saver checkbox. Click the Show All button to display all preference icons again.

5 8) Select the Dock icon in System Preferences and shrink the dock size to approx. 3/4 inch or 2cm on your screen. We recommend that you keep the dock location at the bottom, with the Animate opening applications, the Automatically hide and show the Dock and the Magnification boxes unchecked as these will slow down a Timbuktu control session. Click and drag the Apple application shortcuts upwards and off of the dock except for the Finder and System Preferences. They will disappear in a puff of smoke when you release the mouse button. You will be removing, Safari, Mail, ichat, Address Book, itunes, iphoto, imovie, ical, QuickTime Player and the Apple- Mac OS X icon near the trash can. Click the Show All tab again. 9) Click the Energy Saver icon. Click the Sleep tab at the top of the window. Move the slider for Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for: option to the never position. Uncheck the Put the hard disk to sleep when possible. 10) Click the Energy Saver Options tab and checkmark the Wake for Ethernet network administrator access and the Restart automatically after power failure. The other boxes should be unchecked. Click the Show All preferences icon. 11) Click the Network icon. The Network port configurations are normally limited to Ethernet and Internal Modem. We recommend configuring both because they do not conflict with each other and this provides two options for access. Select Network Port Configurations under the Show: window. Checkmark (enable) the Built-in Ethernet and Internal Modem ports (see Figure 2 below)

12) Click the Sharing icon. Under the Services tab enter the name SeaSondeSite- XXXX (where XXXX is the four character site name). The Rendezvous name is not used.

13) Click the OS9 icon under the System Preferences. Check the Warn before starting Classic box. Running OS9 applications in Classic mode will interfere with proper SeaSonde operation.

Checkmark (enable) the Personal File Sharing, Remote Login, FTP Access, Apple Remote Desktop, and Remote Apple Events services. Close the window and return to the System Preferences. 13) Click the OS9 icon under the System Preferences. Check the Warn before starting Classic box. Running OS9 applications in Classic mode will interfere with proper SeaSonde operation. Checking the Warn.. box will give you an opportunity to exit Classic mode if OS9 applications are accidentally launched. Return to the System Preferences menu. 14) Click the Software Update icon and uncheck (disable) automatic checking 15) Add DropStuff (available from Aladdin Systems, StuffitExpander and Terminal application icons to the dock. Applications can be added to the dock by dragging the application s icon onto the dock. The StuffitExpander and TextEdit icons can be found in the /Applications folder and the Terminal program in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder. The applications can be launched conveniently by clicking their dock icons. 16) Timbuktu (or higher) is required for OS X 10.3 and higher. Use a Netopia Timbuktu install disk or Timbuktu install disk image (e.g. TimbuktuPro.smi) to install the software. Run the installer and enter a valid license code. Restart the computer. Then under the Timbuktu Setup menu->preferences pulldown->general tab, uncheck the Display Button Text and the Show splash screen when application starts up options. Delete the About file from Startup items folder located inside the Timbuktu application folder. Select the Timbuktu Setup menu->define Users menu and create a codar account with "tnes" as the password. Check or uncheck the services as illustrated in Figures 5, 6 and 7 for the codar, Guest and Ask for Permission accounts. Figures 5,6 & 7 Timbuktu codar, Guest and Ask for Permission accounts

The installer will not overwrite or delete existing data and configuration files; however we cannot be held responsible for any lost data. You should always backup your important data and config files before running any installer. Insert the SeaSondeCombineSuite10 CD. A window should appear showing the CD contents. Double-click CombineSuite_Install_Notes.rtf Read the install notes for any last minute updates or features. Double-click InstallSeaSondeDocs Follow the directions. This installs all the pdf documentation in /codar/seasonde/docs folder on your harddisk.

10 Double-click InstallMapDataBase Follow the directions. This installs all the database files needed by SeaDisplaySetup in order to create a SeaDisplay site map to plot radials or totals with. Double-click SeaSondeCombineSuite10. This will start the software installer. The first step in the installer shows the CombineSuite _Install_Notes.rtf previously noted. If you are not ready to install the software, then quit the installer with a Apple (command) + Q; otherwise, click Continue.

The second step is to read and then choose to accept the licensing agreement. The next step installs all the applications to your computer. Check mark which items you wish to run.

After SeaSondeCombineSuite is installed, you have the option to run the various sub installers, which are located in Codar/SeaSonde/Apps/Installations.

SeaSondeCombineSuite installs all the combine software. After SeaSondeCombineSuite is installed, you have the option to run the various sub installers, which are located in Codar/SeaSonde/Apps/Installations. Each sub installer may require your password as they may install some items into the system folder. Run Install AutoAnswerPPP installs the automatic modem call answering. If you do not want call answering and/or have ethernet access, then un-checkmark this installer. Run Install BillsScripting installs BillsScripting addition, which is used to help restart the computer and also to set the computer s date & time.

12 Run Install Sentinel Startup installs a User startup item to launch the Combine Sentinel application each time the computer starts up. The Combine Sentinel then launches all other real-time applications required for SeaSonde Combine. Run Install Telnet Startup installs a User startup item to launch Telnet services. This is not recommended for sites with continuous Internet access as Telnet has minimal security features. Run SeaDisplay Startup installs a User startup item to launch SeaDisplay each time the computer starts. This is so that SeaDisplay will plot the latest total vector results realtime. Run WaveDisplay Startup installs a User startup item to launch WaveDisplay each time the computer starts. When you click Install, the installer will then first install all the SeaSondeCombineSuite applications. Then it will run a utility to optimize the SeaSonde applications for quicker launching on OS X. Next the installer will run each select Run sub installer and wait for them to finish. After you finish with all sub installers, the install is then finished.

13 Click Quit button to quit the installer.

If you have any problems with the installers, locate the CodarInstall.log in your system volume (CodarData) and send it to Codar Customer Support. And finally, you should restart the computer. Sentinel should start up and after a pause start all the other SeaSonde applications.

15 Finishing Touches: OS X 10.3 and higher features a tool bar on the left side of each new window. You can activate this feature by bringing Finder to the foreground and selecting Preferences under the Finder pull down menu. Select the appropriate sidebar options (Figure 14). Now open a new window by double-clicking the hard disk icon, drag all of the unused items (e.g. Documents, Movies, Pictures) off the sidebar and add (by dragging) the following folder onto the side bar: Apps, Configs, RadialSites and Totals. Now add SeaDisplay to the dock by dragging its icon onto the dock. Feel free to add additional SeaSonde applications and folders that you use frequently. When you have completed the installation your desktop and dock should look similar to the one below (Figure 15).

For a new system you will need to create a SeaDisplay_Site_XXXX site map file using SeaDisplaySetup. Save the site map to Codar/SeaSonde/Configs/SiteDefinitions. Then you will need to use the site map file with SeaDisplay to create and install Grid files into /Codar/SeaSonde/Configs/CombineConfigs/. Lastly you will need to set up the FileExchange to automatically copy radials and other files from remote Radial Sites.
