CAMBER AND ELEVATION PROGRAM USER S MANUAL 1. INSTALLATION 2. SETUP 3. RUN CAMBER PROGRAM 4. RUN ELEVATION PROGRAM 5. RUN DECK ELEVATION PROGRAM 6. LIMITATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS BY THE BRIDGE ENGINEERING SOFTWARE AND TECHNOLOGY (BEST) CENTER DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND COLLEGE PARK, MD OCTOBER
1. Installation Copy CAMBER V MVBA or CAMBER V MVBA, which contains CAMBER, ELEVATION and DESCK ELEVATION programs, to any folder in a local hard disk. In this manual, it is assumed that the program is copied to C:\CAMBER. When finish copy, rename the file to CAMBER.MVBA. The VBA environment of Microstation V8 is not compatible to previous releases since CAMBER V MVBA is for version or later, and CAMBER V MVBA is for any version prior to Setup Once the program is installed in the local computer, it is ready to be run in any Microstation work session by using the commands provided in the VBA project manager, which is available in Utilities/Macro/Project Manager. A simpler way to run the program is given in a key-in format; thus the user can easily create a tool-bar menu and link with it. Follow the instructions below to make the key-in available. a) Start Microstation V8 b) Start the Configuration dialog, which resides in Workspace menu. c) In the configuration dialog, go down to the bottom of the list on the left and highlight the Visual Basic for Application item. d) In the list on the right, highlight Names of standard projects and press Select. e) In the next dialog box, select the camber program. In this manual, it is C:\CAMBER\CAMBER.MVBA. f) When the configuration dialog box is shown, press OK and answer Yes to save the changes. g) Exit the Microstation. h) When the Microstation starts next time, the following key-in commands are ready to start the program. VBA RUN CAMBER to run the camber program VBA RUN ELEVATION to run the elevation program VBA RUN DECELEVATION to run the deck elevation program Follow the user s manual for Microstation to attach the above key-in command to a tool-bar button. 3. Run the CAMBER program Start the CAMBER program by using either the key-in demonstrated above or the user-created tool-bar; a message box, as shown in Figure 1, will appear on screen. Press OK to go on. 2
Figure 1 - The message box of the Camber program The girder group name dialog box will open on the screen as shown in Figure 2. In the dialog box, enter the girder group name. The girder group names are the LOCATION OF CAMBER and the LOCATION OF DEFLECTION as shown in the prototype tables. Use CTRL+ENTER to separate lines, rather than a simple ENTER. Figure 2 - The dialog box to enter the girder group name Press OK when the group name is entered. The file selection dialog, as shown in Figure 3, will open. Figure 3 - The GRH file selection dialog box 3
In the MERLIN-DASH GRH file selection dialog, select the GRH file for the current girder group. The camber values, A, B and C, and the deflection values, X and Y, are read from the GRH file. When the GRH file is selected, press Open to go on. The RES file selection dialog box will open as shown in Figure 4. GRH files were generated from the DASH run and have to exist before running the CAMBER program. The camber value, D, is read from the RES file created by the Bridge Geometry (BDGM) program. Select the correct RES file for the current girder group and then press OK. Figure 4 - The RES file selection dialog box Figure 5 - The line selection dialog box 4
Since more than one line are usually given in the RES file, a line selection dialog box as shown in Figure 5 will appear on screen. Highlight the line for the current group and then press OK. The camber due to the vertical curve of the current girder group will be read from the RES file according to the selected line. When the selection in Figure 5 is done, the girder group name enter dialog box, as shown in Figure 2, will open again. The program loops for each girder group. For each group, the user needs to provide the group name in Figure 2, GRH file in Figure 3, RES file in Figure 4, and to select a line or a girder for vertical curve camber in Figure 5. Even if some different girder groups share the same camber or deflection values, the user must designate them for each group. If the camber due to vertical curve for a multiple span bridge is separated into different RES files according to different spans, the RES files must be merged together before running the program. The order should be from the first span to the last span. When all the group names and the above information are completely entered, press No More Group in Figure 2. A setting dialog box, as shown in Figure 6 will open. Figure 6 - The setting dialog box The setting consists of two parts, one for text and one for the grid lines. The Level, Color and Weight are Microstation graphic entity parameters. The Text Size is the size of the text in the table, and Grid Height and Width define the size of the table cell. By default, the settings exactly match those in prototype tables. Note that the levels entered in Figure 6 must exist in the DGN file before running the CAMBER program. See Limitations and Requirements for more information. Press OK to continue. Pick the origin point of the table in the DGN drawing. The camber and the deflection tables will be automatically generated according to the GRH and RES files after the origin point is placed. 5
If the user right clicks while picking the origin point, the program will be terminated and no table will be generated. 4. Run the ELEVATION program Start the Elevation program by using either the key-in demonstrated in Section 2 or the user created tool-bar; a message box, as shown in Figure 1, will show on screen. Press OK to go on. The MERLIN-DASH DAT file section dialog box will open on the screen as shown in Figure 7. In the dialog box, enter the DAT file, in which the elevation information is stored. Figure 7 - The DAT file selection dialog box Press Open to open the selected file. The elevation setting dialog box for the profile will open as Figure 8. It has four different types of information in the elevation setting dialog, scales for horizontal and vertical direction, graphic properties, seat and stiffener parameters and the location of splices. The horizontal and vertical scale can be different and the meaning of the scale is how many feet of the bridge equal to per inch on the paper. The level, color and weight properties have the same meanings as the CAMBER program. The default values will be appropriate for most cases. The height of the seat is the distance between the bottom of the flange and the top of the seat. The thick is the dimension in vertical and width is in longitudinal. The offset is the distance between the end of the girder and the support center. The stiffener width is the width of the stiffener, dimension in longitudinal. These parameters should be compatible with each other and with the geometry in the data file. 6
The Bolted Field Splice Locations is a multi-selectable list. Hold CTRL key to select more than one item. The location of the splice is always at left side of a member. In this list, the distances between the first support and the left side of each member are listed. Figure 8 The Elevation Settings dialog box When the setting is done, click OK to continue. The following message box will open. Figure 9 Contraflexure and shear connector message box If the RES file that contains contraflexure and shear connector data is available, press Yes, otherwise press No to skip drawing contraflexure and shear connectors. Press Cancel to stop the program. If Yes is pressed in Figure 9, a file selection dialog, as shown in Figure 4, will open. Select the RES file associated with the data file selected in Figure 7 and press Open in Figure 4 to continue. The shear connector customization dialog box, as shown in Figure 10, will open. 7
Figure 10 Shear connector customization dialog box DASH calculates the required shear connector pitches within their specific ranges and lists them in Table B for WSD or Table B for LFD/LRFD. In the Recommended block, Space and Length are from DASH program while No. is the number of spaces calculated and rounded by the utility program. Total is the length accumulation of each varied pitch segment. Taking the numbers from the Recommended block, Customized block lists out the same numbers of rows (No.) and Spaces but calculates the true Lengths within their specific ranges and Total accumulative lengths. The following lists the instructions to customize the shear connector arrangement: Click over a segment to highlight it. Press Delete to delete the highlighted segment. Enter a number of spaces and space in No. and Space respectively, then press Insert to insert this segment before the highlighted segment, or press Modify to replace the highlighted segment with this segment. Double click the highlight segment to copy its values to No. and Space. Press Move Up and Move Down respectively to move the highlighted segment up and down. Enter the distance of the first shear connector from the left support of the bridge in First offset. Press Check is to check whether the customized connectors cover the scope recommended and whether the customized connectors sparser than recommended. Press As recommended to refresh to the beginning with recommended values. Press As Previous to recollect segment data previously customized when OK was pressed. Press OK to accept customized numbers and start the drawing Press Cancel to abandon the drawing. 8
After the customization of shear connector is confirm by pressing OK in Figure 10, or after it is skipped by pressing No in Figure 9, pick a point as the origin in the DGN drawing. The elevation will be generated after the origin point is placed. If right click while picking the origin point, the program will be terminated and no elevation will be generated. If the contraflexure and shear connector data is submitted, the utility program will also extract information of Tension-Compression-Reversal areas from DASH output Table C for WSD or Table B for LFD/LRFD. The Tension- Compression-Reversal areas will be dimensioned in the elevation. 5. Run the DECK ELEVATION program Start the Deck Elevation program by using either the key-in demonstrated in Section 2 or the user created tool-bar; a message box, as shown in Figure 1, will show on screen. Press OK to go on. The RES file section dialog box will open on the screen as shown in Figure 4. In the dialog box, enter the RES file, in which the deck elevation information is stored. The span selection dialog will open as shown in Figure 11. The spans the RES file contains will be listed in this dialog box. The DECK ELEVATION program can generate only one span of the deck elevation drawing in one run. User has to restart the program to generate other spans. Select the span number to generate in Figure 11 and press OK. Figure 11 - The span selection dialog box The deck elevation settings dialog box will open as shown in Figure 12. 9
Figure 12 - The Deck Elevation Settings dialog box The level, color and weight properties have the same meanings as the CAMBER program. The default values will be appropriate for most cases. User can also change the text size of the elevation marks and that of other text on the drawing, such as the girder or line name and the interval marks. The arrow size in the drawing and the tile size are proportional to the elevation text size and other text size. Pick a point as the origin in the DGN drawing. The deck elevation will be generated after the origin point is placed. If right click while picking the origin point, the program will be terminated and no drawing will be generated. 6. Limitations and Requirements a) The intervals specified in any MERLIN-DASH GRH file should be only 4, 8, 10, 16 or 20. The program will give an error message box as shown in Figure 13 and will exit if the interval is not correct. Figure 13 - The error message box b) The span number, intervals and the length for each span defined in the MERLIN-DASH GRH files must be identical, otherwise the program will give an error message box saying the span number, interval or span length are different. c) For a multiple span bridge, MERLIN-BDGM RES files for each span must be merged together in order from the first span to the last span. If the camber values due to the vertical curve are missed for a span in the RES file, the program will give an error message saying which span is missed and will stop. 10
