1 METBD 110 Hands-On 13 Exploded Assembly 1. Open the assembly file created in Hands-On 12. IMPORTANT: For consistent success, use ONLY the method shown in this handout!! 2. Select the View Manager Icon select the Explode tab New button you may use the name assigned or type in a new one press the Enter key select Edit Position icon 3. To move the parts, select Translate. 4. Select the appropriate Motion Reference. For the figure below, Entity/Edge was selected. a. Select an edge to use for the translation direction. This selection will determine the direction the part will explode. For example, in the figure below a vertical edge on the base piece was selected. This means, the other three parts will only move in an up or down direction. Hint: Before you start you want to reduce the displayed size of the assembly and move it to the bottom of the screen, In order to have enough space to move the other parts up. 10/09/ hands-on-13-exploded.doc 1 of 7

2 b. Select the component you wish to move, i.e., upside down bracket, and drag above the base part. Do NOT over lap any portion of the parts. Important: Clear space between parts. c. Select the next part, i.e., clevis pin, and drag it above the second part. Try to keep spacing between parts equal in size. 10/09/ hands-on-13-exploded.doc 2 of 7

3 d. The hairpin must be moved in to assembly position. In order for this to happen, it must be moved in two different directions. One to the height of the hole it will be inserted. Taking the time to zoom in and make sure the axis lines are aligned will save you time later on. e. A new Motion Reference must be selected, in order to move the hairpin away from clevis pin. Turn on datum axis select the arrow in the Motion Reference section select the axis for the hole in the clevis pin click on the hairpin and move it to new location. Remember it cannot overlap any other parts. f. When finished positioning parts, select OK. 10/09/ hands-on-13-exploded.doc 3 of 7

4 g. It is important to show how the parts are assembled, i.e., center of shaft to center of hole, right front corner to right front corner, etc. (See figure in step h.) A phantom line is used to show the assembly path. While still in View Manager select Set Default Line Style icon Font to PHANTOMFONT, Color to GEOMETRY Apply Close. edit Line Notice the offset lines may be created, modified (redefine), deleted, and line style changed. h. Select Create Offset Lines icon (Axis) select the center of the circle in the base part. i. Select the center of the bottom of the clevis pin. 5 j. Add the offset line for the hairpin. Select Axis click on the axis of the small hole in the clevis pin (on the side closest to the hairpin) click on the hairpin axis (on the end closest to the clevis pin) Quit. Results: Problems that need fixed: If the offset lines are too long, this is because you picked the top of the hitch pin (instead of the bottom) and/or the bottom of the hole in the base (instead of the top of the hole). You can either delete the offset line and try again, or modify it. 10/09/ hands-on-13-exploded.doc 5 of 7

6 Notice the jog in the offset line above. To fix this you must go back to step 2 and realign the hairpin. You must exit the Explode Position dialog box in order for the offset line to update. k. When finished, select <<List button Edit button Save OK. If Save is grayed out, you forgot to press the Enter key after creating the New explode. l. To edit the exploded view, select Properties. 7 5. Save the assembly file. 6. Turn off the axes datums and print a copy of the part file, with label and unshaded, and show your instructor. (See Printing instructions in File Manipulation handout Print from within Sketcher.) 7. Collapse the assembly select View Explode Unexplode. Do NOT, I repeat do NOT use Edit Position and Offset Lines listed here or you will have problems in your drawing file. Use the View Manager instead. 8. Toggle back to the current exploded state select View Explode Explode View. Key To Successs in Learning Pro/E Take the Time to Play: 1. Save a copy of the assembly file give it a name like Trash. When it asks if you want to re-use the original part files select OK. 2. Close the current file and open the copy. 3. Play with this exploded assembly. a. To modify an exploded assembly, go back to View Manager Explode Properties (from here you may edit the position, offset lines, etc.) b. Make sure you are comfortable with completing the following: i. re-positioning parts. ii. adding jogs to the offset lines. (You will need to know how to do this later.) iii. removing the jogs to the offset lines. iv. deleting the offset lines v. adding offset lines using options other than axis. 4.
