1 reating P files using Jaws for Mac OS 9 Page 1 of 5 This page provides instructions to create a certified P file from QuarkXpress 4.x, Pagemaker , and Inesign P is only as good as the document from which it was produced. When preparing your original document, please follow the igital uidelines section. Please note that all fonts must be embedded in the P, and not all TrueType fonts can be embedded. Type 1 fonts are strongly recommended. s an alternative to P/X-1a, Source Interlink, along with many other publishers, has chosen to support the P (igital istribution of dvertising for Publications) ssociation standards for P files. The following instructions will lead you through the process to create a certified P file. What You Will Need page layout program, QuarkXPress 4.x (preferred), Pagemaker or Inesign dobe istiller version dobe istiller comes standard with dobe crobat (not crobat Reader). crobat 3 is unacceptable for creating a certified P file. Setup Only Has To e one The irst Time Please ownload The ollowing Items: The latest version of the dobeps printer driver, available for Macintosh: The P resources package for Macintosh: Installation To install Jaws P reator on a Macintosh OS 9.1 platform: Temporarily disable any virus detection software. ouble-click the installer application that appears on your desktop when you insert the -ROM into the drive. ollow the on-screen instructions to install Jaws P reator.

2 reating P files using Jaws for Mac OS 9 Page 2 of 5 Jaws Mac OS P Setup (9.1 or later) Once installed you will see two icons, Jaws to P (application icon) and Jaws P reator (desktop printer icon). ouble click the Jaws to P Icon (fig. ). hoose onfigure from the Settings menu. lick the Open ontrol Panel button (fig. ). lick the Settings tab (fig. ). Select Press Ready from the urrent onfiguration drop down menu. lick uplicate. hange the Name to POptimized-Jaws 3.0 (fig. ). lick uplicate. lick on the eneral tab (fig. ). hange P ile ormat: P 1.3, Thumbnail eneration: None, Resolution: 2400, and make sure all checkboxes are unchecked. lick the the dvanced utton (fig. ). rom the Transfer unctions drop down menu select Remove. Make sure the Preserve Overprint heckbox is checked, and make sure all other checkboxes are unchecked. rom the Use %%ounding ox for drop down menu select Nothing. Make sure the Preserve OPI omments checkbox is unchecked. lick OK. lick the Imaging tab (fig. ). rom the three ownsampling drop down menus select on t ownsample. rom the three ompression drop-down menus, select ZIP. Make sure the ompress Text checkbox is checked. lick the ont mbedding tab (fig. H). Make sure all checkboxes are checked. lick the Security tab (fig. I). Make sure the ncrypt P files checkbox is unchecked. lose the Jaws P reator control panel window. nsure that the new configuration (POptimized-Jaws 3.0) is selected in Jaws ToP Settings (fig. J). 3 reating P files using Jaws for Mac OS 9 Page 3 of 5 reating a Jaws P from Quark ach time you wish to generate a P using Jaws P reator, you will need to double-click the Jaws P reator icon located on the desktop. rom the Printing menu select Set efault Printer. hoose Print from the file menu. lick the Page Setup... button (fig. ). rom the Page ttributes dropdown menu select Postscript Options (fig. ). Make sure the Unlimited ownloadable onts checkbox is checked, and all other checkboxes are unchecked. lick OK. In the main print dialog box, click on the ocument tab (fig. ). Make sure all checkboxes are unchecked, Page Sequence is ll, Registration is centered, Tiling is Off, leed is.125" and Offset is 12 pts. lick on the Setup tab (fig. ). Set the Printer escription to Jaws P reator. (hange the Paper Width and Paper Height by adding 1 inch to the trim size in both the Paper Height and Width. This will eliminate the large paper size). Make sure Reduce or nlarge is 100% and set the Page Positioning to enter. Paper Offset and Page ap should be 0, and it in Print rea should be unchecked. lick on the Output tab (fig. ). Set Print olors to omposite MYK (or rayscale for a lack and White ad), Halftoning to Printer, and Resolution to 2400 dpi. Make sure that only the process colors (yan, Magenta, Yellow and lack) are displayed in the lower half of the window. If additional colors are displayed, corrections must be made by converting all spot colors to process colors, unless specifically purchased. lick on the Options tab (fig. ). Quark PostScript rror Handler and Negative Print should be unchecked. Page lip should be None, Output: Normal, ata: inary, OPI: Include Images. Overprint PS lack and ull Resolution TI Output should both be checked. lick on the Preview tab (fig. ). Make sure the ad and registration marks fit within the page outline. lick on the Printer (NOT the Print button) (fig. H). new dialog box will appear. Locate the drop down menu beneath Printer (currently labeled eneral) and change it to ackground Printing. lick on the oreground radio button. rom the estination drop-down menu select Printer. hange the drop down menu from ackground Printing to olor Matching (fig. I). Set Print olor to olor/rayscale. hange the drop-down menu from olor Matching to ont Settings (fig. J). Next to the Preferred ormat click on the Type 1 radio button. Make sure the lways download needed fonts checkbox is checked and all other checkboxes are unchecked. Make sure to click Save Settings to keep these settings for all future ads. I H J lick Print. Wait patiently for a Save window to appear (fig. K). hoose the destination. t this point you may choose to change the Name. Under the onfiguration drop-down menu select POptimized-Jaws 3.0. lick Save. Wait a few minutes (depending on your file size), and the P will appear at the destination you selected. You may check the status of your P by double clicking the Jaws P reator icon (desktop printer icon). **Note: To resume regular printing, you must select a different printer from the hooser. In the document window, select the Jaws P reator PP from the PP drop down menu (fig. ). You must also see Jaws P reator as your Printer (which is located above the PP drop-down menu). lick on the Paper tab (fig. ). Use the Size drop down menu to select an appropriate paper size or choose ustom to set (fig. ) and enter a width and height one inch larger than the trim size of the document you created. lick OK if necessary to save the custom size. lick on the Options tab (fig. ). Set Send image data to Normal, ata encoding to Send binary image data (if available), ownload fonts to PostScript and TrueType. Make sure all checkboxes are unchecked. lick on the olor tab (fig. ). Make sure the omposite and olor radio buttons are selected. Make sure all four process colors are checked. Set the requency to and the ngle to Make sure all other checkboxes are unchecked. lick MS Setup button (fig. ) and make sure olor Management is turned off and all checkboxes are unchecked, and ignore all other dropdown menus. lick OK to return to the main Print dialog box. lick Print. Wait patiently for a Save window to appear (fig. ). hoose the destination. t this point you may choose to change the name. Under the onfiguration drop-down menu select POptimized-Jaws 3.0. lick Save. You may check the status of your P by double clicking the Jaws P reator icon (desktop printer icon). **Note: To resume regular printing, you must select a different printer from the hooser. reating a Jaws P from Inesign Never use Inesign to export your P file as its P generator is not robust enough to ensure proper printing of your ad. You should only use Inesign to design the ad and create a Jaws P file. Preflighting Your d Within Inesign Inesign allows users to preflight documents from within the program to ensure your ad is ready for print. Please follow the instructions below before creating and submitting your P file. 1 2 Upon creating a new document, do not click the "acing Pages" box (fig. 1). ll ads (even spreads) should be created using single pages. onfirm that the ad is the proper size and that images or other items that bleed extend at least 1/8" beyond trim (fig. 2). Select Preflight under the ile menu and check Summary (fig. 3). This will display any problems and indicate any R color spaces or spot colors being used. 3 4 Next, click on onts (fig. 4) and check the the box that reads Show Problems Only. Make sure no fonts are missing. lick on Links and Images (fig. 5) and check the box that reads Show Problems Only. Make sure that everything is updated and there are no missing images, R images or I profiles. lick on olors and Inks (fig. 6). Make sure all colors are process and there are no spot colors (unless specifically purchased). 6 7

To prevent doing this, follow these steps: or version 1.x: Select nable olor Management in the ile> ocument olor Setting and make sure nable olor Management is deselected. or version 2.x: Select ile> olor Settings and make sure the box for nable olor Management is unchecked. reate a P file. hoose Print from the ile menu. Make sure the Jaws P reator option is selected for Printer (fig. 7) and Jaws P reator is automatically selected for the PP option. Select the Setup option (fig. 8). or Paper Size, choose "ustom". nter a width and height one inch larger than the trim size of the document you created. (or example, if your document's trim size is 7.75" x 10.5", enter a paper size of 8.75" x 11.5".) Under Options, make sure the width and height are 100% and Page Position is entered. Select Marks and leeds (fig. 9). heck the ll Printer's Marks box and make sure offset and all bleed dimensions are all set to 0.125". You can verify that everything is correct by looking at the page preview in the lower left corner (fig. 9). Select Output (fig. 10) and verify omposite MYK is selected for the olor option and Simulate Overprint box is not checked. Now select raphics (fig. 11) and make sure in the images option that Send ata: ll is selected. Under onts, select omplete and check the ownload PP onts checkbox. Postscript should be set to Level 3 and ata ormat should be inary. 7 8 Select dvanced (fig. 12). In the Transparency lattener option, High Resolution should be selected and No other boxes should be checked. lick on the Page Setup button (fig. a13) and select Jaws P reator for ormat. No oxes should be selected for Postscript options. lick OK. Now you are ready to create your P file to your computer by clicking the Print button. new window will appear prompting you name and where to save your P (fig. a14).
