Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Simrad SN90 System description The Simrad SN90 is a directional high frequency fish finding sonar. Due to the high resolution and long range, the SN90 has proven to be a very efficient tool for both trawlers and purse seiners /B

Simrad SN90 Using SN90 on purse seiners For purse seine applications, the transducer is mounted on the port or starboard side of the hull, facing the seine. A Plane beams (Horizontal beams) B Vertical beams C Inspection beam(s) The transducer s protected position prevents damage from the purse wire, and still gives you full control while setting and retrieving the net. The SN90 allows you to run alongside a school of fish and observe, and you can analyse the school without passing over it. This is like using a horizontal mounted echo sounder, but with a lot more accuracy, and with dedicated software and presentation formats. Fish avoidance is minimized, and more accurate information about the fish in the school can be obtained. You can detect unwanted species, catch the correct size and estimate the volume of the school before setting the net. In purse seine operations, the large frequency bandwidth makes the SN90 ideal for both mackerel and tuna, and even for herring /B 7

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Using SN90 on trawlers Trawlers have for many years relied on high resolution echo sounders - such as the Simrad ES70 - to find and estimate their catch. The disadvantage with echo sounders is the fact that they look straight down. A B C Plane beams (Horizontal beams) Vertical beams Inspection beam(s) The SN90 offers the high resolution of an echo sounder, but also a large horizontal range that allows you to find fish - even close to the bottom - from a distance of several hundred meters. The high frequency bandwidth makes the SN90 ideal for species like pollock, cod and saith. During the search phase, a forward looking SN90 is a very efficient tool for all trawlers. Since the transducer is placed in the vessel s bow, the SN90 will not suffer from the acoustic noise generated by the hull, machinery and propellers. The physical installation angle of the transducer must be determined based on the depth in the vessel s normal fishing waters. Even with a fixed installation angle, the SN90 will serve well in other waters too due to the swath and tilt functionality. Specifications and functionality The Simrad SN90 is a unique sonar, both in design and functionality. The composite transducer and the transceiver each uses 256 individual channels for transmission and reception. A large frequency bandwidth is supported, as the SN90 allows you to choose a 0.1 to 40 khz bandwidth with centre frequency from 70 to 120 khz in steps of 1 khz. The bandwidth can be set up individually for each sonar view. The sonar have a horizontal coverage area of maximum 160, and the vertical beam width is typically 6. The beams can be tilted with limits depending on the angle of the transducer installation. In addition to this, five adjustable split-beam inspection beams of typically 6x6 can be used for a more detailed study of a school, such as observing fish behaviour, target strength and biomass. The absence of a hull unit allows for easier and less space demanding installation, and the transducer is either mounted flush with the hull plating, or in a streamlined blister /B

Simrad SN90 The transducer installation removes the chance to get tangled up or damaged by wires, and greatly reduces the risk of being damaged by objects in the water. Note The SN90 can be delivered with a hull unit. Great emphasis has been placed on giving the best possible sonar presentations on a high resolution colour display. Key features The Simrad SN90 is a unique and flexible sonar system. Due to the high resolution and long range, the SN90 has proven to be a very efficient tool for both trawlers and purse seiners. For use on trawlers, the transducer is mounted on the vessel s bow in a "forward looking" position. For purse seine applications, the transducer is mounted on the port or starboard side of the hull, facing the seine. The SN90 allows you to run alongside a school of fish and observe, and you can analyse the school without passing over it. Up to 160 horizontal coverage Up to 160 vertical coverage Up to five separate 6x6 inspection beams Tilt range: -80 to 80 in 1 steps Operational frequency 70 to 120 khz in steps of 1 khz Wide bandwidth Cost efficient solution Hyperbolic FM (Frequency Modulation) Transmissions (also known as "Chirp") Large dynamic range High definition Stabilized beams Easy operation Store and recall sonar data Define and save your own user settings Clear and easily comprehensive sonar data 8 transceiver boards provide 256 individual channels The transducer can be mounted side- or forward looking through the hull plating, in a blister, or by means of a hull unit /B 9

If you enable this, the chosen setting is applied to all the views simultaneously /B 15

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Adjusting the gain You can compare this gain setting with the volume control on your car radio. When the gain is increased, the echoes will appear stronger. Weak echoes will be easier to see. However, since you also increase the acoustic noise in the reception, the SN90 presentations will also show this noise. Too much gain may therefore "distort" the presentation. Procedure 1 Observe the Main menu. 2 Select the Gain button. 3 The following methods can be used for this adjustment. Method 1: Select [+] or [-] to choose the level. Method 2: Select the middle of the button, hold the mouse button depressed. Drag the cursor sideways to increase or decrease the level. Method 3: Select the middle of the button to open the menu. Type the requested value. Note Do not confuse this Gain setting with the TVG (Time Varied Gain) setting /B

Getting started Choosing which views to use The SN90 offers several views. Combinations of these views are organized in presentation modes. Select the presentation mode you wish to use from the tabs on the bottom bar Context The SN90 presents the echo data using different views. All information from one single ping is shown in all views simultaneously. Each view can operate with any operational frequency in the available range, and they can be set up with different operational parameters. A Horizontal view The three lines in the view identify the current horizontal directions of the three Inspection views. The small indicator view in the right corner shows the current tilt. B Vertical view The lines identifies the current tilt of the different inspection beams and the vertical ping. C Inspection views Note that the left Inspection view has a thicker border than the other views. This is because it is presently the "active" view. The small indicator view in the right corner shows the current tilt. Which views to see, and how they are arranged in the SN90 presentation, is controlled by the presentation modes chosen by the tabs on the bottom bar. The following views are available. Horizontal view This view is used in the Purse Seining and Horizontal / Vertical presentation modes /B 17

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide The Horizontal view shows your the area covered by the SN90 "from above". The entire sector (90, 120 or 160 ) is shown. The view also displays the current tilt as well as numerical information. Vertical view This view is used in all presentation modes except classification modes. The Vertical view shows you the "vertical slice" of the echo data. The vertical slice can be set to 80 or 120 degrees opening. You can train the slice approximately 70 degrees to each side (frequency dependent). Numerical information in the view shows you the current range and depth of the cursor position. Inspection views This view is used in all presentation modes. The SN90 offers several inspection beams. Each Inspection view presents one inspection beam. Each inspection beam has an opening angle of 6x6 at 100 khz, and allows you to investigate certain targets in more detail. The information from the inspection beams are presented in their own views. In Purse Seining mode, the tilt of one inspection beam follows the tilt you have selected in the Horizontal view. You can train this beam within the currently selected swath width (90, 120 or 160 ) using the Train buttons on the operating panel. Note You can also use the Bearing and Tilt functions on the Main menu. Plane view This view is used in the Trawl Horizontal and Trawl Vertical presentation mode. The plane view is a flat sector independent of tilt. With -90 degree tilt the plane view still covers a large area while the horizontal just looks straight down. The horizontal view used in e.g. Purse Seining curves with the tilt. This can be visualized in the Beam Visualization under the setup menu. You can change the physical size any view by clicking on the view border, and then drag it to create a larger rectangle. Tip The Docking View function provided by the SN90 allows you to rearrange the physical positions of the views. Each operating mode is presented with a set of views using default positions and sizes. With the Docking View function you can move and re-size these views to change the default presentations. Procedure 1 At the bottom of the SN90 presentation, observe the all the presentation modes. 2 Click any tab on of the bottom bar to choose a presentation mode (view combinations) /B

Drag the border sideways (or up/down) to change the size of the view /B 19

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Choosing the range The sonar range setting defines how "far" you wish the SN90 to detect echoes: the distance from the vessel to the outer edge of the search area. Context In addition to the read-out on the menu button, the current ranges are also shown with the range rings in the Horizontal, Plane and Vertical views, and with the horizontal range lines in the Inspection views. Procedure 1 Observe the Main menu. 2 Locate the Range function. 3 The following methods can be used for this adjustment. Method 1: Select [+] or [-] to choose the level. Method 2: Select the middle of the button to open the menu. Select a value from the options provided. Method 3: Select the middle of the button to open the menu. Type the requested value. You can only do this if you have computer keyboard connected to your Processor Unit. Using the SN90 filters The SN90 offers several filters in the signal path. You can use these filters to enhance the echo presentation, but it is important to understand that the filters are mutually dependent. All the filters are implemented using software algorithms. Context The filters are implemented in a sequence. Noise Filter The Noise Filter function removes unwanted acoustic noise from the SN90 presentation. It will reduce the interference from other acoustic systems (sonars and echo sounders), and reduce the noise from propellers and similar noise sources. Note that the noise filter is applied in two stages in the filter sequence. AGC (Automatic Gain Control) The AGC (Automatic Gain Control) function runs an automatic analysis of the echo strength. The AGC analysis will maintain a proper dynamic range based on all the /B

Getting started current echo values. This is done by automatically reducing the gain if you have reverberation and noise, or increasing the gain if the acoustical conditions permit it. RCG (Reverberation Controlled Gain) The RCG (Reverberation Controlled Gain) controls the receiver processing individually for the receiving beams. It will automatically remove unwanted reverberation from the bottom or from the sea surface. It may however also remove scattered fish from the presentation. Ping-Ping Filter The Ping-Ping Filter analyses the historical information from previous consecutive pings in order to remove unwanted noise and interference from the SN90 presentation. The filters are implemented in a sequence. This makes them mutually dependent. Any change to a filter section early in the sequence will have an effect on the performance of the filters following it. A Noise filter (Part 1) B Gain and Time Varied Gain (TVG) adjustments C Noise filter (Part 2) D E F AGC (Automatic Gain Control) RCG (Reverberation Controlled Gain) Ping-Ping filter The Gain and Time Varied Gain (TVG) functions are not filters, but they are shown here because they will also have an effect on the filter performances. Note By default, each filter setting will only be applied to the currently active view. The active view is identified at the top of the Active menu. Procedure 1 Click in any view to make it active The active view is identified with a thicker border. 2 Select the Active icon. 3 Switch all filters off /B 21

You can also select which tooltips to appear when you move the cursor over the echograms. Colour Setup The Colour Setup dialog box controls the presentation colours used by the SN90. This includes the palette ("skin"), the number of colours in use, and the colour scale. Colour Threshold The Colour Threshold function allows you to reduce or increase the number of colours. This will provide a filtering effect that removes the weakest echoes. Display Gain The Display Gain increases or decreases the strength of the echo presentation. Panel Backlight The buttons on the Operating Panel have built-in lamps to increase the visibility on a dark bridge. The Panel Backlight function allows you to control the intensity of the light in the buttons. Docking View The Docking View function provided by the SN90 allows you to rearrange the physical positions of the views. Each operating mode is presented with a set of views using default positions and sizes. With the Docking View function you can move and re-size these views to change the default presentations /B

Menu system About The SN90 program is released with a specific software version. The About dialog box displays the current version number. The version described in this Quick start guide is 1.4.x /B 37

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Setup menu The Setup menu provides basic functions related to the SN90 installation parameters and its communication with peripheral systems. How to open Select the Setup icon. The icon is located under the Main menu. Select the icon one more time to close the menu. Description Environment Environmental parameters such as salinity, sound speed and water temperature all play an important part to present accurate echo data. Use the Environment parameters to define these values. Depending on the current sea and weather conditions, you may need to change these values frequently. Language You may prefer to use the SN90 with a user interface in your own language. A selection of languages is provided. The Language function allows you to select the language to be used in the SN90 presentations, menus and dialog boxes. Fish Select The Size Distribution information pane shows a histogram of the echoes detected from single fishes. The calculations are based on the fact that different fish species have different echo strength. The echo strength also depends on the operational frequency you use. For various reasons, the fish size presented in the Size Distribution information pane may be inaccurate. The Fish Select dialog box allows you to select the fish species you expect to catch, and manually adjust the size distribution. Tracker No The Tracker No function allows you to choose between different settings for the tracker. Stabilize Heave The SN90 is provided with a built-in electronic stabilization of the sonar beams. In case of a faulty motion reference unit this functionality can be turned Off. Screen Captures When operating the SN90 you may find it useful to make screen captures of the current presentation. This function allows you to choose between a single screen capture or a sequence of screen captures /B

Menu system BITE (Built-In Test Equipment) The SN90 is a computerized Purse Seine and Trawling Sonar. There are hardly any analogue circuitry, and the possibility of traditional troubleshooting is limited. In order to rectify this, a built-in software application is available to offer test and maintenance functionality. The BITE (Built-In Test Equipment) dialog box controls the test and diagnose program that checks the performance of the SN90. Export The Export dialog box allows you to export user settings, configuration files, message logs and information related to the hardware and software troubleshooting. Installation Prior to use, the SN90 must be set up to communicate with the relevant peripherals. This includes the transducer. The Installation dialog box collects all relevant peripherals on individual pages, and allows you to set up the basic parameters related to installation and operation. In most cases, you only need to do this once /B 39

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Active menu The Active menu offers parameters related to current views and data presentations shown by the SN90. How to open Select the Active icon. The icon is located under the Main menu. Select the icon one more time to close the menu. Context sensitivity The choices in the this menu depends on which view in the SN90 presentation that is currently "active". To activate a view, click in it. The "active" view is shown with a thicker border frame. Note Before you can change the operational parameters for a sonar view, you must click in the view to make it "active". The changes you make are by default only valid for the "active" view. Some functions offer an Apply to All choice. If you use this, the chosen setting is applied to all the views simultaneously. Description TVG (Time Varied Gain) When an acoustic pulse is sent through the water, it will gradually lose its energy. The greater the distance between the transducer and the target(s), the greater the loss of energy. The TVG (Time Variable Gain) function is used to compensate the received echo data for the loss of acoustic energy due to geometric spread and absorption. Ping-Ping Filter The Ping-Ping Filter analyses the historical information from previous consecutive pings in order to remove unwanted noise and interference from the SN90 presentation. Pulse Form The Pulse Form function allows you to select between Hyperbolic Frequency Modulated (HFM), Linear Frequency Modulated (LFM) and Continuous Wave (CW) pulses /B

Menu system Bandwidth The Bandwidth function allows you to select the frequency range in the Hyperbolic Frequency Modulated (HFM) transmissions. Frequency The Frequency function allows you set the centre frequency for a Hyperbolic Frequency Modulated (HFM) pulse, Linear Frequency Modulated (LFM) pulse or the frequency for a Continuous Wave (CW) pulse. Horizontal TX Sector The SN90 transmits in a swath with maximum horizontal opening angle 160. By means of the Horizontal Tx Sector function, you can reduce this opening angle to 90, 120 or 160. Vertical TX Sector The SN90 transmits in a swath with maximum vertical opening angle 160. Range Projection The Range Projection function allows you to control how the horizontal view presents the echoes; either as a horizontal distance, or along the tilt angle. AGC (Automatic Gain Control) The AGC (Automatic Gain Control) function runs an automatic analysis of the echo strength. The AGC analysis will maintain a proper dynamic range based on all the current echo values. This is done by automatically reducing the gain if you have reverberation and noise, or increasing the gain if the acoustical conditions permit it. RCG (Receiver Controlled Gain) The RCG (Reverberation Controlled Gain) controls the receiver processing individually for the receiving beams. It will automatically remove unwanted reverberation from the bottom or from the sea surface. It may however also remove scattered fish from the presentation. Noise Filter The Noise Filter function removes unwanted acoustic noise from the SN90 presentation. It will reduce the interference from other acoustic systems (sonars and echo sounders), and reduce the noise from propellers and similar noise sources. Horizontal Scroll The Horizontal Scroll function controls how fast the echo presentation shall move across in the Inspection view /B 41

Simrad SN90 Quick start guide Information Pane Options The SN90 offers several information panes to provide additional and detailed data from the SN90 presentation. The information panes are opened and closed using the buttons on the top bar. Several of the information panes are fitted with a Setup button. Select Setup to open the Information Pane Options dialog box. The Information Pane Options dialog box allows you to change the operational parameters used to present the data in the information panes. The Information Pane Options is only available in Inspection views. Objects menu; Functions and dialog boxes The Objects menu is - in spite of its name and location - not a menu at all. This "menu" opens a small view to monitor key operational parameters. How to open Click once on the icon under the Main menu to open the Objects menu. Click one more time on the icon to close the menu /B
