3 Abstract Attached is the IEEE Carleton University Student Branch s request to receive funding from CUESEF for the purchase of equipment. Below you will find a detailed list of the items we are requesting and the associated costs. As the IEEE student branch office provides a variety of services to Carleton engineering students, the purchase will allow the IEEE Carleton University branch office to remain up-to-date. Maintenance and upkeep will be performed by the student branch volunteers and executives. Page 3 of 9 16 October 2013

4 Group Introduction The IEEE Carleton University student branch is a student organization that focuses on professional networking and resources. As part of the larger parent group, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the student branch aims to provide academic and professional resources for undergraduate and graduate engineering students in the electronics, electrical, and computer engineering fields. With fifteen executive members and over twenty volunteers, the IEEE Carleton University student branch is responsible for a variety of outreach activities and a unique set of networking and educational resources aimed at the Carleton engineering student population. Personal Contact Hasith Vidanamadura Treasurer, treasurer@ieee.carleton.ca Student #: Faculty Contact Calvin Plett, DOE History of the Project The IEEE office has traditionally provided a workspace for students to study, along with reference material and an array of computer workstations to use. The office computers were traditionally used by students unable to find lab space. Since the last major refresh of the computer workstations was over four years ago, the equipment has become outdated, and does not keep up with the needs of current students. A rolling refresh of the computer workstations had been planned, but a series of equipment failures has necessitated the immediate replacement of three workstations completely. Funding The Request This proposal requests funding for (3) new computer monitors, and two (2) new desktop computers. Computer Monitors The computer monitors are replacing the current set of non-functional monitors in the student branch office, increasing the number of available workstations for the general engineering student population. 5 simultaneously was selected, with the ASUS VS228H providing the best value and reliability. A quote from Canada Computers was obtained. Desktop Computers In the interest of saving desk space in the office, the desktop computers will be smaller units which fit under the monitors. Based on the majority of use cases for these machines, and given that the expected lifetime of these computers will be approximately five years, the suggested purchase is a mini-desktop computer with at least 4 gigabytes of RAM, a 120 gigabyte hard drive, Ethernet connectivity, and a modern Intel processor. Based on these criteria, the Intel Nano 2000 computer was selected, with a quote from Canada Computers. 6 Conclusion The IEEE Carleton University student branch is submitting a proposal for funding for computer workstations. It will cost $2025 and we are asking CUESEF for $1625. We will be storing it in the IEEE student branch office (ME4238) and the volunteers and the technical director for the IEEE office will be responsible for maintenance. Page 6 of 9 16 October 2013
