4 Preface The package ITSM (Interactive Time Series Modelling) evolved from the programs for the IBM PC written to accompany our book, Time Series: Theory and Methods, published by Springer-Verlag. It owes its existence to the many suggestions for improvements received from users of the earlier programs. The requirements for running the programs are as follows: IBM PC, PC/XT, PCI AT or compatible computer operating under MS-DOS; at least 540 K of RAM available for applications; a CGA, EGA, VGA or Hercules card for graphics; a mathematics co-processor (recommended but not essential). The package includes the screen editor WORD6 and six programs, PEST, SMOOTH, SPEC, TRANS, ARVEC and ARAR, whose functions are summarized in Chapter l. Two of the programs, ARVEC (for multivariate autoregressive modelling) and ARAR (for univariate forecasting), have been added to the programs contained in earlier versions of the package. The other programs have been corrected and improved in many respects and the use of graphics has been considerably expanded. The programs PEST, SPEC and SMOOTH can be used to analyze time series of up to 2300 observations; ARVEC, ARAR and TRANS can handle series of lengths up to 1000, 1000 and 800 respectively. We are greatly indebted to many people associated with the development of the programs and manual. Outstanding contributions were made by Joe Mandarino, the architect ofthe original version of PEST, RobHyndman, who wrote the original version of the manual for PEST, and Anthony Brockwell, who provided WORD6, the graphics subroutines and general computing expertise. The first version of the PEST manual was prepared for use in a short course given by the Key Centre in Statistical Sciences at RMIT and The University of Melbourne. We are indebted to the Key Centre for support and for permission to make use of that material. We also wish to thank the National Science Foundation for support of the research on which many of the algorithms are based, R. Schnabel of the U niversity of Colorado computer science department for permission to use his optimization program, and Carolyn Cook for her assistance in the final preparation
5 vi Preface of the manual. We are gratend for the encouragement provided by Duane Boes and the excellent working environments of Colorado State University and the University of Melbourne. The editors of Springer-Verlag have been a constant source of support and encouragement and our families, as always, have played a key role in maintaining our sanity. Fort Collins, Colorado August, 1990 PETER J. BROCKWELL RICHARD A. DAVIS
