Tomorrow s communication today next generation of cabin communication? Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
3G or LTE Value Proposition: Access to IFE Data Aircraft Cabin 3G / LTE Cabin Router 3G/LTE data? IFE/ Cabin IP Both 3G and LTE offer high data rate in the access, but data rate can not be fully exploited 3G/LTE would add value to GSM if access to local IFE would be possible Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
With LTE, access to cabin content is possible Aircraft Cabin LTE Cabin Router LTE data IFE/ Cabin IP Billing Information Local data breakout is standard Billing information is sent to aviation operator and home operator Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
LTE On-Board Advantages vs. 3G/UMTS Local access to content is possible Wireless distribution of high throughput IFE services Support of next-generation mobile phones We believe LTE is the future on-board cabin technology to support complementary and integrated services Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Challenges for Satellite Systems: Capacity Dimensioning Extremely unbalanced traffic demand, both over geographic region and time! Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Simulation from 0h to 24h (GMT) Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Example Numerical Result: Relative Peak Spot Beam Capacities uplink EMEA satellite downlink Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
What does it mean? The nominal aggregate peak satellite capacity (respectively frequency band; L, Ku, Ka) is not everything Any flexibility and dynamic capabilities in allocation of capacities to spot beams are valuable Generally, a multi-market-segment offering helps the overall business case of the satellite operator/provider Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Tomorrow s communication today and dthe cockpit? Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Back in December 2003 PUSH A BIT Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
2007- ongoing: SESAR and Iris Programmes SESAR = Single European Sky ATM Research SESAR JU = Joint Undertaking of EC, Eurocontrol, and major stakeholders from ATM operations and industry The main objective of the SESAR Joint Undertaking is to develop a modernised ATM system for Europe, and to that end the future communication infrastructure is key ESA Iris programme addresses the satellite component for the future ATM datalink communication Key (interim) outcomes: Satellite is key component in future multilink concept Satellite L-band options for message-type data services with highest availability and shortest latency IP(v6) based architectures for datalink Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Recent SESAR Study on Future AOC Services by User Group consisting of Major/Regional/Low Fare Airline and Business Aviation Representatives Quoting some conclusions & recommendations (extracts): Remove the segregation g between ATS, AOC, AAC and APC traffic. Segregation should take place at the aircraft router instead of the communication channel. See and develop the new DataLinks strict as pipeline to the aircraft, independent of the content. Result is the cheapest implementation for the entire aircraft industry (one system that does it all). Cost Price (Operating cost, Communication costs) is the major factor. New DataLinks have to compete against COTS services (WIFI/WIMAX, 3G, 4G and new developments) in Lower communication costs results in higher h bandwidth usage (AOC Services are implemented based on cost/benefit analysis). Global cheap ( near -free) broadband communication will eventually be standard If not via the new DataLinks, it will be via another DataLink Bandwidth requirements for a single aircraft in 2020 will be significant number higher than today (ATS and AOC Combined). Today s legacy ACARS system is based on character messages, while in 2020 message exchange are following IT standard (XML, web). Industry will move from messages to messages and files. Standarization of EFB/Aircraft ICT infrastructure within airline will push for bandwidth requirements. Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
Integrated Cabin/Cockpit Communications There are several drivers Integrated modular avionics (IMA) Cost reduction Unified protocols and increased performance/efficiency There are various studies and industry activities There are long-term operational and commercial synergies Joint Ka/ICSSC Conference 2013 Florence, October
