3 1. Launching the Demo Note: To run the demo you will need Internet Explorer 10 or higher, Chrome or Firefox. Go to You will see the page below. Click on the Sign In button to login into the demo. 3

4 2. Signing In One you have clicked on the Sign In button you will be presented will the following dialog. Simply enter your address and complete the Captcha field to login into the demo. 4

Three versions of the Vortex demo are available, these are: 1. A Java version of the demo that can run from any PC that has Java installed on it 2. A version of the demo that can run in a HTML 5 browser 3. A version of the demo for Android devices 4.1 Running the Demo as a Java Application The first thing you must do is download either the Windows (.zip) or Unix (.tar.gz) demo package and uncompress the package to your local file system using the appropriate utility(s). Note: To run the vortex-ishapes demo you need to have a JDK or JRE - ideally v1.7 or higher installed on your PC. 6

7 If you don't have a JDK / JRE installed, you can download it from Running the demo is very simple, on windows issues the following command: c:\some\path\vortex-shapes:> ishapes.bat somebody@company.com Or on Unix derivatives (Linux, MacOS, Solaris, etc.): $./ishapes somebody@company.com This command will start the ishapes application using your (e.g. somebody@company.com) as the partition used to produce and consume data. If you also want to interact with the web demo ( make sure that you use the same address for both demo applications. You can start multiple instances of the demo, publish and subscribe to different shapes across applications running on a PC, from a web browser as well as on an Android device. 4.2 Running the Demo as a Web Application To run the Vortex Web application demo simply click on the Start button in the Web App box. 4.3 Running the Demo as an Android Application To install and run the Vortex Android application demo simply click on the Google Play button in the Android App box while accessing the demo from your Android device. 7

8 5. Vortex Web Application Now that you have landed on the demo page you can start playing with it. The first thing to do is to connect by clicking on the Connect button. Once connected the page will update and the Pub and Sub buttons will become active. As the demo illustrates the Publish/Subscribe communication model then open another browser window and direct it to ( Assuming you are using the same browser, you should already be logged in. Then go to the Demo page. NOTE: When running the demo ensure that you don t use browser tabs, make sure that you run the demo using two separate browser windows. At this point you can publish information from one browser and subscribe from another. Let s see how this can be done. 8

9 Publish a Circle Click on the Pub button, a dialog will open (see image below), select your favorite color and click OK. At this point you will see a circle bouncing on the browser canvas. In general, shapes with a white center represent information produced by your application. While shapes with a black center represent information being received. 9

10 Subscribe to Circles Click on the Sub button, select your favorite color on the dialog and then click OK. 10

The circle in the subscriber s window will track the circle moving in the publishers window as shown below. You can add more circles or other shapes from each browser window.
