Sideloading Support By Device

1 We use the term Sideloading to describe the process of loading an app from a source other than the app store typically used by the platform s store, such as the App Store for ios or the Google Play Store. This document provides support for sideloading apps using the ClassView platform. Apps include teacher and student apps for ilit, myperspective ELD Companion, and Words Their Way. A summary of the sideloading process steps for IOS, Chrome, Android and Windows are included. 2 Sideloading on ios In the following example, we will demonstrate the download of the ilit teacher app onto an ipad. The same process applies to both myperspectives ELD Companion and Words Their Way. Tap on the Safari icon and go to pearsonappstore.com Select the app you wish to load: ilit, myperspective ELD Companion, or Words Their Way For this example, we ve chosen ilit, but the process is the same for any of our apps. Tap the Teacher button under the Apple ipad icon to sideload the teacher app. Page 2

3 Tap Install when you receive the popup message. Depending your network speed, thee app should take about 15 to 20 seconds to download. Page 3

4 Tap Trust on the popup. Depending on settings on your device, you may have to go into Settings and trust apps from Pearson Once trusted, the app will be ready to use. Tap on the app icon and then begin the login process. Repeat the process for the student app or any of the other apps on PearsonAppStore.com Page 4

5 Sideloading on Chromebook In the following example, we will demonstrate the download of the ilit teacher app onto a Chromebook. The same process applies to both myperspectives ELD Companion and Words Their Way. Open the Chrome browser on your Chromebook Go to PearsonAppStore.com Select the app you wish to load: ilit, myperspective ELD Companion, or Words Their Way For this example, we ve chosen ilit, but the process is the same for any of our apps. Select the Teacher or Student under the ChromeBook icon. Page 5

6 A message will pop up indicating that the app is being downloaded Once the download is complete, a.crx file for the app will be placed in the folder under Downloads (blue folder in bottom tray) Select the triple dots in the upper right of the browser, select More Tools and then select Extensions. Page 6

7 An Extension tab will open as a browser tab. It will look similar to the image below. After the Extensions page loads, select the blue Folder icon in the bottom tray. Select the TeachiLit.crx file in the blue Folder and then drag and drop it to the Extensions page. After dragging and dropping the file, a popup will appear verifying that you wish to add the app Select Add App Page 7

8 Once the app is loaded then it will be available for use. Tap the small white circle on the far left of the bottom tray to show the list of apps. For convenience, double tap (two finger simultaneously) on the ilit icon and select Pin to Shelf The ilit icon will now be available in the bottom tray for easy access Page 8

9 Sideloading on Android In the following example, we will demonstrate the download of the ilit teacher app onto a Chromebook. The same process applies to both myperspectives ELD Companion and Words Their Way. Note: These instructions include steps that may not apply to your specific device and version of Android. Go to Settings Tap Security Scroll down to Unknown source s and check the box to the right. If available, uncheck the box Allow one installation. If you are unable to deselect this box, future app updates may be blocked. Page 9

10 Tap Ok to confirm the action. Open the web browser Go to PearsonAppStore.com Select the app you wish to load: ilit, myperspective ELD Companion, or Words Their Way For this example, we ve chosen ilit, but the process is the same for any of our apps. Page 10

11 Once the download is finished Open your file manager app Browse to downloads, and locate the app you would like to install. Page 11

12 Tap on the ilit, myeld, or WTW.apk file to install the app Click on Install to finish installing the app Once the app is loaded then it will be available for use. Sideloading on Windows Requirements: Sideloading on Windows requires a Windows developer account, whether you re using apps from PearsonAppStore.com or the MDM.PHP. Use the following link to register: You will need your Microsoft account credentials. Uninstall any prior versions of the Windows ilit, Words Their Way (WTW), or myperspectives ELD Companion apps before continuing. Step 1: Downloading App(s) Open the Internet browser on the Surface tablet. Page 12

13 Go to PearsonAppStore.com. For this example, we ve chosen ilit, but the process is the same for any of our apps. Tap the APPS button. Select the Teacher or Student under the Windows icon. Tap to download the apps. Step 2: Unzip the files Using File Explorer, open Downloads or the folder you selected during Step 1. Locate the zipped files: learnilit#.#.#.zip, and/or teachilit#.#.#.zip. Right click, or long tap the filename and select Extract All. Accept the default destination and Extract. The files will be extracted automatically. The extracted folder window will open by default. Open (double tap) the app folder. Locate and right click or long tap the file Add-AppDevPackage From the menu, tap Run with PowerShell. The Security Warning window will appear. Tap Open to continue. Step 3: Windows Developer Account already installed If your Windows Developer license is still current and available, then the Windows PowerShell window will open. You will see Found bundle, Installing app, and Success: Your app was successfully installed. Press Enter to continue. Close all windows, search for ilit, and open the app(s). Step 4: First time use of Windows Developer Account If this is a first-time installation, the Execution Policy Change window will appear: o Select the [Y] Yes option, which is the default. Tap the keyboard icon located on the lower start menu bar to open the keyboard, then tap Enter. o Messages will indicate that a developer license and certificate are required, press Enter to continue. o User Account Control will pop up. Tap the Yes button. o Security Warning window will appear, select the [R] Run Once option by typing R, then Enter o Acquiring developer license - Developer License window will appear. Tap the X on the keyboard to close it so you can see the I Agree button. o Tap I Agree and the Sign In window will appear. o Enter the developer account credentials from above. Note: this is only required the first time each app is installed. o Tap the Sign in button. A window will appear confirming You now have a developer license... Tap the Close button. o Confirm by typing Y, then press Enter to install the digital certificate o Look for: Success: Your app was successfully installed, and press Enter to continue. o Close all windows. Search for ilit, Words Their Way (WTW) or myperspectives ELD Companion (myeld) and open the app(s). o The apps are now installed and ready for use. Page 13
