1 Helvetica Type Specimen Process book

2 Project Goal Using the history and typeface of Helvetica to inspire my design, the goal of this project was to create a booklet that would essentially sell the type as the most beautiful possible typeface on the market. Each page showcases the name of the typeface, the typographer that designed it, type classification, the full alphabet in upper and lowercase, historic facts, samples of body and healing sized type and sample of the typeface available styles.

3 Research & Inspiration

4 Research & Inspiration During the research process, I looked for designs that integrated the use of design uniquely, either with imagery, or using the typefaces to create a dynamic visual. The designs that are more eye capturing have a limited color palette. I avoided searching for inspiration from other designs using the typeface Helvetica in a specimen book.

5 Color Swatches

6 Pantone black 6 c (81%, 71%, 59%, 75%) Tint from Color (9%, 7%, 7%, 0%) Color Swatches After researching ideas, I began formulating the type of theme I would want the specimen book to portray when someone picks it up and looks through it. The color palette would maintain a pantone color, a tint of that color, and either the use of black or white in addition. I want to avoid creating a design that would be overwhelming to view, but also something appealing and remarkable Pantone 711c (11%, 98%, 92%, 2%) Tint from Color (0%, 19%, 13%, 0%) Pantone 604 c (9%, 7%, 96%, 0%) Tint from Color (0%, 1%, 15%, 0%) Pantone 7637 c (30%, 93%, 62%, 21%) Tint from Color (6%, 20%, 11%, 0%)

7 Sketches

8 Sketches After through research, of different uses of typography, I was able to flesh out a few sketches of potential ideas. The final draft may feature features from each sketch, or not. The idea behind sketching, is to begin setting up the game plan before attempting to execute the core design ideas.

9 Compositions

10 Comp 1 The goal behind this composition, was to create dynamic and appealing look that would attract the viewer to read the important historical information Critique Do not need to have the alphabet for every different helvetica type style. Add more information, leading/size.

11 Comp 2 The Inspiration behind this composition, was to create a way to uniquely use type with the layout. Critique Both of the paragraphs are not lining up evenly with the letter H. It appears unbalanced. There are to many floating elements, and there is a lack of grid structure. Do not use centered type for the Alphabet

12 Comp 3 The goal behind this composition, was to utilize the typography and color, to create an interesting way to present the title. Critique Nice use of white space. Type is very small, print it out to see the legibility.

13 Working towards final Composition After going through the initial comps, I began creating the final version. I abandoned any types of bright colors and decided to stick with the simple black or white. These core pages needed some tweaking to them. Lower the size of the text and increase the size of the word history. It is very heavy on the top right size of the page. It is appears unbalanced. Switch up the layout. Add the size and leading of the text for each paragraph Make the lines a tad bit smaller.

15 Final After revising many of the older comps, I found that many of my original iterations were still of influence in the final version. I focused on a more consistent design throughout, and made sure the information was readable. The mock ups below are of the front page and the historical facts of helvetica

16 Final These pages go into detail of how helvetica looks within the alphabet, the different styles and how it looks in its contents and within different sizes.

17 Final These pages close out the entire specimen booklet where it goes over the anatomy of the type like the x-height, cap-line, crossbar etc.
