1 Rainova Regional Innovation Observatory user guide The Rainova Regional Innovation Observatory is part of the Rainova project website: Although the main website is completely open, access to the Observatory is restricted to registered members. 2 Registering and logging in Click anywhere on the Regional Innovation Observatories pane to access the Observatory: On the login page there are several familiar options, which should need no further explanation: 2

3 New users must first register using the Create an account option. You will need to provide the following information: An address A user name, which must be in the following format: your full name as one word all in lowercase, followed by -member for example, johnsmith-member or angelinacastrogiovannimember Your choice of password You will automatically be sent an confirming your user name and password and will then be able to access the Observatory. 3

4 Navigating the Observatory After logging in you will be directed to a main navigation page. From there you can choose to visit any one of the 11 regional observatories that collectively make up the Rainova Regional Innovation Observatory. In the example below, Sønderjylland [Southern Denmark] has been chosen: You will be taken to your chosen regional observatory where you can select the category of content you wish to view: 4

5 Although the regional observatories colours vary widely, they all share the same structure and overall design as shown above. Before discussing how to access and view content we must first look at how the eight topics shown above are organised: Five of the pages European News, Case Studies, Innovation Systems, Organisations and Events are single-topic pages. Choose any one of them to directly access a list of articles. For example, when you choose Organisations in the Sønderjylland observatory you are taken directly to the following page: Two of the pages Regional News and Support are multiple-topic pages. When you click on either you are taken to a sub-page displaying a new set of options, as shown below: The final page, Networking, links directly to the Rainova VCP online community platform at The VCP platform, which is a separate entity, falls outside the scope of this observatory user guide. 5

6 We should also mention that the European News topic is shared between all the regional observatories. In other words, the content is common to them all: If you want to switch to a different regional observatory you have two options. One is to log out of the observatory you are currently in. You will then be returned to the top-level page displaying all the available observatories, from where you can choose the new observatory you want. The other option is to use the Search facility, as explained at the end of this user guide. 6

7 How content is organised in the Observatory Each topic is presented as a list of articles, with a hyperlinked title followed either by a short summary of the full article or the first part of the full article itself. Click on an article title to see the full article: 7

8 Frequently a full article will include one or more hyperlinks to external web pages, or sometimes online PDFs or other resources: 8

9 Using Search The Rainova Observatory has a powerful Search facility. Simply type in a search term to display a list of results: Long lists of results are not completely displayed. Scroll to the bottom and click on View all results for the complete set, which may run to several pages. The Search facility includes an option to search the web from within the Observatory by simply switching the radio button to Web. Any web pages external to the Observatory will open in a new window. By default the radio button is switched to Local for searching inside the Observatory. 9

10 Search can also conveniently be used to change to another regional observatory without the need to log out and back in. Simply type in the name of the region you want: If you want to access any of the standard Rainova website pages such as the Homepage, Dissemination, Gallery etc. while you are logged in as a member it is best to log out of the Observatory first. In fact you can access the main website while you are logged in, but if you then choose to go back to the Observatory the system will require you to log out and back in again.
