No profit is made from this and should not be made from this tutorial. The networking feature discussed in this tutorial is valid for OpenCanvas 1.1 only. The recent versions of OpenCanvas ( OpenCanvas 4 being the most recent as of this date) do not have the networking feature. The version I used in the screen shots is OpenCanvas 1.1 b72. This should work for all builds of OpenCanvas 1.1 regardless. This tutorial assumes that you have a basic understanding on how to use a computer in a GUI environment. Starting out : First off, OpenCanvas 1.1 runs directly from that single.exe file. When you run the program, it should look something like this:

So highlight and click on the last word in the tool bar menu. A drop down menu should appear to allow you to select what language you want to run the program with. In this case, select English. There, the program is now running in English and we can move on. When it comes to networking in OpenCanvas, you either want to join in on an already set up session or you wish to host your own session. This tutorial will start describing on how to join an already running session first. 2

3 How to Join an already established Networking Session : First off, you must find someone who is hosting an OpenCanvas networking session and ask for their IP address and possible password for that session. Once you have that information, follow these steps: First, go to the tool bar, highlight and click on Networking. Scroll down, highlight and click on Show NetworkWindow. These windows should now pop up near the centre of the screen. We will ignore the chat window for now. Most likely you are going to use an IM client of your own. Click on the Client tab in the NetworkWindow. 3

Password : Here is where you input the password (if given by the Host) needed to join the session.

4 This is what you should be seeing. Connect IP : Here is where you input the Host's IP. UserName : Here is where you input the user name that you wish to use for the session. Password : Here is where you input the password (if given by the Host) needed to join the session. When you are done inputting the required information, click this button (yes I know, for some reason it didn't translate) to connect. Now you may encounter this window if you are behind a firewall. If you see this window or something similar, click on Unblock to proceed. 4

5 There! Now you are connected! The chat window may be used if the participants in the session are not using similar IM clients already. If you choose to use the chat feature installed, it is basically like any other chat client. The names of the users are on the right side and the messages appear on the left. The Host is marked with symbol. You type the messages in the space designated and hit Enter. You can now start collaborating on your artistic works! 5

6 When you are finished or exit the program, the window below will pop up allowing you to save your work. How to Host an OpenCanvas Networking Session : First, go to the tool bar, highlight and click on Networking. Scroll down, highlight and click on Show NetworkWindow. 6

Click on the Network Preference tab in the NetworkWindow. You should see something similar to this. Width : How wide in pixels the image is going to be. The maximum is Height : How tall in pixels the image is going to be. The maximum is LayerNum : The amount of layers the image will have. The maximum is 4. Port : The port number that will be opened up to allow others to connect to you. The port number varies. MaxMember : How many people are to be allowed in a networking session. The maximum is 4. Set the numbers to what you wish them to be and then click on the Server tab. 7

8 You should see something like this. UserName : Input the user name you wish to use for the session here. Password : Input the password you wish to use for the session here. It is easier to just leave it blank. When you are done doing that, click the something similar to what is below. button. You should then see You are now hosting an OpenCanvas session! 8
