4 Overview of Mobile Access Options With the release of SuccessMaker 8 (SM8), new options for accessing SM courseware on mobile devices are now available. To access SM courseware on a Google Chromebook, simply sign in with your Google account, open the Chrome browser, and type your school s URL into the browser address bar. The Chromebook requires no special setup and can easily access both Math and Reading courseware. NOTE: Pearson does not recommend or support the use Guest mode browsing on Google Chromebooks when accessing SuccessMaker. Safari Browser on the ipad Available for SM Reading courseware only Safari Browser on the ipad One of the benefits of accessing SuccessMaker Reading directly from the Safari browser on the ipad is that it does not require any special setup. This solution is currently only available for the Reading courseware. Getting Started Assessing Compatibility Pearson wants your student s SuccessMaker experience to be positive and productive. If necessary, work with your Pearson representative to determine if your school s technical configuration is compatible.

5 1. Determine if your school s configuration is generally compatible with using the Safari browser on the ipad to directly access SuccessMaker Reading. System Requirements Hardware, Software, and Technologies Minimum Requirements SuccessMaker Version: Hardware: SM8 Locally Deployed ipad 3+ with 9.7-inch screen Operating System: ios 8 Wireless Spectrum: Internet bandwidth: Browsers: Wireless-N 5 GHz 1.5 Mbps each ipad For example, if you expect 20 students to access SuccessMaker reading on the ipad at the same time, then your available bandwidth must be at least 30 Mbps. Safari 2. Confirm your school s available bandwidth by contacting your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or perform your own testing to determine your available bandwidth. 3. If your school meets the minimum system requirements, on a supported ipad, open the Safari browser. 4. In the browser s address box, type your schools unique URL. The standard SuccessMaker start page appears. Preparing Students to Access Reading from the Safari Browser on the ipad In general, students running the SuccessMaker reading course through the Safari browser on an ipad can use standard gestures common to most mobile devices with touchscreen capabilities. The list below provides some explanation and tips about using the reading courseware tools and navigation on the ipad. Enable Audio and Video Prompt When a student begins a reading course, a Enable audio and video message appears. The student must tap the message button to begin the course. Portrait mode If a student attempts to run the courseware with the ipad in portrait mode, some text and images may not display properly. Students should use landscape mode only. Rollover Audio In reading passages, the student can select and hold text to play the rollover audio. The text color changes to orange and a narrator reads the selected text.

Volume Control for Videos The volume control in the sidebar, shown below, is unavailable for videos when running a reading course directly from an ipad.

Cognitive Coach Prompts To close the coach prompt before moving forward, tap the small x in the upper-right corner of the note when the coach audio is complete.

Use the volume control on the ipad device to increase or decrease the volume when the sidebar volume control is unavailable. Frequently Asked Questions Q: What happens if the student attempts to launch the math course? A: SuccessMaker Math is not supported in Safari. The following message will display if the student attempts to launch a math course: Player Initialization Failed. Please close the browser and relaunch SuccessMaker. Q: As a teacher or administrator, can I use the ipad to work in the teacher and administrator dashboards? A: Yes. You can access SuccessMaker using a Safari browser on an ipad by typing the SM host address of the school s web server and signing in with a teacher or administrator Username and Password. Q: Where are Fluency recordings saved on the ipad? A: Fluency recordings cannot be retained by SM on the ipad so the Fluency setting should be turned Off for courses/assignments to be executed using an ipad. Q: My student accidently tapped one of the links on the Sign In page. How does he get back to SuccessMaker?
