1 GENESEE INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL DISTRICT Technology & Media Services/GenNET 2413 West Maple Avenue Flint, Michigan (810) Target Audience(s): Elementary Teachers, Secondary Teachers Synergy: Class Websites In this tip sheet, users will learn how to create and edit class websites in the Grade Book. *Please note that class websites must be added to the Grade Book Menu in order for teachers to have access to class websites. Also, prior configuration must be set up for class websites to be viewed in ParentVUE/StudentVUE. STEP ONE: OPEN CLASS WEBSITES Go to Grade Book> Class Websites. A new page will appear. Note: The class website posts will match what your class filter is set to. For example, if your filter is set to the Home Room, when you open class websites and make posts, it will be connected to your Home Room. Likewise, if you are set to a math class, when you open class websites and make posts, it will be connected to your math class (this is how it will be viewed in ParentVUE/StudentVUE.) There is currently no ability to copy posts/documents in class websites from one section to another. STEP TWO: TOPICS Topics available in class websites will be listed on the left side of the screen. Default topics (which cannot be removed by the teacher) include Announcements, Homework, and Classroom Documents Genesee Intermediate School District 1 Page C:\Users\beasterl\Desktop\TipsheetsDOC\Grade Book\C_Class Websites.docx Revised 8/15/2013
2 To add a new topic, select New. A row will appear. Enter the Topic Name and select Insert to save. Select Cancel to cancel the topic creation. To delete or edit a topic, hover beside the topic name. Two icons will appear beside the topic name. To edit a topic name, select the icon. To delete a topic name, select the icon. The button will appear beside the topic name. Select Save to remove the topic name. Select Cancel to cancel the deletion. STEP THREE: POSTING A MESSAGE Select the topic you wish to post a message in. On the topic page, select New to add a message. There are three main components to posting a new message: the Headline (title of the message), the Content (body of the message), and Visibility (will the message be posted or not to ParentVUE/ Student VUE) Genesee Intermediate School District 2 Page
3 Enter the Headline. Enter the Content. There are a variety of options to modify the content, such as adding links, pictures, source code, and styles. An example of this includes highlighting the text and selecting the links icon to add a link to the text. Select whether you want the post Visible or Hidden by clicking on the Is Visible button and making the selection of your choice. Posted means as soon as the message is saved, it will be visible in ParentVUE/StudentVUE. Hidden means as soon as the message is saved, the message will only be viewable on the teacher s class websites area in the Grade Book. It will not be viewable in ParentVUE/StudentVUE unless Is Visible is changed to Posted Genesee Intermediate School District 3 Page
4 To save a message (and post, depending on visibility), select Insert. The message will be saved (and/or posted). Note: Current functionality does not allow the user to add a Display Start Date and/or Display End Date for posting messages. To remove a post, you must delete it. To edit or remove a post, hover over the post and select the Edit or Delete icons. SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT ADDING DOCUMENTS TO MESSAGES: If wanting to add a document to a message (such as a class syllabus or newsletter), you must create the post/message first. The Upload Document functionality is not available when first creating a post. To add an attachment, hover over the post and select the Edit icon Genesee Intermediate School District 4 Page
5 On the message s page, scroll towards the bottom and select Upload New Document. A pop up box will appear. Select Choose Document to find the document you wish to upload. Select Cancel to cancel the document finding. Select the document you wish to load. Once the document is selected, select Upload to attach it to the post. Once uploaded, the document will automatically be saved to the post. To upload another document to the post, repeat the above steps Genesee Intermediate School District 5 Page
6 STEP FOUR: VIEWING WEBSITE POSTS IN STUDENTVUE To view what the post looks like in StudentVUE, return to the seating chart. Select a student s picture and select StudentVUE from the drop down menu. StudentVUE will open. Select Class Websites from the left side panel. You can select which class/section to view from the drop down menu towards the top. A special note about homework: In Class Websites, if an assignment is designated (in Assignment Type) as Homework and does not have a grade on that assignment, the student will automatically be able to see the homework title and information when clicking the Homework topic.
