Research Library Button Setup Help Button Setup, located under the Setup Tab, contains the design form for programming the user-defined Web Buttons that are placed strategically throughout the Research Library: The first example will explain the setup of MainTop Web Button #3 located on the top left of the Main Form, and captioned "Mas-Step" (highlighted below): 1

Book Identification Notice that Mas-Step (MainTop #3) contains two entries in the Button Setup Form: one for books 1-39, and one for books The first is for the Masoretic Hebrew Old Testament, and the second is for the Stephanus 1550 Greek New Testament. Both utilize the "Book1" column from the Button Books Form (see the BK column of the previous image). The button is linked to the Bible website, "StudyBible.Info", which contains a wealth of information for Greek and Hebrew students and researchers. The URLs for this Greek-Hebrew website are: Compare those URLs with the setup required for context-sensitive access to those sites: The first setup for button #3 provides access to any verse of any chapter of the Hebrew Old Testament (HOT) for books 1 to 39, or Genesis to Malachi. The second setup provides similar access for the Stephanus 1550 Greek for books 40 to 66, or from Matthew to Revelation. Book ID Numbers The system currently contains more than 90 books. The first 66 books are the Holy Bible, and the remaining books are the Apocrypha and some early Jewish and Christian writings. Book Lookup Table Book ID numbers in the Book Lookup Table accessed by clicking the Book Button on top left of the Main Form, located immediately to the right of the Active Book/Chapter boxes. The Book Lookup Table also contains an abbreviation for use in the Main Search Engine, as well as the number of chapters in each book: 2

Variables The key to Web Button setup is the use of asterisks (*) to "enclose" identifying variables which for the first example above are: BK: CH: VS: the book as identified in the "BK" column. the chapter number. the verse number. The system replaces variables inside the asterisks with the Active book, chapter and verse. Other variables, which will be explained later, are: 3

BK2: BKID: SN: CONC: the book name as identified in the "BK2" column. the book ID number. the Strong's Concordance number. the Concordance Search Box text Pattern The Pattern Box located at the bottom of the Button Setup Form is used as a guide to temporarily "hold" a pattern. This example pattern is one of the actual URLs that was modified for the MainTop #3 Button: The URL would be altered exactly as follows: Replace "Matthew" with *BK* Replace the first "1" (after %20) with *CH* Replace the second "1" (after the colon) with *VS* This is the completed setup for verse-sensitive access to the Greek New Testament: The Old Testament is set up similarly, with the exception that "Stephanus" is replaced with the Hebrew Old Testament acronym "HOT". When the Mas-Step button is pressed, and the Active Verse is from the 66 books of the Bible, the StudyBible.Info website will open to that verse. For example, if the Active Verse is Galatians 3:16, the following information will display: 4

The Stephanus and Masoretic texts are also available within the Research Library under the Strongs Tab; however language websites are readily accessible through the use of Web Buttons. The Button Book column for the example Web Button is Book1, excerpted on the right. It contains the book "naming convention" used by this particular web site. There are twenty available columns in the Button Books table, in addition to the BookID column. Many of the more commonly used naming conventions found on Bible-based websites are provided. See Button Books Help under the Setup Tab for more information. Formatted URLs Some URLs contain formatted books, chapters, and/or verses to establish common lengths. For example, scroll or page down and examine the StrongsTrans (Strongs Translation) Button #10 titled "ParallelH". Click the Record Selector of the first of the two records to make it the active record, then click the Hide Books Button at the bottom right of the form to provide better visual access to the URL: Note the use of zeroes (0's) enclosed in number signs (#) located to the left of two of the variables, both of which are enclosed in asterisks (*). Also note the variable "BKID" is used instead of "BK". This is the original website URL for Genesis 1:1 of the Hebrew Old Testament: The book is identified by "B" plus a 2-digit book number with leading zeroes for book numbers less than 10. The chapter is identified by a "C" plus a 3-digit chapter number with leading zeroes for books less than 100. The verse is identified as a "V" followed by a number, with no leading zeroes. For example, this would be the URL for Psalm 119:12 (the book number for the Psalms is 19): 5

The format for the book is as follows: B19 = B*#00#BKID*, which translates to: 1) B (not a part of the format). 2) an asterisk (*), followed by the format code, which is "#00#" for two digits. 3) the variable, which in this case is "BKID", followed by an asterisk (*). The keys to formatting are: 1) format codes are enclosed in number signs (#) 2) both format codes and variables are enclosed in asterisks (*) The format for the chapter is similar but uses three leading zeroes, or #000#. This is the completed setup for the Hebrew URL for this website, with codes highlighted and underlined: Click the View Books button. Note that the book columns 1 and 2 (BK, BK2) are zero since this particular website uses the BookID Number (BKID) in lieu of a text column in the Button Books table: Multiple Book Names Some web URLs contain two book names, or a book name and its abbreviation. For example, examine the second entry for Main Bottom Button #1 captioned "JFB" for Jamieson, Faussett & Brown (shown with visual and hidden book columns): In this example variables BK and BK2 are both used: the book column BK is "2" and book column BK2 is "7". The target website contains the book name twice: 6

From that URL it appears that both variables use the same book naming convention. They do in most instances, but the names for the Song of Solomon differ, as follows: This is the only book for this URL with a different name, yet two book columns are required because of that single variation. However, there is an alternate method: Borrowing a Book If another website contains the same abbreviation ("song") in its naming convention, the name can be "borrowed". Scroll down to KJV Button #1 for an example of the setup, which requires three steps: This is the setup for a John Gill commentary found on the same website as the Jamieson, Faussett & Brown commentary. The naming conventions are identical except for the name of the commentary (e.g. "gill" vs "jfb"). However, in this case the same Book2 is used for both book variables (BK and BK2,) except for the 2nd book of Bible book #22, which is the Song of Solomon. In this instance the 2nd book name ("song") was "borrowed" from Book6 which is used as the naming convention of other websites. Strong's Number Variable The Strong's Tab contains ten Web Buttons that can be programmed to access websites by the Strong's Number: 7

These Web Buttons can be programmed individually or in parallel. For the following URL's, replace the highlighted Strong's numbers with the SN variable enclosed in asterisks (*SN*). In this example, replace the StrN1 Button for the Strong's Dictionary Form: To program the two StrN1 Buttons in Parallel, duplicate them for both the StrongsDict and StrongsTrans buttons: Concordance Variable The Concordance Form contains nine Web Buttons that can be programmed to access Bible Web Sites to the Active Book, Chapter, and/or Verse. But these buttons can also pass the current Search Text to a URL variable for context-sensitive access to Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, and etc.. Below is the URL for a Concordance web site, followed by the programming for a Concordance Web Button using the Concordance Variable (*CONC*): Local Files Scroll back up to Main Bottom Button #1 and examine the first entry: 8

The first entry contains the local path of a PDF formatted book of the Jamieson, Fausset & Brown (JFB) commentary stored on the computer hard drive that will be accessed under one of two conditions: 1) 2) the Internet service is offline. the Default Button Path is set to File If the Default Button Path is set to Web, and the Internet website cannot be accessed for any reason, the system will default to a local file, provided it is included in the Button Setup list. First there will be a brief message like this: After a few seconds, the local file will open to page 17 of the book, which is the absolute page 43 of the PDF file, as specified in the BK2 column of button setup: 9

In the button setup for this file by JFB (shown on the previous page), the BK column is set to -1 to identify the entry as a file, and the BK2 column is assigned the starting page number, which is page 43 in this example. If the Default Button Path is set to "File", the system will attempt to open the local file first. As previously mentioned, the setting for the default Button Path can be accessed under the Apps/Defaults Tab under the Setup Tab. Splitting a Book One complication in working with commentaries or historical documents is the occasional large number of pages. This particular book by JFB is over 1,500 pages and the Table of Contents is unwieldy. There are button setup design features that will allow the book to be virtually "split" into manageable parts. The Jamieson, Fausset & Brown commentary can be virtually split into multiple parts by creating multiple but identical records; and then by modifying the First and Last book number columns, along with the starting page number in the BK2 column. For this example, begin by right-clicking one of the JFB Captions, and highlight the menu option Equals JFB. The screen should look like this: Click Equals JFB to filter the records. Only the JFB records should remain: Now Right-Click on the Record Selector in the left-most column to open this menu: 10

Click Copy to copy that record into memory; then place the cursor in the Record Selector column of the blank record at the bottom and Right-Click, again: Click Paste to create the duplicate record: Click the Refresh Button at the lower right of the form to update the Form and resort the records. The three JFB records should now look like this: The large commentary will be split into Old and New Testament "parts". The page number for Matthew 1:1 is the Absolute Page Number of 863 which is typed into the BK2 column for the second duplicate record. The first and last book numbers are then changed to reflect the Old and New Testament parts. The three (completed) records should look like this: 11

Hereafter, when this Web Button is pressed with a New Testament book as the Active Book, the JFB book will open to Matthew 1:1. This assumes one of these two conditions apply: 1) the Internet is offline, or 2) the Startup Default Button Path is set to "File". This virtual "splitting" can be performed any number of times to create smaller and smaller parts, reducing the work necessary to find a verse in a large book or commentary. To complete this section of help, click the Filtered button near the bottom of the form to restore the hidden records. Multiple Commentaries Multiple commentaries spanning the books of the bible can be added in a context sensitive manner. For example, there are seven entries for Adam Clarke commentaries in Main Bottom Button #2, captioned as "AClarke". The seventh entry is a URL of Adam Clarke's Commentary on the website: The first six entries for the Adam Clarke Web Button are separate books listed in the Publications Lookup Table, which can be accessed by clicking the Library Button at the bottom right of the Button Setup Form: 12

The six Adam Clarke books are listed as follows: Modifying a Button The Publications Lookup Table can assist in adding an existing publication to a web button. In this example, the Main Bottom Button #7, currently used to access the Expositor's Bible Commentary at will be modified to open an existing Library publication. First click the Library Button, located to the immediate right of the Pattern Box to access the Publications Lookup Table. Scroll or page-down or search (Ctrl-F) to find and select Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol 05, as shown below: Double-click in any column of the selected record to copy the path and filename into the Pattern Box: Highlight the filename (press Ctrl-A), right-click, and select Copy from the popup menu. Alternately, press Ctrl-C to copy the highlighted filename into memory. 13

Click the New Record Button to add a new record. The New Record button is located on the line above the Pattern Box to the left of the Unfiltered button. It is identified by a right-arrow with starburst icon. The form should only display a new record at the top: Click inside the "URL Pattern or File Path/Name Box, right-click and select Paste from the popup menu: Alternately, press "Ctrl-V" to paste the filename into the new record: Next click the down-arrow button in the Location Box and select Main Bottom from the Selection List. Click the down-arrow button in the Btn# Box and select the number 7. Click Refresh to re-sort the table, then page down a few times until the new record is found. Change the BK Box to -1 to identify this as a file, and temporarily change the BK2 box to the number 1 (the start page number.): Before proceeding, the web setup for the Expositor's Bible Commentary will be placed in "Storage" for later use. 14

Moving a Button to Storage Web Button setups can be freely moved in and out of Storage. In this example the setup for the Expositor's Bible Commentary will be moved to storage. First, click the down-arrow button in the Location Box and select Storage from the Selection List. Next, click the down-arrow button in the Btn# Box (Button # Box) and select the number 1: Click the Refresh Button to move the record into Storage. Scroll down to the storage records to see how this record is stored for later use: There are 20 button storage areas (1-20), and each area can store thousands of button designs. To retrieve a button design for use, simply change the Button Location and Button Number to match one of the available Web Buttons. If necessary, move the existing button design into Storage. Finding the Start Page Number To complete the design of the new Main Bottom Button #7, double-click inside the Pattern Box to Open the previously pasted file for reading: The file opens to the Book Cover. Page Down to find the Table of Contents: 15

The target research will be on the works of Hippolytus which begins on book page 9. Enter the number 9 in the page number box of the PDF reader to find the first page of the works of Hippolytus. the Absolute Page is 23. Both numbers--the Book Page and the Absolute Page--are highlighted in this example, along with the total pages. The Absolute Page is the number needed for the Web Button: Type 23 into the Main Bottom Button #7 page number column labeled BK2: 16

Modifying Button Caption and Control Tip Text To change the Caption and Control Tip Texts, click the Button Activate Tab on the Setup Menu and scroll down to select Main Bottom Button #7: Prior to changing the button Caption, the Control Tip Text will be placed in Storage. First, copy the record into memory (Ctrl-C), and paste the record into one of the storage locations at the bottom (Ctrl-V). Alternately, use the right-click Copy/Paste functions in the record selector column. Example below: This button information can now be easily recovered from Storage for future use by using similar Copy-Paste operations. Unlike the Web Button Setup Form which has unlimited storage for button designs, this form is limited to fifty storage areas for the Control Tip Text and should be used judiciously. Scroll up to the Main Bottom Button #7 and type the following into the highlighted fields: 1) Caption: Hippolyt 2) Control Tip Text: The Works of Hippolytus_Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol 05 Place the cursor immediately after the underscore and press Ctrl-Enter. A line break now appears after the underscore and before "Ante-". 17

Click the Refresh Button to update the Button. The button caption at the bottom right of the Main Form now reads "Hippolyt". the button will display the new Control Tip Text when the cursor is hovered over it: When clicked, the "Hippolyt" button will open Ante-Nicene Fathers Vol 05 to absolute page 23, which is the beginning of Book I: Note: When the Refresh Button is clicked on the Button Setup Form, button captions will also be updated. 18

Using the Field Editor to Highlight the Control Tip Text The Field Editor is useful for visually highlighting and copying multi-line text. Double-click in the Control Tip Text field to pop up the Field Editor: Press Ctrl-A to highlight all the text, and then press Ctrl-C to copy the text into memory. Close the Field Editor and paste the text from memory (Ctrl-V) into the target field. Editing a Web Button URL/Filename At the Button Setup Form, double-click inside the URL/Filename field to pop up the Field Editor: The Field Editor provides the functionality to Save and Undo changes, as needed. -- End of Button Setup Help - 19
