6 What is the World Wide Web?!! Imagine a spider web with complex links and connections and points where threads touch.!! This is what the World Wide Web is like!

7 About the Internet: How it all began!! 1958 Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) was established by the U.S. Department of Defense to the make the U.S. a leader in scientific and technological military applications.!! 1965 ARPA sponsored a study on a cooperative network of time-sharing computers. The goal was to distribute computers so that the network would survive a disaster, such as a nuclear attack.!! 1969 ARPANET, the forerunner of the Internet, was created in by ARPA. The Internet emerged from defense, scientific and educational circles.!! 1990 ARPANET ceased to exist and the first dial-up service providers began providing commercial service.!! 2011 More than 2 billion users access the Internet every day.

Buying and selling products!! Social networking! Sharing with friends and others what you re doing, including sharing pictures!! Watching and posting videos!! News and weather!! Games

10 How the Internet works!! Internet information is held on Web pages. This is a document developed using a computer coding language such as HTML (hypertext mark-up language).!! Web pages are much more colorful and interactive than word documents, other types of documents, or even books! They are very dynamic and flexible and can contain different sorts of files like text, images, videos, audio, and games.

11 URL Uniform Resource Locator!! Each Web page has its own, unique URL or Uniform Resource Locator.!! This is the Web site s particular Internet address. Like a postal address, it needs to be accurate to work. You wouldn t send a letter to No. 22, when your friend lives at No. 20.!! And when you visit people, you need to know the exact street address to ensure you visit the right house. It s the same for each Internet address!

12 Hyperlinks!! Web pages can contain links to other pages within the Web site or to other Web sites. These are called hyperlinks. Hyperlinks can be seen as underlined words. You might also find that an image is a hyperlink. Behind each hyperlink is computer code linking to another part of the Web site or containing a URL of another Web site.!! When you place the cursor arrow over the link (whether it s an image, word or a phrase), the cursor usually turns into a hand with a pointer finger. If you want to see what s next, simply click the mouse and one of these links will take you to another page or a different Web site.

13 Hyperlinks!! Take a look at the status bar at the bottom of your screen and you will see where you re going.!! The URL should appear here.

But you may also find:.edu educational university, school, or any educationally-based institution.gov.org.biz government not-for-profit group such as a charity, cooperative, or any other notfor-profit.net business the latest indicator of a business domain on the Web network provider often an ISP or large scale communications company

16 Country URL extensions!! You can also determine which country a Web site is from.!.uk United Kingdom!.tv Tuvalu!.dk Denmark!.ie Ireland!.au Australia!.nz New Zealand!.fr France!! When the country is not indicated, this usually means the Web site emanates from the United States. For example:

27 Instant Search Buttons!! The Instant Search Button in the upper right hand corner enables you to search the Web without navigating to a search provider Web site. You can set your default search provider and add more providers from the Find More Providers menu option in Internet Explorer, or Manage Search Engines menu option in Firefox.

28 Searching a page: Edit: Find!! To use Mozilla Firefox to look for text about dogs, go to Edit / Find and type dogs in the search field.

29 Searching a page: Find on Page!! With this tool you can search within a particular Web page. For instance, if you were on a web page looking for information about dogs you would type dogs in the dialog box. This is not the same as using a search engine to find information about a topic.

30 Help!! Clicking Help on the menu in your Firefox browser or Internet Explorer will open a window where you can explore answers to other questions, and find information on other topics related to surfing the Internet.

31 6 Organizing and remembering the Web sites you visit most

32 Your browsing history!! To check what pages you have visited, or which have been visited by someone using your computer, click on View > Explorer Bars > History in Internet Explorer, or History > Show All History in Firefox.

33 Organizing and remembering Web sites You ll visit many Internet sites, but will spend most of your Web time on just a few of them.!! It s helpful to store them so they re just a mouse-click away when you open your browser. Two features can help you more efficiently use your time on the Internet:!! Tabbed browsing visiting more than one Web site at once!! Bookmarks/Favorites saving a Web site so you can go back to it later

34 Tabbed browsing!! Instead of opening a separate browser window for each site you want to visit, you can open multiple sites within the same window and tab between them. You can also set a group of tabs as your home page.!! New Tab Ctrl+T allows you to open a new tab. This process is the same in Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.!! To switch between tabs, simply click on the tab you want to see. All open tabs will be visible just above your address bar.

35 Bookmarks: Mozilla Firefox!! Bookmark This Page If you like a particular Web page, you can add it to your bookmarked pages by selecting this option. You can then give the page any name you want. The more pages you add, the harder it will be to find the ones you want, so you ll need to!! Organize your bookmarks Organize your bookmarks into different folders. When you bookmark a new Web site, click the arrow next to the Folder drop-down window, then click New Folder on the next menu to create a new folder. It s easy and it is good practice to keep things arranged so they re easy to find later.

36 Favorites: Internet Explorer!! Add to Favorites If you like a particular Web page, you can add it to your favorite pages by selecting this option. The more favorites you add, the harder it will be to find the ones you want, so you ll need to!! Organize Your Favorites Organize your favorites into different folders. Select Create a Folder and provide a name. When you find a new Web site, just pop it into a relevant folder. Click on this folder and you will see your choices. It s easy and it s good practice to keep things arranged so they re easy to find later.

38 Customizing your browser Understanding the options available in your Internet browser can help you surf the Web more efficiently!! View menu options Tailoring how you view or see your Web pages!! Internet options Security, privacy, language and other settings

39 View menu options The View menu enables you to tailor the way you view or see your Web pages.!! Toolbars!! Status bar!! Explorer bar (Internet Explorer) or Sidebar (Mozilla Firefox)!! Text size!! Zoom

40 View menu: changing look of a Web page In Firefox!! Go to View > Zoom!! You can select whether you want to zoom in or out making the information on the whole screen bigger or smaller.!! You can also choose to just zoom in or our on the text.

41 View menu: changing look of a Web page In Internet Explorer!! Go to View > Text Size!! You can select the size you want to text to appear on the screen from largest to smallest.!! Changing the text size will not change the size of pictures and graphics; some time headlines are actually pictures and you need to use the zoom feature.

42 View menu: changing look of a Web page In Internet Explorer!! Go to View > Zoom!! This will seemingly increase or decrease the size of the entire Web page, text and pictures.!! You see that you can use a percentage to increase or decrease or simply zoom in or zoom out.

43 Internet Options: Mozilla Firefox!! Go to Tools > Options!! In General you can put in your own home page URL and direct your Downloads to a particular file.!! In Content you can manage fonts and colors.!! In Privacy you can choose how long your search history is kept and control your private data.!! In Security you can manage passwords and set alerts for suspect sites.

44 Internet Options: Internet Explorer!! To see Internet Options, click on Tools > Internet Options.!! You can put in your own home page URL, how long a history you want to keep (this relates to the number of pages you ve been visiting), the colors and language you want to see on the Web, and how accessible (easy to use if you have any disability) you want it to be. Once you have made your selections, simply click the Apply button and then OK. Your Internet Options will appear next time you view a Web page.

45 Other Internet Options Internet Explorer!! Security - You can specify the level of security / protection you want.!! Privacy - You can decide how receptive you want to be to cookies (see glossary for more detail on cookies) from other Web sites being downloaded to your computer.!! Content - You can control what sort of Internet content you will allow to appear on your computer.!! Connections - This allows you to set up particular Internet connections.!! Programs - Tells you what Internet and programs are linked to IE on your computer.

46 8 What will you need to get connected?

47 What will you need to get connected? 1.! Physical connection via modem, LAN, or a Wireless (Wifi) connection 2.! Computer with an operating system (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Mac OSX, etc.) 3.! Web browser on your computer to enable you to access the Internet such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox 4.! Internet Service Provider (ISP) for your connection to the Internet. Usually involves a separate monthly fee.

48 Wireless (WiFi) vs. Wired Internet!! WiFi, or wireless Internet, is available in public libraries, coffee shops, restaurants and other public places.!! You can also setup a wireless network at your home, so you can access your Internet connection from anywhere in your home without connecting your computer using a physical cable.!! A Wired Internet connection uses a physical cable to connect your computer to a cable or DSL Internet connection.

49 How to connect to WiFi!! Find the wireless network icon on your taskbar on the bottom right of your screen!! View available Wi-Fi networks by either right-clicking the icon and selecting View Available Wireless Networks. Choose the network to connect to by clicking the "Connect" button.!! Enter the security key if the wireless network is encrypted (with WEP, WPA or WPA2), you'll be prompted to enter the network password or passphrase. This will be stored for you for next time, so you'll only have to enter it once.
