Step 1 Make a folder for chart workbooks in your excel folder, Open Excel and Save your File Open up MS Excel 2010 and save your file as lesson5. In this lesson you will create tables and charts on separate worksheets. Worksheets are shown as sheet1, sheet2, etc. on the bottom of your screen. They can also be renamed to whatever you want to call them. Step 2 Clustered Column Chart Set up a table as per the screen shot below in the first worksheet in your workbook. Rename this worksheet to Clustered Column Chart. This table should be a dynamic design model so that if you change the input cells (the annual deposits and interest rate cells in yellow), the output cells (the amount) will automatically be appropriately updated. (You will need to have a formula beginning in year 1 to calculate the amount by adding the interest earned for the year to the annual yearly deposits!) Hint: You will need one unique formula in cell E6 and another unique formula in cell E7. You should be able to copy this formula in E7 down to the cell range E8:E16 and get the right answers (that should match the figures you see in the screen shot). Once you have finished the table, it s time to create the chart. Create a clustered column chart based on the Year and Amount data from your table so that it looks like the following screen shot.
Step 3 3D Column Chart In your second worksheet (same workbook!), create a table that looks like the screen shot below (you can click on the image to make it larger and easier to see if you like). Rename the worksheet from Sheet 2 to instead be 3D Column Chart. You can just enter the numbers directly that are in cells C8 to F11 but in row 12 and column G (from G8 to G12) you should use the SUM function to calculate the Totals. Once you have finished entering in the table and data, create a 3D column chart so that it looks like the screen shot below (you can click on the image to make it larger and easier to see if you like).
The chart should be on the same worksheet (i.e. the second worksheet that you renamed to 3D column chart ). Step 4 3D Pie Chart Create a new worksheet (the third worksheet) entitled 3D Pie Chart Data and enter the table of the salespeople and their corresponding order amounts as per the image below.
You can type in the data in cells K4 to K12, but in cell K13 you should use the Sum function to calculate the grand total. Create a new worksheet (the fourth worksheet) entitled 3D Pie Chart and create a pie chart entitled Order Amounts by Salesperson so that it looks like the chart screen shot below.
Step 5 XY Scatter Chart Create a new worksheet (the fifth worksheet) entitled XY Scatter Chart. On this worksheet, create a table on the left side with Cost of Capital, % in one column and NPV, $ in the second column (as in the screen shot below). You can just type the cost of capital and NPV data directly as the data appears in the screen shot below (you don t need to enter any formulas). On the right hand side, create an XY Scatter Chart that looks like the screen shot below. Step 6 Clustered Bar Chart Create a new worksheet (the sixth worksheet) and entitle it Clustered Bar Chart. Set up the table data and chart as per the screen shot image below. You don t need to make any calculations for the table data (the country and the electricity prices), just enter the data exactly as it appears in the screen shot image.
Step 7 External Data and Chart Create a new worksheet (seventh worksheet) entitled Chart from External Data and another new worksheet (eighth worksheet) entitled External Data. The Chart from External Data will show the Value of the Canadian Dollar 2001 to 2011 and should look like the screen shot image below. Here are the step by step instructions for how to get the data that is the basis for the chart (that you will put in the eighth worksheet, External Data). External Data and Charts Instructions Working With a Site that allows direct importation of data We are going bring in data and prepare it to generate Figure 1 (you should be able to use the Chart Wizard and some customizing to create the chart). The mirror image of the two series points out an important and often misunderstood fact there is 1 exchange value connecting two countries. If you went to a Canadian bank in 1950 they would have quoted (plus transactions cost) that the exchange rate is CDN dollars to buy one $US. In reporting international statistics (and on the nightly news) we ask the question what s the international value of a Canadian dollar? In 1950 the answer was, one $CDN was worth 91.5 cents US.
Figure 1 Step 1 Finding the Data First open EXCEL to a new Worksheet (not workbook) Then open your Internet search engine There are a myriad of Economic Data Sites on the WEB. The site I used was: Step 2 Downloading Data from Bank of Canada Website Go to Rates and Statistics - Exchange Rates A little more than half way down the page you should see something similar to the following:
Canadian-dollar effective exchange rate index (CERI) Replaces the C-6 index as the Bank's new measure of the value of the Canadian dollar vis-a-vis the currencies of its most important trading partners. CERI: 10-year lookup Click on CERI: 10-year lookup Under Select Options choose CSV and HTML format Under Select Dates and Rates choose: o January 1, 2003 to September 30, 2011 o Monthly CERIM Click on the submit button in the Specific date or range section. Click on the CSV option next to View or Save this data in: Save the file in your excel folder with the default name lookup.csv Open the file, copy the information in the first two columns, then paste it into your new worksheet. Your data should now look something like this: The resulting listing should provide the raw data to produce the required chart.
Step 3: Formatting Your Spreadsheet Format your worksheet to look similar to the example below: You will be required to calculate the $CAD/$USD rates using this data. Build the correct formula in column C and auto fill (NOT fill) to the last data entry. Your information should look similar to what is shown below:
Step 4: Use the Chart Wizard to create a chart similar to that of Figure 1. *** NOTE: You should understand that you can go to Stock Markets, Government data sites, Corporate Accounting data sites and use tools like this to import your data RATHER than retyping all this data which is inefficient and prone to mistakes.
