Derwent Data Analyzer Blueprint for Success Technology Report How can I quickly analyze a technology? Who are the main companies and inventors in this technology? Are there emerging trends, e.g. new target markets, new companies entering the market I can identify?

The Technology Report analyzes a technology based on Person, Organization, Country, Year, and Technology classification selections and generates an Excel-based report.

1 Derwent Data Analyzer Blueprint for Success Technology Report How can I quickly analyze a technology? Who are the main companies and inventors in this technology? Are there emerging trends, e.g. new target markets, new companies entering the market I can identify? Derwent Data Analyzer (DDA) contains three automated reports that quickly provide in-depth analyses, including the Technology Report (See also: Company Comparison Report and Company Report). The Technology Report analyzes a technology based on Person, Organization, Country, Year, and Technology classification selections and generates an Excel-based report. Run Search and Export Results in Derwent Innovation The first step before running a Technology Report is to conduct a search on a technology of interest in Derwent Innovation and export the data for analysis. Run a Technology Search 1. Run a technology search using a combination of keywords and classifications or a Smart Search 2. Optionally, click the retrive menu and select Retrieve All DWPI patent families 3. If you retrieved DWPI families, click the tools menu, select Display and Sort options, and choose to collapse by Application Number Export the data 1. From your results, click the Export button 2. Click the Format dropdown menu and select Derwent Data Analyzer 3. The default list of fields includes the best fields for analysis, including Predictive Data legal status information (dead/alive, estimated expiration dates, and remaining life calculations) 4. Optionally, give the file a name and deselect Compress file as.zip 5. Click Create to start your export 6. On the Order Status screen, wait for your export to process, then click the Available Now link to download your file The system creates a file with a pdtf extension. Simply double click the pdtf file, and DDA will automatically open and start the import process.

For example, for the Assignee/Applicant field it is recommended that you start with the DDA field that removes individuals from the final list.

For the other fields, it might be useful to run the report with non-default fields (e.g., varying Publication Country and Priority County).

It is recommended that you use both automated and manual cleaning to get the best results. For example, for the Assignee/Applicant field it is recommended that you start with the DDA field that removes individuals from the final list. Further refine this Assignee list to account for M&A activity, spelling errors, and variants of company names that were not matched using the automated algorithms in DDA. For the other fields, it might be useful to run the report with non-default fields (e.g., varying Publication Country and Priority County). Open an Assignee/Applicant Field without Names of Individuals 1. On the Summary page, locate the Assignee/Applicant fields 2. Double click Assignee/Applicant (Cleaned No Individuals) What are the other fields? Assignee/Applicant is the original assignee information Assignee/Applicant Best Available follows a hierarchy starting with DWPI Assignee data Assignee Code DWPI are the 4 letter codes assigned to companies. Consider using the DWPI Code for larger entities (C Standard Code) Automatically Clean Your Assignee/Applicant List After double clicking a field from Summary screen, a list displays. The top image shows Assignee/Applicants in the data with the most records Lists are often a starting point for your analysis. From here, you can create visualizations such as bar charts, pie charts, or word clouds. However, before you analyze the list, we recommend that you clean up your data. 1. Click the Refine tab on the ribbon 2. Click the List Cleanup icon 3. On the List Cleanup screen, select the Organization Names.fuz matching filter 4. Click the Use button to run the automated cleanup 5. After the automated cleanup finishes, a Cleanup Confirm screen displays where you can manually refine the automated suggestions

3 Derwent Data Analyzer Blueprint for Success - Technology Report 3 Manually Refine (Confirm) the Automated List Cleanup Suggestions After the automated list cleanup runs, DDA displays Combined Items recommended by the fuzzy matching filter. Drag and drop one entity onto another for additional cleanup. For example, the image shows two different companies, Korea Digital Hospital and Korea Electronics Technology, with a couple of variations identified by the filter. If you know that these are part of the same organization, you can drag and drop one into the other. DDA will combine the items in the list and run analysis on that combined item. Powerful tools help you locate potential matches, such as the Add Close Matches button and the Find box. Optionally, you can save your groupings as a Thesaurus for use with future analyses. Click Accept to create a new list with your groupings. Tips for selecting fields for the Technology Report Cleaned data performs best in the Technology Report. Use your newly cleaned Assignee/Applicant data for your analysis. For the other fields, it might be useful to run the report with non-default fields. Year and Country data can use application, basic, priority, or publication-based data. Each time and jurisdiction category will tell a different story. For example, Priority Year Earliest tells you the year in which protection for the technology was sought. Publication Country indicates target markets, but Priority Country indicates where ideas originate. Technology is represented by classification codes, but you are not limited to the DWPI Manual Code system. You can also use a less granular level like IPC/CPC classes, DWPI class, or IPC Catchwords. Run the Technology Report and Define Data Categories Be sure to have a family-based DDA file that has undergone DDA cleanup. This should happen automatically upon import. 1. Click Report on the ribbon, then select Technology Report 2. Derwent Data Analyzer will ask you to verify that the data is cleaned and, if not, it will proceed through the cleaning process

The Coverage section reflects the data analyzed, e.g., priority country and priority years 5. Select an aspect of the report you want to review in more detail on the upper left, or navigate the report sheet-by-sheet

Each sheet helps you answer key questions such as: Who are the top companies in this technology? Are there trends relating to companies, inventors and technologies? Who are the newest companies in this technology? The chart to the left shows the number of records for each new or existing Technology, represented by DWPI Manual Codes, based on priority year. This lets you quickly get a sense of how many new technology terms vs. existing technology terms there are per year.
