Interaction Narration Event Sequence Text There is a lot of excitement around this year s keynote presentation at WidgetCon The Acme Widget Company plans to announce its revolutionary new line of widgets at the convention.

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 3 Page Title: This is Dan Image of Dan Placeholder for now. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Narrator This is Dan. He sells widgets. Actually he s the top producer at Acme Widget so the company chose him to make the big announcement at the convention this year.

4 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: The Presentation Graphic of a speaker at a podium with a very bad PowerPoint slide behind him. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Dan I just don t understand it. People at WidgetCon are always excited to hear the news from Acme. I usually make a quarter of my yearly sales at the convention. When I spoke about the new wonder widget the audience was terrible. One guy in the front row fell asleep on me. People looked bored. What am I doing wrong????? Audio Narrator Why don t we look at a few of your slides?

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 5 WHAT IS A WIDGET Placeholder name for an object or, more specifically, a mechanical or other manufactured device. It is an abstract unit of production.[1] The Oxford English Dictionary defines it as "An indefinite name for a gadget or mechanical contrivance, esp. a small manufactured item" and dates this use back to 1931; but the term appears in George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart's 1924 play "Beggar on Horseback"[2]. It states that the origin is "perhaps U.S." and for etymology suggests that it may be a variant of gadget.[3] In law, when discussing a hypothetical situation the term is used to represent any type of personal property, with the corresponding term Blackacre used to represent any type of real property. In such use, the widget or Blackacre has whatever characteristics are relevant to the scenario. So, if the object being discussed needs to be a liquid, then the widget is liquid. If it needs to be solid, light, heavy, manufactured, naturallyoccurring or whatever, the widget has the necessary characteristics. Page Title: Dan s Slide #1 This is an image of Dan s slide #1. It s all text that s hard to read on a bright yellow background. Retrieved from Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Dan Look at how great this slide is. I used a really cool font and I love how the colors look together. Plus I take the time to tell the people what a widget is because they don t really know. This slide is killer! Audio Narrator Killer?? It s painful to read, I ll give you that. Do you provide sunglasses when you speak? Audio Dan No one needs to read the slide, I read everything to them. Audio Instructions Narrator Before moving on to the next screen, write in your workbook (page X) a few

6 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING improvements Dan could make to his presentation.

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 7 Page Title: Suggestions for Dan Slide #1 Suggestions for Improvement 1. The slide is easier to read by increasing the font size and reducing the amount of text. He could even change the font. 2. The bright yellow background makes the slide difficult to read. Changing the color of the slide would help. 3. Dan doesn t know his audience. Attendees to a conference about widgets probably know what one is. 4. Dan read the entire definition from the screen. Image of Dan s slide #1. The narrator s comments appear as the learner clicks on the numbers. This portion is not narrated so the learner can take his/her time going through the list. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Narrator Click the numbers to see the suggestions I had for Dan. Learner clicks the numbers to reveal the answers Click on numbers 1 to 4 and the answers appear See the image for text.

8 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: Dan s Slides #2 Another bad slide. This time with a graphs, sloppy label and very small text. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Narrator Let s take a look at your sales data slide. Audio Dan This is the best slide from my presentation I love it. Look at how well Acme Widget expects to do in 2010 with the introduction of our new widget. Audio Narrator Before moving on to the next screen, write in your workbook (page X) a few improvements Dan could make to his presentation.

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 9 Page Title: Suggestions for Dan s Slide #2 Suggestions for Improvement 1. Four charts are too much for one page. Dan should limit the slide to one chart or just the pertinent information. 2. The font is too small to read on this page 3. The color combinations are difficult to read. 4. Dan changes fonts again. His font choices should be consistent. Image of Dan s slide #1. The narrator s comments appear as the learner clicks on the numbers. This portion is not narrated so the learner can take his/her time going through the list. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Narrator Click the numbers to see the suggestions I had for Dan. Feedback forms with not very good remarks. Transition into the overview of the class modules and learning objectives for module 1. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Dan Thanks for the feedback. I can make improvements to my presentation for the nest time I give it. I hate to see this kind of feedback from attendees though. Audio Narrator Dan there are a few techniques that we haven t talked about that you can use to improve your presentations. These techniques are covered in the upcoming modules

Your job as a presenter is to reach all members of the audience with the information you have to share. Ability Novice vs. Experienced Detail Big Picture vs. In depth Urgency Need to know or nice to know When you know what your audience is looking for, it helps you to build the

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 17 presentation. Remember the presentation is about what the audience needs not the presenter.

18 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: Research What does the audience need to know? What questions does the audience have? These are your two primary research questions. The first question will help you to define your main topics or objectives of your presentation. The second question helps to guide your research. You want to anticipate the questions that the audience has about your topics. Research the answers and use them to write your presentation. This should also create a logical order for your presentation. I don t like this page. I need to work it out more. Interaction Event Sequence Text Audio Narrator Now that you know to whom you re speaking, you can start the research process. Two great questions to guide your research are Animation Audio The two sentences above will meet at the top of the screen Narrator What does the audience need to know? 24 24 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: VAK Discussion of Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic uptake. From Russell AL Fieldbook pp Maybe change the graphics since they are different than the other slides? See it. Hear it. Do it. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Narrator The information that you present needs to reach the audience so each individual can filter it through to his or her brain. People intake information in three ways Visual, Auditory or Kinesthetic. Perhaps an easier way to remember how individuals take in information is See it, Hear it, and Do it. (feel it and experience it ) Russell p.49

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 25 Audio Dan I understand the See it and Hear it parts. What about the Do it part. When I give my presentation I m the only one who is doing anything. Audio Narrator That s not necessarily true Dan. If someone in the audience takes notes she is actually doing something during the presentation. Kinesthetic people learn by doing or feeling something. The actual process of taking notes helps a kinesthetic or do it person retain information. Even evoking emotion helps these people learn new information since they also respond to how emotions make them feel. Audio Dan Oh I see.

26 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Pop Quiz We covered the different intake styles on the last slide. In your experience, which intake method do most people prefer? a. See it b. Hear it c. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Narrator In the United States, 60% of learners prefer visual delivery of information or visual delivery combined with another form. That doesn t mean that you can forget about the other 40% of the people attending your presentation. The best presentations contain elements that appeal to all types of people. You can combine most uptake methods throughout your

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 29 presentation. For example, a great image can tie into your presentation and help participants remember what you said. Participants link what you said with the image.

30 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: Caution Caution: Text & Lecture Combination of reading and listening doesn t always work Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Narrator The combination of reading and listening doesn t always work. 36 36 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: PowerPoint Tips Dan s PowerPoint Tips for using PowerPoint Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Narrator There are alternatives to PowerPoint but if you do choose to use PowerPoint, Dan compiled a few of his favorite PowerPoint tips.

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 37 Page Title: Break the rules Slide discussing the 7 X 7 Rule Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Dan Have you ever heard of the 7 x 7 rule for PowerPoint? You know 7 words per line, 7 lines or bullet points per slide? Like most people who will watch your presentation you re reading the slide and not paying attention to what I m saying. What if we made our own rule of 7? No more than 7 words per page?

38 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: A picture is worth a thousand words Slide of an image with the sentences A picture is worth a thousand words. A picture is worth a thousand words. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Dan I went to the beach on my last vacation. I could follow the 7x7 rules to write a slide to explain my experience but would it be as memorable as this image? Powerful images accompanied by you telling your story in the presentation leave an impression on the attendees.

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 39 Page Title: Words Text can make a compelling slide. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Dan This is a slide that a presenter used while he spoke about Pecha Kucha. This is the Japanese presentation style. Where the presenter uses only 20 slides and has 20 seconds to speak about each slide. The slide captures the main points that the speaker makes during this part of the presentation. This slide is more visually appealing to the audience and there isn t enough text to cause the audience to choose between reading

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 41 Best Selling Ice Cream Flavors at the Ice Cream Shop Page Title: Graphs, charts and Tables Image of a chart showing data. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Dan Let s look at a graph for a few moments. It tells us that Vanilla is the customers favorite ice cream flavor at this ice cream shop. Vanilla, then chocolate, and strawberry. If you are in the audience in a large lecture hall you can t read the key to the chart. Plus it s a pretty boring slide. What if we rearranged things a little bit? Say we want to let our audience know that vanilla is the most popular flavor at the ice cream shop.

42 STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING Page Title: Ice cream Image of a girl eating ice cream. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction Audio Dan This slide tells the same story but it does it in a different way. Compare the two slides (use the back button to review the other slide). Jot down a few notes that describe what you like or dislike about each slide. Does one slide evoke more emotion? Which slide is more visually appealing? Remember that 60% of our audience prefers visual intake of information.

STORYBOARD FOR PRESENTATION TRAINING 43 Page Title: More tips Be creative! Text and bullet points are boring! I d like to work this one out a little bit more. Keep your PowerPoint slides consistent throughout the slideshow. Use the same colors, fonts and similar images. Only use two fonts per presentation. Fonts should be very similar or complementary opposites. Interaction Event Sequence Interaction
