1 IHS Goldfire Quick Start Guide to Researcher and Innovation Trend Analysis Greg Dance, Technical Account Manager 2014 Background Goldfire provides the ability to research a complete concept found in one sentence of a document. A concept is different from just key words. A concept is based on multiple words used in a particular way. A touch panel is a concept. Here the word touch refers to a type of panela touch panel. To touch a panel is a different concept. We are still using the same basic two words but now touch is what we are doing to the panel. Goldfire is not concerned about whether two words are immediately next to each other or not. Of greater concern is if the words are used in the same way: When searching for a capacitive panel, Goldfire would consider the capacitive panel and a capacitive touch panel to be equally relevant matches. Most keyword search tools would place a capacitive touch panel further down the results list. Words such as to, a, and the in a search phrase don t have to be found in matching documents. Using them in a search phrase simply clarifies the usage of the surrounding words: to touch the panel vs. the touch panel Left ambiguous, results for both will be returned. HELP! IHS Goldfire always has text based and video help Semantic Matches Semantic matches in Goldfire are ones where the complete concept is precisely matched. If only part of the concept is matched or the words are found, but not used in the same way, it is considered to be only a keyword match. The Basics After entering a research phrase, Goldfire compiles a list of matching sentences and documents. Results can be viewed in many different ways. The left side of the screen provides a traditional list view of matching documents and the number of documents matching the search criteria: While a list view can be useful at times, the burden is upon the researcher to find interesting ideas buried in these documents. Since Goldfire understands the grammar of a sentence, Goldfire can scan through all the sentences which match your concept semantically and pull out an executive summary of interesting facts such as More Specific examples of your concept: More Specific is only one of many different lenses to draw focus on a particular concept. 2 Avoid queries with one excessively complex concept- Goldfire needs to find the complete concept in one sentence to be a semantic match. Only semantically matched sentences can return answers to the lenses. More Advanced Topics: If a broad topic such as solar cell is researched there will be thousands of matching sentences from which facts can be found. Clicking on an item in the lens changes the list on the left to show only documents providing that answer: What you want to know about: Solar cell advantages May not be how people document the idea: Solar cells provide power where utility runs are too expensive Since Solar cell Advantages or advantages of solar cells is never actually stated in the above sentence it would not be considered a relevant match. The category Advantages automatically collects advantages Goldfire finds related to your topic. The best practice is to leave out the word advantages from the search phrase and just search solar cells Relative words: low or high mean different things to different people. For example a high efficiency solar panel today operates at a different efficiency level than a high efficiency solar panel from 20 years ago. Avoid relative words if possible and simply look in the various lenses in the Parameter category. Breaking down a complex concept into multiple simple concepts separated by the Boolean operator <AND > can help you find a complex idea when the various concepts do not appear all in one sentence but they are found in the same document: Silicon nitride tube <and> manufacturing The Categories can focus on each of these concepts. In this case manufacturing is still discussed in the document but emphasis has been put on silicon nitride tubes: In addition to <AND> there are other operators available: Concept 1 <OR> Concept 2 Concept 1, Concept 2 (Concept 1 <or> Concept 2) <and> Concept 3 Either concept in the document Both concepts in the same sentence Use parenthesis too! Goldfire works around the clock Run a search which returns interesting results? Click on Set Query Alert and the Goldfire server will new results as they become available.

3 Using Innovation Trend Analysis allows greater control when searching patents alone and visual charting the results. The Assignee The Inventor The Patent Class References to an Existing Patent Results: After clicking on Analyze results are displayed graphically in the Overview tab as well as in several other tabs which focus on Patent Classes, Inventors, Assignees, and Patents. Want to be kept abreast of developments in this technology field? Once you have constructed your search constraints click on Save Query In the pop-up window which appears, provide a descriptive name for your saved query, the frequency to perform the search and who to the results to. Then click Save Query Saved Queries search the specified Knowledge Base Collections on the schedule you specify. When Goldfire determines there are new documents matching your criteria it s the matches to the address you have specified. This does not have to be a Goldfire user.

4 Innovation Trend Analysis can best be learned by exploration. If you would like to focus your research on comparing various companies IP holdings use the option to Analyze Companies: Analyze Technology - The emphasis here is on the technology. You can see all the key players in the technology of your interest. Analyze Companies- Users are encouraged to view the data with an emphasis on one or more companies. Analyze Patent References- View a chart of forward and backward patent references Customizing the Company If more than one matching company name is found in the Assignee field of the patents, you will have a chance to clarify which organizations you are referring to. You can even save the selected organizations as a group for easy recall later: Tip: When searching on a particular technology in Innovation Trend Analysis, you may want to first use the Researcher application to verify your search technology phrase does, in fact, find the types of content you are expecting. Tip: If your Company Activity chart shows a lack of activity for a recent period when there was a lot of activity in preceding years, it may be because applications are not yet approved by the patent office or could indicate the company filed patents under an Assignee name you are not currently searching against Results are displayed graphically in the Overview tab as well as in several other tabs which focus on Patent Classes, Inventors, Assignees, and Patents.

5 If you know there have been mergers in the past or simply a company name change, you can use the Manage Assignee Groups option to manage your saved company groups. This lets you add in all the other name variations. Tip: If you want to be sure you aren t overlooking what patents a company may have control over, you ll want to search on the names of their inventors too as company names are sometimes left out of the Assignee field.
