China Summary In this paper, the author has paved the way for those technicians engaged in yak by analyzing the type, characteristics of yak documents, and also introducing the updated information sources both domestic and abroad as well as the retrieval methods. Keywords: Yak document, information source Introduction What is yak document? To be brief, yak document is the assembly of various kinds of documents information related to yak science and technology. In terms of carrier, yak document can be categorized into the following types: printed form, microform, audio-visual form, machine-readable form and electronic form document; while in terms of publication form, yak document can also be classified as books (monographs, textbooks and tool books), periodical article, scientific report, conference document, patent document, standard document, dissertation, government publication, product material, scientific and technical archive, newspaper, news release, work note and so on. Therefore, we can also understand yak document in this way: yak document is the carrier of all yak-related knowledge and information that are mainly recorded by means of sign, picture, character, audio and video. According to the definition of yak document, the present yak document has the following eminent characteristics that are very useful to help yak technician make better use of it. 1) Yak document has various categories and diverse carriers. Yak document has lots of new carriers as electronic devices, network and so on beside book, periodical, patent, dissertation, technical report conference proceeding and other traditional ways. 2) Yak document is widely scattered and its content is repeated. Yak document, especially periodical articles, is mainly publicized on professional key journals, but there are still parts of them publicized on related journals and the journals of related marginal field. As to the same document, it is very common that it is reported in various types, such as meeting paper being publicized on journals. 3) Yak document has a short renewal cycle. With the fast development of science and technology, the speed with which knowledge is upgraded is accelerated. According to statistics, the average life span of different types of yak document are as follows, book: years, dissertation: 5-7 years, periodical: 3-5 years, standard document: 5 years. Generally, the half life of yak document is 5-8 years. ( half life indicates that in a certain field the publication of the relative new half of all the present document). 4) The retrieval tools of yak document are diverse, and the coverage, entry and index of different yak documents vary. For example, printed retrieval devices include bibliography, index, abstract and so on; electronic and network retrieval devices also contain bibliography, abstract and full-text database. the document, type and embody year of different database are diversified, and some of them are seriously repeated. For example, a periodical article can be retrieved from all the following database CNKI, WANFANG DATA and VIP due to reasons like the lack of uniform regulations on entry and index, the inaccuracy of classification and the irrationality of subject word, the accuracy and integrity of the retrieval of documents have been greatly influenced. Besides, as to regulations on retrieval technique, different database has its own specific rules, and this has caused a lot of inconvenience in mastering the tool. In order to facilitate yak technicians to get to know and retrieve related documents, this paper is to give a brief introduction of the present yak document and its information sources at home and abroad. The information sources of yak document in China Printed type 1) Index of yak documents on world is complied by Liu Xi and Yu Sijiu, international yak document research institute of the library of Gansu agricultural university. It is published by Gansu Renmin press in Sept This index has embodied 2005 yak periodical articles (including Chinese and English versions) publicized at home and abroad during 1950 to 2000, author and key-word retrievals are attached to it. It is a ideal printed bibliographical-typed retrieval tool to search yak document. This index has not only publicized printed edition, but also electronic edition, which is developed by Beijing Chaoxing digital Co., Ltd., furthermore the electronic index has been linked to the homepage of the website of the library of Gansu agricultural university by the hyperlink characteristic service. Disc and network type 1) CAJ Full-text Database (CJFD), is publicized by Tsinghua Tongfang Co., Ltd. in At present, it has embodied more than 6100 key journals and professional journals, they are categorized into 9 volumes and 126 subjects. It is a large-scale integrated and multifunctional full-text retrieval system, and it provide various ways of service for customers, such as publicizing disc, building mirror image pages and providing remote access to the database. Up to May. 2004, this database has embodied documents, among them 837 periodical articles refer to yak research, and they can be read, printed and downloaded to your personal computer with the help of the browser CAJviewer. the library of Gansu Agricultural University has built up mirror image for all the 9 volumes of CNKI. If users want to have remote retrieval service through Internet, they can logon websites after signing contract with the database company. 3 South center of China: Northwest center of China: 2) China Doctor/Master s Dissertations Full-text Databases (CDMD) with more than 110,000 documents and the renewal rate of 2800 annually, has embodied the dissertations (masters and doctors ) of more than 307 universities and research institutes in our motherland, hey are categorized into 9 volumes and 121 subjects. The disc data is upgraded every 3 month, and the data on the web is upgraded everyday. Up to now, there are 13 documents related to yak research, they can be retrieved through various ways, such as key word, author, tutor s name, abstract, full text and so on. There are 3 ways to get access to it, they are: purchasing disc edition of it, building mirror image site and remote visit through Internet. As to individuals, they can buy personal card of different denomination, and logon the web to activate the card, then login to use the database, this service can be used any where any time, because the IP address is not restricted. 3) The Chinese digital journals, is complied and published by Beijing Wanfang data Co., Ltd.. It has embodied more than 3000 domestic Chinese key journals since 2001, among them there are more than 50 journals are under the category of farming & birds-and-beasts medicine. There are more than 200 periodical articles relate to yak research in this database. It covers social science, natural science, industrial technology, aviation and astronautics, communication and transportation, environmental protection and so on. The professional range includes new technology, new product, new craft, new material, new design and other technological achievement. It is the designated national database for searching the results of scientific research. Up to now it has embodied technological results. 8) Chinese national standard database, the resources of it is provided by China national quality and technology supervision bureau, it has embodied national standards of different kinds. It has embodied more than 8000 domestic Chinese technological periodicals, the recording of this database is more than , and among them there are 863 yak documents. The way of service includes publishing discs, building mirror image site and remote access through Internet. From the above foreign language retrieval tool we can find a certain amount of information related to yak document. At present, it has more than 200 database products (including data type, abstract type and full-text type). The databases related to agriculture and yak is as follows: a. 5 The above mentioned databases have already been brought into our country, and the library of China agricultural university has built up the mirror image site for them. Now the library provides profitable services to the agricultural intelligent units all around our country. 2) Information searching system with STN international online. Beijing Wanfang data Co., Ltd., as the head agency of STN European service center (FIZ), is in charge of training STN users, applying for accounts and other related tasks. Nowadays STN system has more than 200 databases, it is a famous international networking retrieval system co-established by German, Japan and American in 1983, and it start providing powerful WEB retrieval service. At present, we can retrieve STN index archives for free through this website, and we can find lots of documents that are related to yak. There are 3 accesses to STN system: a. Conclusion Through analyzing yak document and its characteristic, distribution and domestic and overseas information resources, we can conclude that yak document scatters widely. If we are not familiar with its information resources, it is difficult to carry out a complete, systematic and accurate retrieval. The present situation reminds us of putting the building of international yak document database on the agenda, and now the international yak information research center of the library of Gansu Agricultural University is planning to build this database. Wish it could be successful soon, so that we can contribute something to the development of yak science.
