3 HeartCode PALS Administrator Guide This guide contains information about installing and using the HeartCode PALS System version. It will begin with installation instructions and then continue with a description of general use. You can find information about the medical training content in the HeartCode PALS Student Guide. You can find the latest updates, FAQs and documentation here: Visit the Download Center of the site to check for program updates or newer software versions. Installing HeartCode PALS Systems This section describes the minimum requirements and steps needed to install HeartCode PALS. System overview The HeartCode PALS System Version consists of two elements: 1. The HeartCode PALS Cognitive System CD (Part 1) a. This disc contains the cognitive portion of the HeartCode PALS program. 2. The Laerdal License Server CD a. 4 HeartCode PALS System Version provides access to the cognitive portion of the HeartCode PALS program only. An skills practice and testing session must be completed with an AHA PALS instructor to meet course requirements. 5 Minimum requirements Laerdal License Server: OS: Windows XP, 2003, Vista, 2008 CPU: Pentium 3 or equivalent RAM: 512MB HD: 50MB free Space Internet Access (required for sending AHA reports) HeartCode PALS Part 1: OS: Windows XP SP3+, Windows Vista SP1+, Windows 7 CPU: Pentium 4 or equivalent RAM: 512 MB (768MB+ recommended) HD: 500MB free (for caching) Flash player 9.0 or higher Monitor capable of showing 16bit color in 1024*768 resolution Internet Explorer 6.0+ Laerdal License Server installation The first step in using the HeartCode PALS System Version is installing the Laerdal License Server software. Detailed information can be found in the License Server Administrator Guide in the software package. Licenses After completing the Laerdal License Server installation, users will need to be set up and licenses for HeartCode PALS will need to be entered. 6 It is important that all the keys are entered into the Laerdal License Server, since each key opens up specific functionality in the HeartCode PALS program. HeartCode PALS Cognitive (Part 1) installation Proceed with installing the HeartCode PALS Cognitive software on one or more PCs, and configuring them to use the Laerdal License Server. Please note that you will not be able to use HeartCode PALS Part 1 without connecting to a License Server. Check here for newer versions and the latest news before beginning installation: Visit the Download Center of the site by clicking Downloads in the left-hand navigation menu or Download center on the main section of the home page. Once there, click HeartCode PALS to check for the most recent version. If there is not a more recent version, proceed as follows: 1. Insert Cognitive System CD from the software package and launch Setup.exe. 2. Accept the disclaimer. 3. Select the installation path and select Next. 4. Select the option Network installation and enter the IP address for the Laerdal License Server. 5. The installation program will detect whether you have an up-to-date version of Flash Player installed and install it if needed. Select Next. 6. HeartCode PALS Part 1 will now be installed and ready to use. 7. Repeat steps 1 to 5 on other PCs that students will use to complete HeartCode PALS Part Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 6 18/06/

7 For information on advanced installation options (network push, PC images, etc) see the FAQ on Verifying HeartCode PALS Cognitive System installation Please note that the verification described here uses up one license, so be sure to use an actual username. * To verify that Part 1 (Cognitive) is working, please follow these steps: 1. Create a user in the Laerdal License Server and assign a license to this user. 2. Go to a PC with HeartCode PALS Part 1 installed. 3. Log in as the user, navigate through the program, and start the introduction scenario. 4. After passing the introduction scenario, please verify that you received a green checkmark. 5. Log out. 6. If installing on more than one PC, go to a different PC with HeartCode PALS Part 1 installed. 7. Log in as the same user and verify that you can see the green checkmark and that you can still access the scenarios. ** * You can also carry out this verification by using the built in Demo functionality. ** Skip this step if your setup only has one PC with HeartCode PALS Part 1 installed. 7 Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 7 18/06/

8 Using HeartCode PALS System Version Before you start The following information about using HeartCode PALS requires that the system has been installed and is up and running correctly. Administrating HeartCode PALS with the License Server It is important to understand that the Laerdal License Server acts as the central user database where all the users and their progress details are kept. HeartCode PALS Part 1 connects to the Laerdal License Server to obtain user and license information. The Laerdal License Server has its own separate manual. Please read the separate manual before using the License Server. The following gives a quick overview with excerpts from the Laerdal License Server manual: Laerdal License Server overview The LS has several purposes: It manages and distributes licenses in a multi-user environment. o It can be used to create users and for basic user administration. It reports American Heart Association (AHA) related activity over the Internet to a central Laerdal server. 8 Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 8 18/06/

9 Adding licenses Before you can start to use HeartCode PALS, you must add licenses into the Laerdal License Server. 1. Open the Laerdal License Server from the start menu. 2. Click Add Licenses under the License overview section. 3. Type in or paste the license key (a series of random letters and numbers) and click OK. 4. Select Internet if applicable, select Next, and then Connect to activate the license key. 5. A window should open and tell you that your key has been activated. 6. Repeat steps 2-5 if you received more than one license key. User creation / administration You can create new users in the License Server and manage basic user information such as changing passwords or granting access to new licenses. Steps to create a new user and give them access to a license: 1. Open the Laerdal License Server from the start menu. 2. Click Add user under the Users section. 3. Type in the user s login. Notice that the password will be the same as the user name by default. This can be changed if desired. 4. Select which licenses the user can access. To do this, you must check the box next to each license. Usually all licenses must be selected. 9 Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 9 18/06/

10 Using HeartCode PALS Part 1 Cognitive This setup gives the user access to the cognitive portion only. A manual skills practice and test would need to be completed with an AHA PALS Instructor. The following steps outline usage of HeartCode PALS Part 1 Cognitive portion: 1. The administrator is informed about a new user, who will complete Part 1 Cognitive portion, and creates the student as a new user in the Laerdal License Server by reserving 1 (one) Cognitive license. 2. The administrator provides the student with the login information to complete the cognitive portion on a PC with HeartCode PALS Part 1 installed. 3. The student starts HeartCode PALS Part 1 on one of the PCs with the program installed. 4. The student logs in with the username and password provided by the administrator. Once logged in, the student enters his/her first and last names and selects the appropriate Provider level. 5. After successfully completing the Part 1 Cognitive portion, the student can view or print the Part 1 certificate. 6. The student is then responsible for successfully completing the required skills practice and test administered by an AHA PALS instructor to receive an AHA PALS Provider card. The student must bring the printed HeartCode PALS Part 1 certificate and complete the required skills practice and testing within 60 days Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 10 18/06/

11 AHA PALS Provider Card Information Users who successfully complete both HeartCode PALS Part 1 Cognitive and HeartCode PALS Parts 2 and 3 Skills Practice and Testing with an AHA PALS Instructor are eligible to receive a PALS Provider card from the American Heart Association. The required skills tests must be completed within 60 days of completing HeartCode PALS Part 1. Call AHA-4CPR for an AHA PALS Training Center near you. Institutions using HeartCode can choose to have Laerdal process AHA cards through the Laerdal Medical Training Center. If you choose to have AHA cards processed by the Laerdal Medical Training Center, the License Server reporting options will need to be set up appropriately by following the instructions below: 1. Open Laerdal License Server. 2. Click on the Manage server button above the Users field and select Reporting options. 3. Answer the two questions appropriately. Select yes to have the Laerdal Medical Training Center issue and ship cards to you. Also indicate if you will be sending your reports manually or if you would like to send the reports automatically. 4. Complete the fields in the Provider address screen, including the address to which cards will be shipped. (For Instructor name, an administrator s name can be inserted, followed by -Admin.) Please review the instructor or administrator name entered here since it will appear exactly as entered on the AHA completion card issued by the Laerdal Medical Training Center Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 11 18/06/

12 5. The manual skills check-off sheets that are completed and signed by an AHA PALS Instructor must be faxed to the Laerdal Medical Training Center. The AHA PALS Instructor s card must also be faxed to the Laerdal Medical Training Center at along with the student skills checkoff sheets. Please note that if you do not want the Laerdal Medical Training Center to issue your AHA completion cards, then select no to the first question about this option in the Laerdal License Server. When Laerdal Medical Training Center receives your completed reports, AHA cards will be printed and mailed to your institution. Laerdal Medical Training Center will only mail a batched group of AHA cards to one administrator at an institution who will then need to distribute the cards to individual students. The normal turnaround time is two to four weeks. For card inquiries, refer to the contact information below: ahacards@laerdal.com Phone: , ext 2273 (CARD) Fax: Recertification If the administrator runs the report in the License Server and discovers that a user is due for recertification, he/she should do the following: 1. Open the License Server and find the login of the user who needs to recertify. 2. Administrator creates a new user with a similar login and grants a new license by checking the license box Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 12 18/06/

13 Example: If the user s previous login was SmithPaul, then the new login should be SmithPaul2. 3. Administrator informs the user that he/she must recertify and provides the new login information. If a user tries to log in after a certain period of time since passing the course, the user will be prompted to recertify. By default the Laerdal License Server is set to prompt for recertification 18 months after completion of the HeartCode PALS course. The recertification time frame can be changed under Recertification options in the Laerdal License Server. Advanced technical information Change the Laerdal License Server IP address If your License Server changes IP address, you will need to configure HeartCode PALS to point to the new IP address. To change the License Server IP settings: 1. Log in to HeartCode PALS. 2. Go to Licenses. 3. Select Manage Licenses. 4. Select Advanced. 5. Change the settings. Alternatively you can change the address in the registry under: HKLM\Software\Laerdal Sophus\HeartCode PALS\1.0\ServerIP Add Create new user button It might be desirable to add a Create new user button to the login screens. 14 user account. If this is enabled, then a policy to allow users to get their own license must be set up in the Laerdal License Server. You can also enable this button without creating a policy in the License Server, but then users will not be able to start the courses before you manually assign a license to them. Backup All user and course data is stored in the Laerdal License Server. To perform backups all that is needed is to backup the Laerdal License Server installation folder. Troubleshooting No connection to Laerdal License Server Please check these items before calling Laerdal help desk Has the License Server been installed correctly? - Is the service running? - Are there licenses available in the Laerdal License Server? - If yes, have these licenses been made available to a user either by giving access while creating the user or by creating a license policy? Is there a Firewall blocking the Laerdal License Server? - The Laerdal License Server must be able to communicate on port with HeartCode PALS Part Heartcode_PALS_administrator-guide_dvd-booklet.indd 14 18/06/

15 Certificates can t be accessed from HeartCode PALS A common cause is that the Laerdal License Server does not have Internet access or access to the Laerdal report server. The AHA requires that reports are sent every 30 days. Please go to the advanced options and select Send report now. If the report status is not updated, then there is a connection problem. Check the log file for more detail.
