GATES Web ReadMe Configuration Instructions Version 5.06 Last Modified: 16 April 2018 A large number of problem reports with GATES have been caused by incorrect settings on the user's PC. While it is true that users can change these settings, the changes only apply to the user s profile on that specific computer. That means each user potentially has to configure every computer they use. This document contains client machine configurations that are recommended to run the GATES Web application. NOTE: Some settings that are recommended in this document might be controlled by a group policy such as the Standard Desktop. Users and administrators should check with local LAN Workgroup Manager to verify how these settings should be applied on the target machine. Internet Explorer This web application is designed to work using Internet Explorer (IE) 10 and 11. NOTE: The instructions below are illustrated using IE11 on a Windows 10 machine. Other versions of Internet Explorer and/or Windows operating systems have similar settings but might be accessed in a slightly different way. To ensure correct GATES software behavior, edit the following browser properties: Page 1 of 21

1. From Internet Explorer, Click on the Tools button, and then Internet Options. Page 2 of 21

2. Click the Connections tab. 3. Click the LAN settings button. 4. Ensure Bypass proxy server for local addresses is checked. 5. Then select the Advanced button. Page 3 of 21

6. Put the URL of the local GATES server in the Exceptions field Contact your local network/computer support section for proxy server information. For example, at McGuire AFB, the GATES server is named gateswri1a.mcguire.af.mil, and so gateswri1a.mcguire.af.mil should be included in the list of addresses that bypass the base proxy. It is important to NOT place the header of the URL in the "bypass proxy". For SDDC, TMO, Track and Trace and ACA users enter: The full server name without wildcards must be used on tablets running the GATES Offline Inventory Applications. * Your exact site name can be obtained from the C2CallCenter at DSN Then select OK to return to the Internet Options window. 8. Select the Security tab. 9. Under Select a zone to view or change security settings, click the Trusted sites icon. Page 4 of 21

10. Click the Sites button. Page 5 of 21

11. Look at the list of sites under Web sites for your server name, (ip address if accessing an RGATES), or a mask (i.e, *.mil) that includes your server. If an entry or entries do not already exist that meet this criteria, accomplish the step below. 12. Under Add this Web site to the zone: enter: base. service.mil/ (i.e. Depending on their specific site configuration, some RGATES users must enter the IP address of the RGATES server ( 13. Click the Add button and then the Close button to return to the Internet Options window. Page 7 of 21

14. Select the Advanced tab: 15. Scroll down to the bottom. 16. Check Use TLS 1.0, Use TLS 1.1, and Use TLS 1.2. Page 8 of 21

17. Scroll up slightly. 18. UnCheck Do not save encrypted pages to disk. 19. Click the OK button. Page 9 of 21

The GATES web application uses pop-up windows. To verify whether the Pop-up blocker property is checked: 20. Select the Privacy Tab: If the Turn on Pop-up Blocker properety is checked, follow the instructions below which will allow the GATES application to work properly: ** If Turn on Pop-up Blocker is grayed out, contact your local system administrator. 21. Select the Settings button: Page 10 of 21

Under Address of Web site to allow: If the site being accessed is an RGATES/DGATES site, enter the site name in one of the two the following formats depending on the configuration at the RGATES/DGATES site: or If the site being accessed is a GATES site, enter the site name in the following format: If the site being accessed is the Central Site (SDDC, TMO, Track and Trace and ACA users), enter the site name in the following format *Your exact site name can be obtained from the C2CallCenter at DSN Then click the Add button. 23. Click the Close button to return to the Internet Options window. Page 11 of 21

24. Click the OK button to accept the changes NOTE: If the user is getting a lot of prompts while using GATES Web, there are other changes that can be made to the browser settings to eliminate those pop-ups. Page 12 of 21

Configure Java Java/Java Upgrades GATES Web ReadMe Configuration Instructions The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) plug-in is also used by some pages within the application. GATES requires that JRE be associated with the Internet Explorer browser. An administrator should perform the following steps to install and configure the required version of the JRE. These steps should be accomplished by the administrator even if the required version of the JRE is already installed on the client PC. 1. Verify that a version of the JRE is associated with the browser. a. Bring up Internet Explorer. b. From the Tools Menu choose Internet Options. c. Click the Programs tab. d. Click the Manage add-ons button. Page 14 of 21

e. Choose All add-ons from the dropdown. 2. Scroll down to the Oracle America, Inc. section and ensure all Java Plug-ins are enabled. Page 15 of 21

3. If the machine requires an updated version of the JRE (see step 1 for identification), the latest JRE can be downloaded free of charge. Instructions for downloading and installing the plug-in can be found at JRE/Enable TLS 1.0/1.1/1.2 The following steps need to be accomplished to ensure that TLS 1.0 is enabled in the JRE. This setting must be enabled for proper function of Java applets used in GATES. 1. From the Start Menu Choose the Windows System\Control Panel. 2. From the Control Panel, click on the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel. Page 16 of 21

3. Select the Advanced Tab. 4. Scroll to the bottom. 5. Select Use TLS 1.0, Use TLS 1.1, and Use TLS Select OK button to accept the changes. Page 17 of 21

Adobe Reader Adobe Reader is used for viewing and printing reports. The Acrobat Reader can be downloaded free of charge. Follow the directions at for the latest Adobe Reader download and installation. This web application has been tested using Adobe Reader 9, X (10), XI (11), and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC. Adobe Reader X users may have minor issues printing reports. A work around is noted below. NOTE: For best results, printers used for printing GATES pdf reports should be configured by a network administrator to use a PostScript (PS) driver. A PCL driver can be used, but in some cases it produces garbled printouts. NOTE: When using Adobe Reader X, the report text may be slightly cropped when printed. The Fit radio button under Size Options must be selected when printing reports to prevent cropping. There is a configuration setting in Adobe Reader 9 that must be set for GATES. The steps below should be accomplished to ensure reports are generated properly: 1. Select Adobe Reader from the Start/Programs menu. 2. Select Preferences from the Adobe Reader Edit Menu. Page 18 of 21

3. Select Internet from the Categories list. 4. Check Display in Read Mode by default under the Web Browser Options, then select OK Security Certificate GATES Web application is only accessible through SSL. Please follow the download and installation instructions at the following link under the section End User Installation on Any Windows Machine : NOTE: This site is only accessible to users on.mil networks via CAC. NOTE: There will be times during the execution of the GATES application that the user will be prompted to accept certificates. If this occurs while using the application, the user should choose to "always trust content from this publisher" and choose to accept the certificate. Page 19 of 21

Additional Information/Help For additional GATES information and support, please visit the GATES Informational CoP: NOTE: This site is only accessible to users on.mil networks via CAC. Please open a ticket with the C2CallCenter at DSN if you have problems with running the GATES software. 32Bit/64 Bit Browser Support The GATES Web application can be accessed with a 32-bit or 64-bit Internet Explorer Browser. If the PC is being utilized as an RFID Tag burn station that has a Savi Docking station attached via the COM port, a 32 Bit browser MUST be used. This restriction does not apply to USB cable RFID burns. First, to use a 32-bit version of Internet Explorer, it must be configured with the 32-bit JRE. Likewise, to use a 64-bit version of Internet Explorer, it must be configured with the 64-bit JRE. Note: The following workaround must be accomplished to use a 64 bit version of Internet Explorer with a 64-bit version of the JRE. Adding a registry Key (If you are unsure about doing this please contact your CST for assistance): 1. Open a Command Prompt or Powershell and type regedit.exe and hit return 2. The registry will open, drill down to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main 3. If there is a Name entry with the value TabProcGrowth on the right side of this windows already, skip to step At the top select Edit New DWORD This will create a New Value #1 5. Change the name to TabProcGrowth (without the quotes) 6. Right click and select Modify and set the value 0 (by default is should be set to zero), then hit OK Page 20 of 21
