2 From the Tuition Manager. Greetings, The process Microsoft has adopted for getting computers changed to Windows 10 is not well regarded by the industry; it really is Big Brother tactics. In August the cost of changing will be around $160. It is difficult to reach a satisfactory recommend re the change, and in my case I have two options to consider. At home I have upgraded to 10 but am rarely aware of that because my desktop did not change from 7. For the Centre, it would be good to be able to offer help with 7 and 8.1 and by the time you read this I hope to have 8.1 and 10 in room 15. There are still many supporters of the industry not recommending an upgrade, and in some commercial situations there is still a problem with heritage (i.e. old world) software. There are some supporters offering to make Windows 10 look more like Windows 7 and I do recommend that. If you are thinking of this change make sure that you know what you will loose from Windows 10. A useful aspect of Windows 10 is having an anti-virus app that starts to work when other apps are not available. However, as you can read elsewhere, defender is not at the top of the effectiveness list at the moment so it might be worth considering other anti-virus apps. Both AVG and Avast are still held in high regard and Ad-Aware is also a good offering. But they all try very hard to grab money off you and offer other apps on the side (such as Bing) which need to be un-ticked. Looking at the July course schedule, it does reflect the change to Windows 10 but please, if you do decide to stay with earlier versions let us know and we will run the level 3 Windows courses in the systems still being used. Rob has a new handbook for the digital camera course and this might lead to splitting up the course to two levels which members have been asking for over several years. The Tutors Jim Air Peter Ashley Christine Bibby bibbychristine@gmail.com Rhonda Giles Rob Gordon Faith Grausch Barbara Heath David Helas Les Howe Michael McMahon Shirley Nicholas Jim O Hara Bob Oldnall Linda Pinder Roy Pyle Dick Richards Allan Rouse Doug Turner Patricia Wade If you are unable to attend a class please advise the office. 2
3 Housekeeping and Security course is a moving feast, but does cover many aspects of the security of Windows 10. Files and Folders looks at 10, and the new version of File Explorer can bear exploring. The spreadsheet course is using Excel from Office The new boy on the block is an attempt to explore and offer familiarity with comments such as Meet us on Facebook after FairGo on a Wednesday, or follow us on Twitter If you do this every week, please join us and help us novices (I am one) to work out what is going on. Remember that you can book courses via the website. The password is snetg. See you at the Mayfield centre.
