2 Get started Activate your computing account We re looking forward to welcoming you to the University of Liverpool! This guide will help you to understand the IT services you ll use as a student. The great thing is that you can get started before you arrive on campus so that you re all set for the start of term. The first thing you need to do is to activate your University computing account online at liverpool.ac.uk/activate You will need: Your Student ID number that you can find in your Welcome Pack To set a memorable and secure password for your account: we offer some advice about choosing a good password on our website at liverpool.ac.uk/csd/security Once you ve activated your account you will receive: A username that you will use to access the majority of IT services and resources including the University network A University address Secure file space, known as your M: drive, where you should save your work You will be sent an with your username: don t delete this as it might be useful to refer to when you arrive on campus. There s a useful online checklist to download and lots of information about our services. IT Quickstart is available on our website at: liverpool.ac.uk/csd/quickstart Use IT Quickstart to find out how to: Set up your University and access your secure M: drive file space Connect your own device to the high-speed University network Access essential services such as the virtual learning environment (VITAL) and the student portal (Liverpool Life) Download training materials which will help you to improve your IT skills Get help during Welcome Week and beyond Check out student news, important announcements and useful tools on the student homepage: student.liverpool.ac.uk

Email Connect and communicate When you have activated your computing account online at liverpool.ac.uk/activate you will be given a University email address.

Information from your tutors, lecturers and other official University channels will be sent to your University address. You MUST check your University account on a regular basis. Undergraduate student addresses look like: m.y.name@student.liverpool.ac.uk Taught postgraduate student addresses look like: m.y.name@liverpool.ac.uk If you share your initials and surname with another person then a number will be added after your surname, for example: j.smith2@student.liverpool.ac.uk You can find out more about by visiting our website at: liverpool.ac.uk/csd/ Get anytime, anywhere On your computer: webmail.liv.ac.uk On your phone or tablet: liverpool.ac.uk/csd/mobile

5 Get connected PC Centres, Wi-Fi and in Halls of Residence PC Centres There are over 2,800 computers in PC Centres across campus which you can use unless they have been booked for teaching. There are also over 250 laptops available for you to borrow and use in the University Library. PCs run the latest version of Microsoft Windows on the Managed Windows Service (MWS). The MWS provides a wide range of pre-installed software, including accessibility software, and a secure area which is regularly backed up that you should use to save your work (known as your M: drive). Wi-Fi You can connect your computer, mobile or tablet to the University s free Wi-Fi service, eduroam, to access the Internet and IT services. Wi-Fi is available in all Halls of Residence and many other areas of the University including cafés and bars. Get started by visiting wifi.liverpool.ac.uk Halls of Residence If you are in Halls of Residence you can also connect your computer or one of several supported games consoles to the network using the wired network point in your room. You cannot connect hubs or broadband routers to the network. Find an available PC on campus with our award-winning PC Finder tool: pcseats.liv.ac.uk

6 Stay safe Protect yourself and your data Before you arrive... If you wish to bring your own computer to the University, you can. We recommend that you bring a computer running Microsoft Windows but we will do our best to support whichever device you use. Make sure all of the devices you intend to bring have the latest updates and antivirus software installed if you don t have antivirus software you can download the University s antivirus software free of charge from antivirus.liv.ac.uk...and when you re connected We do all we can to protect you from threats to the security and privacy of your data whether you are connected through Wi-Fi or to a wired network point. There are also steps you can take to make sure you stay safe online. Find out more on our website at liverpool.ac.uk/csd/security Don t get caught out by viruses, spam and phishing attempts. 7 Print, photocopy, scan Make the most of our print service There are plenty of University printers available in PC Centres and the Library. They can also be used to photocopy and scan documents. You don t need to bring your own printer with you and you will not be able to connect a wireless printer to the University network. To use the print service you need to make sure that you have enough credit to cover the cost. Cost depends on the document size (e.g. A4/A3), the number of pages and whether you print or photocopy in colour or black and white. Credit can be purchased online at webcredit.liv.ac.uk and details of charges are available on our website at liverpool.ac.uk/csd/printing. You can scan documents free of charge and directly send scans to your University address or to your secure M: drive file space. Print Anywhere If you are working on your own computer, either on or off campus, you can also use Print Anywhere to send your work to a printer on campus you don t need to be using a computer in one of the PC Centres or one of the libraries. Remember to add credit to your print account at: webcredit.liv.ac.uk

8 Access anytime, anywhere Bring and use your own device Many of the IT services you can use on campus can also be accessed away from the University if you re connected to the Internet. You can: Check your using Webmail webmail.liv.ac.uk View your academic timetable and modules in Liverpool Life liverpool-life.liv.ac.uk Access the online learning environment, VITAL, at vital.liv.ac.uk or by using the Blackboard mobile app Run software without having to install it on your own device by using Apps Anywhere apps.liv.ac.uk Access files on your M: drive and sync files between devices, including mobiles, tablets and computers, using DatAnywhere datanywhere.liv.ac.uk Purchase print credit and check your balance webcredit.liv.ac.uk Download apps for your mobile or tablet from the University s App Store appstore.liv.ac.uk Most of these tools can be found via the Digital University which you can visit online at student.liverpool.ac.uk Install Microsoft Office for free on up to 5 devices (PC, Mac, tablet or phone): liverpool.ac.uk/csd/software

9 Liverpool Life The student portal The student portal Liverpool Life contains a wide range of useful information. Log in online at: liverpool-life.liv.ac.uk You can use Liverpool Life to: View and update your personal details Upload a photograph for your student ID card (tip: do this before you arrive on campus to avoid any delay with receiving your card) Check your academic profile (programme and modules) Access your academic timetable Request official documentation such as student status letters You will need your Student ID number and a PIN to access Liverpool Life: you will receive an telling you how to set your PIN. If you forget your PIN you can reset it. From the Liverpool Life home page, click on 'Reset your PIN' and you will receive an with a link to create a new one. During very busy periods, such as the start of term, it may take up to a full day for your new PIN to be activated. Do not try to reset your PIN again during this time as it will lead to a further delay.
