Thank you Pam Our grateful thanks to Pam Hamblin who has done a sterling job keeping members happy for many years maintaining our stock of consumables. 2 From the Tuition Manager. Greetings, A question that came up last week Why do I need two addresses caused me to think through a full response. I have a Vodafone and a Gmail account an account simply being an address and password. I use the Gmail on trial runs when it could be interesting but not too important; I have a password that normally goes with it. So, three years after I last looked at Cruise Critic I could go straight back. A more technical reason - the Internet is made of many parts such as the World Wide Web (WWW) where pages are linked and read with a browser, and electronic mail. The most complex of the parts is the system when linked with Internet providers. Space is required on the provider s system (their server) sufficient for all customers and the system has to receive and send users s. The providers systems have glitches; it is difficult to send to Xtra accounts on occasions; Vodafone NZ could not talk to btinternet (UK) for about 6 months. You might know of other examples. Gmail, Hotmail and others use the WWW for the link and appear to have a more robust system. Using them enables you to work round glitches. For convenience, it does pay to have a local client such as Windows Mail, Outlook (the app in Microsoft Office) or my latest free app of choice em Client. When using these, it is not necessary to go to individual web sites to see accounts, all accounts will come to the client. When you send an you can pick which system you wish to use. If you would like to work through the process of getting a Gmail or Hotmail account there will be the option on 25 August at Please call the office if you wish to attend. Perhaps it is the weather. Our class numbers are very Tutors Jim Air Judy Air Peter Ashley Rhonda Giles Liz Godfrey Rob Gordon Faith Grausch Barbara Heath David Helas Les Howe Shirley Nicholas Jim O Hara Bob Oldnall Linda Pinder Roy Pyle Dick Richards Allan Rouse Doug Turner If you are unable to attend a class please advise the office. 2

3 low at the moment. In discussing this in committee, a comment was made that members do not understand the difference between a Course and a Workshop. At the rate our numbers are dropping there is little difference at the moment; signing up to a course is the equivalent of signing up to four workshops. In the past a course has had the appearance of a formal exercise, following the book which has a list of clear outcomes tasks that the attendee should achieve. The workshops are informal, many being variations on How Do I For a course with only one or two people the formality goes out the door (if it was there before) each session focusing on what the members needs to know and do. Every attempt is made to have a Take Away for all our events, a page book for a course and 4 or 5 pages for a workshop. There is a good selection of courses for September. PowerPoint is offered, a great way for showing holiday slides. A start with spreadsheets a key to money management. Exploring the World Wide Web know your browser and your search engine. And how about Pimp my Docs instead of word processing. Smart phones, ipads, Image enhancement, getting used to Windows 10, all available for you to discover. My travels start before the next newsletter. As a trial, if you want to send me a message, type linoit into Google, click on Log In, use snetg and s1n2e3t4 to login. Click on the board Welcome to SeniorNet Glenfield. Drag a sticky (any colour) onto the board, leave a message and Post. Take care, Doug Turner I tried his and it worked. Ed. 5 Using Forums to Get Help and to Share Experiences I have tried to distil in the heading above, what forums on the internet have of value. I currently use seven forums, five photographic, one about computers and one about motorhomes. I don t view them all each day, just two of the photographic ones. Some I may go for months without looking them up. However, I have the security of knowing that I can probably get feedback on a great variety of problems relatively quickly, sometimes even the same day, if I need to. The main purpose of this article is to acquaint you with the PressF1 forum. This is the forum which is dedicated to problems with computers, other devices, operating systems, software and associated matters. PressF1 is run by the PC World magazine. It is very respectable and people with a wide range of expertise are members. Many are computer technicians and Geeks. Many members know very little and just need help. To take part you first of all need to become a member, which is free. You supply an address and some basic details. You can choose to use your own name or adopt a pseudonym. One of the most knowledgeable of the members is wainuitech, who, you have guessed it! a technician from wainuiomata. Like others he gives great feedback for free. It probably gives him an extra opportunity to keep up to date and he obviously enjoys sharing. My advice is not to wait until you have a problem before becoming a member or just viewing the forum. You can go online and have a look around now, when you will be classed as a guest. That way you can see what it offers, the queries that come up, the responses, repartee, and get an overview of the names and how they go about things. By doing this, you will be much more confident when the time comes to ask a question. It is worth mentioning that there seems to be a forum for everything. I did a test by going online and googling two widely different things. First Knitting there is a forum with recent posts on Cat sweater, button holes, baby booty confusion and many, many more! Second Karate - there are sub-forums on Chinese Martial Arts, Jui Jitsu, Kickboxing, Muay Thai and many more. So, in summary, do give forums a go. Do have a look at PressF1 and also google your special interests. It may open up a whole new world for you! Jim Air Jim s Tips Did you know that you can use your webcam - using only the microphone part to voice commands/queries on Google Chrome to do searches etc, without the need for using the keyboard? Particularly useful if you are a slow typist or you have any problems with your hands. 5
