3 New OS Versions New versions of the Windows and Mac operating systems Windows 10 (release date: July 29, 2015) Mac OS X El Capitan (release time: Fall 2015) When will ACO install and support these new OS versions? Planning will begin in Fall 2015/Winter 2016 Windows UW normally waits for SP1 to be released before supporting new versions Timeline for Windows 10 Service Pack 1 is unknown Mac Release date and stability of Mac OS X El Capitan not yet known ACO waits for the first.1 OS update before installing We recommend waiting to update your OS until the first update has been released and until ACO has had some hands-on experience with it and tested common applications 3

4 Windows 10 Windows 7/8 users can upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Main requirements: Must upgrade within one year of availability (by July 28, 2016) There must be 3GB of space for the download file What s not new? Very familiar and an easy transition from Windows 7/8 Start menu similar to Windows 7 (less like Windows 8) 4

5 Windows 10 What s new? - Starts quickly, and helps enable batteries to last longer - Does not require a touch screen - there are touch screen features for supported devices. - Windows 8+ apps can now be run in their own window (like Windows 7) - New version of Windows anti-virus: Windows Defender - Cortana: Similar to Siri, a personal digital assistant for your PC - Microsoft Edge: all-new browser that comes with Windows 10 - Allows you to write or type notes directly on webpages - Save your favorite reads for later - Read online articles free of distractions - Windows Store is coming! (apps, games, music, movies, and TV shows) - Windows 10 Features 5

6 Mac OS X El Capitan 1/2 New and improved features Spotlight Safari Able to recognize natural language (you can type a command/question into Spotlight as you would say it) Searches even more places to give you more useful results Lets you keep your favourite websites always open and updated pinned to left of top tool Split View If you are running several apps at once, you can automatically fill your screen with the apps you choose (instead of manually resizing and dragging) Mission Control Makes it easier to organize and see everything that is open on your Mac Places windows in the same relative location so you can spot the window you are looking for with more ease. 6

7 Mac OS X El Capitan 2/2 No official requirements have been published by Apple yet App improvements Metal Mail, Notes, Photos, Maps all have notable improvements New graphics core technology software included in El Capitan Gives apps and games direct access to Macs graphics processor Improves performance and graphical experience Performance Up to 1.4x faster app launch Up to 2x faster app switching Up to 2x faster display of first mail messages Up to 4x faster pdf opening in preview 7

17 Staffing update 1/2 Administrative Coordinator for the ACO We welcome Sherry Hartung, starting August 24 Barb Yantha has a new position in IST. We wish her all the best. Acting Associate Dean (Infrastructure & Technology) We welcome Jennifer Simpson (Drama & Speech Communication) Jennifer will be with us until July 2016, while Robert Park is on sabbatical Her many responsibilities include oversight of the new student space in HH and computing infrastructure and support in Arts 17

18 Staffing update 2/2 ACO is also in the process of hiring an IT support person to fill a vacant position Primary and secondary support person for some departments may be adjusted when this person is hired, to spread the load and match technical staff areas of expertise to departmental needs to the extent we can 18

19 Construction update (Hagey Hall) Over past week or so Preparation for removal and installation of mechanical and electrical August 5 (for approx. 2 weeks) Drywall work scheduled This week Work on the new door near HH 115 will begin When complete, the exterior exit door near HH 101 will be closed The internal door to the stairwell and the stairwell itself will remain accessible) 19

21 Remote applications for Arts courses What are remote applications? Looks like a regular icon but it connects to an application server Can be logged into from specific labs Students registered in the course can also log in from their own computers Instructions will be provided to students in the participating class Remote applications for specific Arts courses MS Access (AFM 341 course) TaxPrep (for an AFM course taught by Alan Macnaughton) 21

22 Online Course Evaluations Pilot An on-line course evaluations pilot is happening using evaluate, UWcreated software 52 Arts course sections participating this term -- select courses from ARBUS, ANTH, CLASS, DEI, ECON, FR, PHIL, PSYCH AHS, Math, and Science are also using this system Arts hopes to expand its use to other course sections in the Fall Goal to eventually move all course evaluations to a common online platform (university-level committee is working towards selecting) Department chairs and interested faculty/lecturers are being consulted in the process 22

23 Online Course Evaluations Response Rates Highest: 100% (2 sections of 1 course) Lowest: 14% (1 section of 1 course) Average: 56.7% Overall response rate: 47.1% Compared to paper evaluations from Spring 2014, there is no significant difference in response rate on average. 23
