TOOLS for SMART MINDS OVERVIEW idaq supports installation of additional components to extend capabilities and features of idaq itself. With additional components, new types of acquisition devices, new signals processing features, and other kinds of functionalities can be added to idaq. NI-XNET-CAN is a component for idaq that allows the acquisition from XNET CompactDAQ products using CAN interface. This guide explains how to install and use NI-XNET-CAN component. INTRODUCTION XNET-CAN is a component for idaq that acquires data from NI-XNET CompactDAQ products using CAN interface. With this component, signals acquired from XNET-CAN devices can be visualized, processed, and stored in the same way as signals acquired from DAQ-mx devices. XNET-CAN component has the following features: It automatically identifies and configures connected NI-XNET modules for CompactDAQ using CAN interface. Signals acquired from XNET-CAN devices are managed by idaq in the same way as DAQ-mx devices. It supports CANdb databases (.dbc,.ncd) and Fibex database (.xml) Editable baud rate. Editable sampling rate of acquired signals. No special skills are required to acquire data from XNET-CAN devices. Quick setup. 5
XNET-CAN idaq Component User Guide REQUIREMENTS This section contains the list of requirements that users should know before using XNET- CAN component for idaq. MINIMUM HAR DW AR E R EQ UIREMENT S Ensure that your computer fulfills the following hardware requirements: Dual core CPU or higher. 2 GB RAM (4 GB is strongly recommended). Display resolution 1024x768 or higher. 5 MB free space on disk required by XNET-CAN component for idaq. Mouse or other pointing device. MINIMUM SO FTW ARE REQ U IREMENT S Ensure that your computer fulfills the following software requirements: OS: Windows 7 or higher. idaq. You can download an evaluation copy of idaq at the following site: NI-XNET driver rel. 1.7 or higher. You can download it at the following site: 6
TOOLS for SMART MINDS INSTALLATION Before installing XNET-CAN component, you have to install and configure your NI-XNET CAN devices. Check your acquisition device with the National instruments software Measurement & Automation. After having done so, you can install XNET-CAN component. To install XNET-CAN Driver Component, run idaq, open Device & Sensors tab and click on Install button as indicated in figure below. FIGURE 1 - INSTALLING A NEW COMPONENT FOR IDAQ Browse your files in File Explorer and select the component file (XNET-CAN.zip). Once XNET-CAN file is selected, idaq will automatically install it. You can check if XNET-CAN component for idaq is installed on your computer, opening device Option dialog from Device & Sensors tab. As shown in the following figures, if the installation process has been successfully completed, XNET-CAN and XNET-CAN-Acquisition are listed among the installed components. If the installation process has not been successfully completed, an error will appear. 7
XNET-CAN idaq Component User Guide FIGURE 2 INSTALLING XNET CAN COMPONENT FOR IDAQ Once installation is completed, you can start to use your NI-XNET CAN devices. 8
TOOLS for SMART MINDS GETTING STARTED WITH XNET-CAN DEVICES This section explains how to add, configure and use an XNET-CAN device with idaq. ADDING AN XNET-CAN DEVICE TO THE LIST OF ACTIVE DEVICES To add a new XNET-CAN Device to the list of active devices, open the Device & Sensors tab from the idaq main window and select Add button, as shown in figure below. FIGURE 3 - ADDING A NEW XNET-CAN IN IDAQ A new dialog window shows the icons of available devices you can use in idaq to acquire data. The list of icon in your idaq installation may be different from the image below, according to the number of components you have installed. FIGURE 4 DEVICE TYPE SELECTION WINDOW 9
XNET-CAN idaq Component User Guide From this window, click on XNET-CAN Device icon and press OK button. The following window appears. FIGURE 5 - XNET-CAN DEVICE EDITOR XNET-CAN Device Editor shows the list of all available XNET devices using CAN interface. For each module, the following details are shown: Device name. It is the interface name defined in Measurement & Automation. Product type. Serial number. Slot number. Protocol. Configuration file path. It is the file path used by idaq to save device configuration data. To add an XNET-CAN device, highlights it and press OK button. It will be added to the list of active devices and the last-used device settings are loaded. To reset setting data of a specific device, highlight it and press Reset to default button (2). Configuration file will be replaced with a file with factory defaults. To refresh the list of XNET-CAN devices, press Refresh List (1). 10
TOOLS for SMART MINDS XNET-CAN CAPABILITIES When a new XNET-CAN device is selected, database file path, baud rate and other settings must be defined before starting acquisition. As shown in the following figure, to define settings of a XNET-CAN device, open Device & Sensors tab and click on the CameraLite Device in the list of active devices. FIGURE 6 XNET-CAN DEVICE EDITOR To edit CAN acquisition settings, click on the capability button XNET-CAN Analog Input. The following window shows the settings window for XNET-CAN analog input capability. 11
XNET-CAN idaq Component User Guide FIGURE 7 - EDITOR FOR XNET-CAN ANALOG INPUT XNET Analog input editor window contains the following elements. 1. Database file path. It is the database file path describing frames, signals, and ECUs of the CAN system. NI-XNET communicates with hardware products relying on an external database. For XNET device using CAN protocol, this database translates CAN frames to engineering-level signals and it is described within standardized files. 2. XNET signals list. It shows the list of XNET signals specified in the database. By default, no signal is selected. Only selected signals are acquired and managed by idaq. 3. Sampling rate. It specifies the sampling rate used to resample signals acquired from the XNET-CAN device. 4. Baud rate. It is the baud rate used for the XNET-CAN device. 5. Enable Termination. It enables/disables the onboard termination at the connector of the CAN interface. Termination is disabled by default. High-Speed CAN networks are typically terminated on the bus itself instead of within a node. However, this component allows you to configure termination within the node to simplify 12
TOOLS for SMART MINDS testing. If your bus already has the correct amount of termination, disable termination. If termination is enabled, termination value is set to 120 Ω. 6. Select all. 7. Select none. EDITING XNET-CAN CHANNEL PROPERTIES By default, XNET channel names correspond to the name specified in the DBC database. As shown in the following figure, to view and edit XNET-CAN channels properties, click on Channels button from the Device Editor Window. FIGURE 8 - OPENING CHANNEL EDITOR Channel list window contains the list of all the signals selected in the XNET-CAN Analog Input editor. Notice that, if no signal has been selected from XNET-CAN Analog Input editor, channel list in channel editor window will be empty. As shown in the following figure, to edit properties of a single XNET channel, highlight it on the channel list and click on Edit button. 13
XNET-CAN idaq Component User Guide FIGURE 9 - CHANNEL PROPERTIES EDITOR As shown in the channel properties editor, for each XNET channel, several details are editable: Description. It is the channel name. By default, the description field contains the signal name specified in the CAN database. Min and Max. They specify the channel range. Units. It is the unit of measurement of the channel. 14
