1 Installing Data Translation data acquisition devices in Vista The steps to installing drivers and data acquisition devices in the Vista 32 bit environment can be summarized as follows: A. Get the latest driver software. B. Install the latest driver software (must be done before attaching/installing the data acquisition device). C. Install the data acquisition device. D. Verify that the board is identified correctly in Vista. E. Verify that the board runs in Vista. Note that Vista 64 bit is not supported and that driver software must be installed before the DT data acquisition hardware. Get the latest driver software. All DT data acquisition devices ship with the Data Acquisition Omni CD. This cd contains all the necessary software you need to install, configure and use your data acquisition device. However, the latest software is always available from our website. To download the latest software from our website, please follow these steps: 1. Create a Temp directory on your system, typically on the C: drive. 2. Go to the Data Translation Omni CD download page at the following link, 3. Click on Omni CD Install. 4. Click on DT-Open Layers for.net. 5. In the File Download dialog, select Save and save the Setup.exe to the Temp directory created in Step 1. (Note: Do not click on/save the installs marked OEM Install. These setups are for specialized installations and will not install all the software that most users will need.)

2 Installing the latest driver software. These steps should be done while logged in as an Administrator or with a User account that has Administrator rights. You should turn off UAC control for that user. 1. Go to the Vista User Account screen for the current user and click on Turn User Account Control on or off. 2. Uncheck Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer and click OK.

3 3. To activate the settings you just made, reboot the system before continuing on with the next step. 4. Using Windows Explorer, browse to the Temp directory where you saved setup.exe.

4 5. Right click on setup.exe and tell it to Run as administrator. 6. You will see a dialog that says the publisher could not be verified. Click Run to install all the necessary files. During the install process there will be a couple dialog boxes where you need to agree/accept in order for the install to complete.

5 Installing the data acquisition device. The steps for installing a usb or pci data acquisition device are the same. The only difference is you need to power down the system before you install the pci board in an available pci slot in the pc. With a usb device, it can be attached to an available usb port as soon as the driver installation process above is complete. The following instructions/screen shots assume a pci device is in use. 1. When Vista detects the unknown data acquisition device, the Found New Hardware dialog should be displayed. Select Locate and install driver software (recommended). 2. When Vista can t verify the publisher of the driver software it will display a Windows Security dialog box. Select Install this driver software anyway.

6 3. After a brief period you should see a message that the device has been successfully installed. This will usually be accompanied by a couple system beeps as the driver software is loaded to the device.

7 Verify that the board is identified correctly in Vista. 1. To verify that the drivers were configured correctly, go the Vista Device Manager. Expand the DT- Open Layers Data Acquisition Devices entry by clicking the + sign. All installed DT data acquisition devices will be listed here. Your data acquisition device model number should be shown. Click on the board name to show its properties. 2. Go to Control Panel and set it for Classic View. You should see an Open Layers Control Panel icon. Click on it.

8 3. The Data Acquisition Control Panel will show all DT data acquisition devices that are currently installed on the system. From this screen you can change the name of the device as well as some Advanced settings for devices and drivers that support doing this.

9 Verify that the board is working correctly in Vista. 1. To verify that the data acquisition device is functioning correctly a free utility called Quick DataAcq will be used. This program is installed on the system as part of the driver install setup. 2. To start Quick DataAcq, go to Start -> Programs -> Data Translation, Inc -> DT-Open Layers for Win32 -> QuickDataAcq 3. After seeing an Intro dialog the program should load as shown below.

10 4. Use the Quick DataAcq Scope function by clicking on the 2 nd icon from the left in the menu bar. It is the one showing the sine wave. In the Board list box, click on the down arrow and select your device. This should make other settings in this window available. Click start and you should see whatever is connected to channel 0 of your data acquisition device. In the screen below, channel 0 was open when sampling was started. 5. Your DT data acquisition device is now ready for use in Vista.
