1 Avid Automation Ingest Applications Avid Automation Ingest Applications are cost-effective automation system tools that provide broadcasters, local stations, cable channels and similar operations with a streamlined solution for a broad range of ingesting tasks. With Autmation Ingest Applications it becomes very easy to manage and automate satellite feeds and other recordings, move media and metadata between cache servers and your video server, ingest third party material, digitize content, cache from videotape to server, and migrate finished content from Avid Interplay to on-air broadcast. Avid Automation Ingest Applications include the following: Intelli-Sat DDME DDMS Media Cacher Publish to FastBreak Tightly integrated with an Avid FastBreak 8000 system, Automation Ingest Applications let you seamlessly operate the station, helping you automatically organize daily ingest processes and frame-accurate recordings of content, therefore saving you time. Familiarize yourself with the Avid Automation Ingest Applications described in this guide to fully utilize the possibilities these products present to your station.

1 Avid Automation Ingest Applications Intelli-Sat Avid Intelli-Sat easily manages real-time recording of satellite and other incoming feeds. n n With Intelli-Sat, each department acquires its own material: News, Programming, and Promotion can independently schedule required feeds and rely on Intelli-Sat to carry out their directions. Intelli-Sat integrates tightly with other Avid Automation systems, so program information is entered into the media databases just once. With Intelli-Sat, you can record several feeds at the same time, adjust the position of a satellite dish, tune its receiver, switch the router, assign a device, and command it to record. In the event of a schedule conflict, Intelli-Sat identifies the nature of the conflict and directs the operator towards resolution. Intelli-Sat recorded programs reside in either the video server or tape inventory where you can trim or segment them and play them to air. Intelli-Sat also provides automation of the receivers and satellite dishes. Avid Intelli-Sat can record as many feeds on as many record channels as your video server provides. For example, if your AMS has four record channels, Intelli-Sat will record four feeds at the same time. For an Omneon video server the number of channels you can purchase is unlimited. Featuring a distributed control architecture, Intelli-Sat consists of two separate applications: the Schedule Manager and the Record Manager. The Schedule Manager application handles requests for feed recordings. Programming, Promotion, News, or other departments can order and manage their own recording requirements by entering information at their desks with up to 10 networked desktops licensed within the facility. Residing in Master Control, the Record Manager handles the actual recording process. For more information, see Intelli-Sat Recorder on page 95 and Intelli-Sat Scheduler on page 67. Managing the complex tasks at record time, Intelli-Sat s interface not only displays all active and upcoming record events, but will intelligently allocate resources as the recording schedule executes. Any errors or resource conflicts are highlighted, and if necessary, the on-duty operator can override the schedule or perform an ad-hoc recording. Device control is handled through Avid s network-based SIDON architecture. Intelli-Sat is even more powerful when integrated into a complete Avid FastBreak 8000 automation system. After a program is recorded via Intelli-Sat, the media record metadata is updated directly in the FastBreak 8000 media database, creating a finished recording ready to screen and prep. 20

Intelli-Sat Refer to the following Intelli-Sat System diagram to understand the corresponding broadcast framework: n For more information about Intelli-Sat, see Avid Intelli-Sat Workflow on page

1 Avid Automation Ingest Applications DDME DDME provides broadcasters with a significantly improved workflow by automatically enabling file-based media to be discovered and transferred under automation control. Now, even manual transfers can be executed with a simple "drag and drop." Increasingly, media content is being delivered to broadcasters in file format, instead of video feeds or tape. Users can easily identify delivered content, tag it with traffic metadata, transcode and copy it to their playback server. Previously, operators had to either decode and dub the media or use a more expensive transcoding scheme to ingest into their video server which is a costly process in terms of hardware, software and man-hours. The DDME solution can automate that routine, attaching the broadcast metadata to the media in the process, allowing broadcasters to create low-resolution proxies that can be monitored and used throughout their organization in a very cost-effective way. The user can preview the clip in low-res format with minimal resources, straight from the video server. Extending the functionality of DDMS, the Digital Delivery Management Engine (DDME) package includes a full copy of DDMS as well as a fully qualified server and a copy of Rhozet Carbon Coder. Digital transfer functionality is maximized with Carbon Coder handling both the delivery and playback formats. 22

DDME Refer to the following DDME diagram to understand the corresponding broadcast framework: n For more information about DDME, see Checklist: Before You Begin on page

1 Avid Automation Ingest Applications DDMS Avid DDMS provides an easy-to-use application to manage the movement of media and metadata between cache servers deployed at stations and the Avid media database. The DDMS presents a windowed view of the available cache material alongside the server database and provides a "drag and drop" method of executing the file transfer to the video server. DDMS uses DDME to communicate between source, transcoder, and destination. DDMS is compatible with Flip Factory from Telestream, Carbon Coder from Rhozet and the transcoding service from MassTech. DDMS integrates tightly with the Pathfire delivery service. Working with both their Automation Connect and Server Connect software, DDMS recognizes material on the Pathfire DMG Cache and registers the descriptive metadata. If the media is needed for airplay, DDMS will initiate the transfer to the video server, attaching the facility house number. The metadata is interpreted and the details are transcribed into the FastBreak automation database. Sub-clipping, barter spot and break information is coded into the database with native house numbering. DDMS integrates with the transcoder built in to the Pathfire system. Working with Pitch Blue s native delivery tools to recognize media and metadata on the cache, DDMS works with the transcoding service included with the Pitch Blue cache server for SD material, and Flip Factory from Telestream as well as Carbon Coder from Rhozet for HD material. When FastBreak indicates that the media is needed, DDMS will initiate and monitor the transfer to the video server. The metadata is interpreted and details are transcribed into the automation database. All sub-clipping, barter and break information is coded into the automation database with native house numbering. Managing the movement of media from various commercial cache servers, DDMS is fully compliant with the workflow defined in both legacy and contemporary DG systems Spot Box cache servers. It works seamlessly with the built-in Server and Automation Connect services in their latest systems. Other spot delivery systems are supported. Depending on the capabilities of the cache, automated and drag and drop functionality can be executed. Contact your Avid broadcast account manager for details. DDMS and DDME are ideally poised to capitalize on the rapidly-escalating growth of non-realtime commercial and program delivery. 24

DDMS Refer to the following DDMS diagram to understand the corresponding broadcast framework: n For more information about DDMS, see Avid DDMS Settings on page

1 Avid Automation Ingest Applications Media Cacher Avid Media Cacher is a tool that efficiently and automatically converts content from tape to the video server. The Media Cacher program controls any number of VTRs and server encoder ports to create frame-accurate digitized content. Media Cacher s automated process greatly reduces the workload involved in transferring material to the video server. Avid Media Cacher is a program that works with an Avid Automation system to efficiently and automatically convert content from tape to the video server. The program controls any number of VTRs and server encoder ports to create frame-accurate digitized content. Media Cacher greatly reduces the workload involved in transferring material to the server and completely automates the process. The main functions of the Media Cacher application includes the following: Transferring tape-based media to the server. Controlling multiple tape-transports and server encoders. Reading and ingesting to video server from physical tape. Transfering the Start of Message (SOM) and End of Message (EOM) to the SpotInfo table from the Tape Inventory table. Saving show segments with in and out times and subclips with SOM and EOM. Controling the VTRs via SIDON Gateway. Working with multiple devices. Including a Search tool to find specific tapes. Using a changeable color scheme. When you segment a tape, the metadata is stored in the database. You can air the content directly from the tape or cache it to the server. From the on-screen tape library, you can drag and drop the elements to cache. When you drop an element in the cache list, more than one encoder may be available. Multiple encoders means faster ingesting. As server encoder ports and tape machines become available, Media Cacher automatically cues the VTR and accurately transfers material to the server. Saving substantial time and effort, Avid Media Cacher transfers large quantities of tape-based content from shelf to server. Since most broadcast facilities have transitioned to a fully file-based workflow, shelf space is limited and many organizations have more content than can be stored. Media Cacher facilitates transfer to digital storage and free up valuable storage space. 26

Media Cacher Media Cacher utilizes the SIDON control system to operate any number of videotape machines, routers and video server ports to transfer content. It also migrates the metadata that describes the tape assets to the digital file database. Transfers can happen simultaneously, limited only by the available number of tape decks and server ports. Significantly easing the workload of facilities with a large tape library, the Avid Media Prep interface works directly with Avid Media Cacherto request tape elements to be cached to the server as they appear in the traffic log. Media Prep and Media Cacher will interact in the background to cache material on an as-needed basis. Refer to the following Media Cacher system diagram to understand the corresponding broadcast framework: n Media Cacher can be configured to operate either as an integrated component of an Avid FastBreak 8000 automation system, or in stand-alone mode as a critical part of a large archiving project. For more information about Media Cacher, see Avid Media Cacher Requirements on page

1 Avid Automation Ingest Applications Publish to FastBreak Avid Publish to FastBreak seamlessly moves finished content from an Interplay-linked editing system to a broadcast facility s play-to-air server with Avid s Interplay-based application. This ingest application help you eliminate dubbing from Avid editing systems while leveraging the metadata from both systems. Publish to FastBreak serves as an addition to any Avid FastBreak automation system, incorporating functions of Avid Interplay and its Media Services Engine, as well as Avid ProEncode using the Telestream or Agility Anystream transcode engines. The Publish to FastBreak application consists of two components: Interplay Media Service, allowing the editor to assign the piece for transfer. An automation application, managing metadata attachment and transfer execution. Publish to FastBreak eliminates the need to render finished projects out to videotape, then manually dub those tapes to the transmission server. The Editor can assign a broadcast house-id or provide a brief description into the Interplay data fields when content is complete. To initiate the transfer workflow, the Editor selects Publish to FastBreak from the Interplay Media Services menu. Intermediately rendering the content, Publish to FastBreak places the metadata into the Interplay Media Services Engine. The automation application detects the presence of new content and tries to match the house-id to a placeholder in the automation database. When a match is found, it executes the final transcode via the ProEncode service to the transmission server. If a match is not found, it lists the content and description for a Master Control Operator to manually match. The Operator can then drag-and-drop the media record to begin the transcode. Enhancing video quality while reducing the processing time needed to go from idea to on-air, the Publisht to FastBreak workflow increases speed by eliminating the manual process. 28

2 Avid Intelli-Sat Workflow Avid Intelli-Sat is a user-friendly satellite recording solution that is extremely flexible and powerful. It can operate as a standalone platform, but also integrates smoothly into other Avid Automation systems. Your Intelli-Sat system has two software applications that work together to schedule and record your feeds unattended. The Scheduler and the Recorder combine to create a total system that can be integrated with other Avid applications. Intelli-Sat lets your facility grow. You can easily add additional recording devices or expand into larger Avid Automation systems as the need requires. For example, your system might include Avid Automation Archive Manager. With Automation Archive Manager, you can assign a group name when making the schedule so Intelli-Sat deletes the clip from the server and deletes the archived copy as well. After the satellite feed finishes recording, it sends an update command to Automation Archive Manager to auto-archive the newly ingested clip. c The Avid system you use is designed to make your job much easier. The complex structure of Avid software uses a large part of the computer's resources to maintain the timing, speed, and accuracy required for television broadcast. The hardware and software in Avid computers is the best available. Avid stands behind all its products with confidence. However, if these products are compromised in any way by installing other programs on these computers, confidence in the system s integrity disappears. Placing non-avid programs on these computers exposes the system to serious, unsupported dangers. Any unauthorized use of Avid hardware automatically defaults any warranty or service plan. Do not install or run non-avid programs on the Avid computers. Each computer in your Avid Intelli-Sat system handles specific tasks for operating external devices and various applications. Depending on your configuration and options, several types of computers may control your system: Intelli-Sat Computer SIDON Gateway Computer SQL Server

2 Avid Intelli-Sat Workflow Intelli-Sat Computer n The Intelli-Sat computer in a standard setup includes the Scheduler and Recorder applications. These applications do the following: Working with CompuSat to control receivers that SIDON cannot control by itself. Receiving and performing event tasks such as recording satellite events. See Intelli-Sat Scheduler on page 67 and Intelli-Sat Recorder on page 95 for more details on Scheduler and Recorder. SIDON Gateway Computer The SIDON Gateway computer controls devices, which play very important role during the Intelli-Sat setup: VTRs Server Channels Routers Receivers SQL Server The SQL Server computer houses the main library using Microsoft SQL You can update the Intelli-Sat database by running a single SQL script: All updates Scripts for Version 4 DB.sql. 32

3 Installing and Configuring Avid Intelli-Sat When your new Intelli-Sat system arrives, get it ready to set up and install with the help of a Avid Field Engineer. Avid can provide assistance with pre-install drawings and telephone support to get your system connected. By the time the field engineer arrives, you should have your system prepared. At the very least, have the Intelli-Sat computer installed in the racks with workstations, connections, hardware, and monitoring already set up. You can also expect training with your new system. This chapter contains the following main sections: Checklist: Before You Begin Checklist: Intelli-Sat Installation Unpacking the Equipment Racking the Computers Making the Initial Cable Runs and Connections Initializing Devices via SIDON Gateway Setting Up Configuration Tables Configuring Satellites, Antennas and Receivers

3 Installing and Configuring Avid Intelli-Sat Checklist: Before You Begin This section helps you prepare your Intelli-Sat system for regular use. Avid encourages all staff who work with Avid products attend the corresponding training sessions to get the best optimum results from the applications. Before you start to install software and configure the Intelli-Sat, ensure the following tasks are completed. Tasks Refer to... Choose Intelli-Sat configuration. Intelli-Sat Configuration on page 34. Expand your system configuration. Expanding Your System Configuration on page 35. Connect timecode. Connecting Timecode on page 36. n Only a qualified network administrator should change the IP addresses in your system. For help with IP address configuration, contact Avid. Intelli-Sat Configuration Depending on you facility, Intelli-Sat can include a simple scheduling tool or a comprehensive solution to manage Dish/Receiver control, signal routing, and recording. Intelli-Sat has three available configurations: Scheduling only Scheduling and Recording (including router control) Dish and Receiver control (full package) These configurations are available as a standalone package or as part of a Avid Automation system. Avid also offers a PBS edition designed to meet the unique needs of the Public Television community. A standard layout begins with a rack-mounted computer running Avid applications. This computer can operate receivers and dish controllers through the satellite controller software. If your facility has a CompuSat dish/receiver control system, Intelli-Sat can communicate with it. 34

Checklist: Before You Begin n Daily operations take place from the Scheduler and the Recorder workstations. You can access these two parts of Intelli-Sat from the same workstation. Recorder normally resides on the Intelli-Sat computer and provides device control via SIDON Gateway, Avid's unique device controller. You can operate Scheduler anywhere on the station LAN (Local Area Network). If necessary, your operation can contain up to 10 Scheduler workstations. This configuration lets managers and traffic department schedule recordings from their desktops. If your master control operators need easy access to the Scheduler software, Scheduler can run in the operations area. The standard Intelli-Sat workstation consists of a monitor, mouse, and keyboard. The monitor is not included with your Avid system, letting customers choose their preferred type, style, and size. Avid recommends you use the largest monitor available to make it easy to see interface details and displayed data. Carefully plan the location of the Intelli-Sat or other computers to allow easy and proper cable runs for all peripheral connections. Avid has expert staff available to help you plan your configuration. See Checklist: Intelli-Sat Installation on page 36 for details on configuration. For more information on system configuration and planning, contact Avid. Expanding Your System Configuration Intelli-Sat can operate as a standalone system to catch feeds and record them to your desired media. However, the most popular configuration of a station includes a full Avid Automation system with Intelli-Sat. This combination provides unmatched utility and flexibility in master control automation as well as automated satellite program recording. Avid broadcast automation packages can increase your efficiency and revenue. An automation system can control the master control switcher including transitions and key functions, the video server, 35

3 Installing and Configuring Avid Intelli-Sat n VTRs, and other devices. These machines ultimately connect to your traffic log in Avid s custom automation interface. Combine Avid Automation with the nearly hands-free features of Intelli-Sat and you have state-of-the-art functionality in broadcast automation. Whatever you need and choose, carefully plan your operation concept before installing and configuring your system. Connecting Timecode c All Avid computers connect to your house clock through the NTP server. They rely on the SMPTE timecode signal to keep their clocks in proper sync. If the signal is lost, the timecode might disconnect. The user must ensure that the timecode is always up and running. To connect timecode: 1. Ensure that your house clock is properly supplying the time to the NTP server. 2. Ensure that the client software on each Avid computer is properly reading the incoming signal. The computer s time must be accurate to on-air programming time. Checklist: Intelli-Sat Installation After completing the tasks described above, you are ready to begin the installation of Intelli-Sat on your system. However, the Intelli-Sat setup includes the following six steps: Tasks Refer to.. Unpack the equipment. Unpacking the Equipment on page 37. Rack the computers. Racking the Computers on page 38. 37 Unpacking the Equipment Unpacking the Equipment When your Intelli-Sat equipment arrives, carefully unpack the boxes and retain all packing materials and boxes. Check the contents of each shipping container against the packing list and notify Avid immediately if something is missing or damaged. You can save valuable time by installing the equipment and running the cables before the field engineer arrives on site. To prepare the equipment: t Implement the tasks described in the following table: Tasks Refer to... Reseat the boards. Reseating the Boards on page 37. Initial test the computers. Initial Testing of Computers on page 38. Reseating the Boards Before you install the CPUs in the racks, check the components and ensure nothing inside the computer came loose. Sometimes shipping causes components like the board to loosen and you need to reseat the boards in the computer. w w If you are uncomfortable with this process, you should wait for the Avid Field Engineer. Tell the field engineer whether you have or have not completed this process. Avoid interfering with any dipswitch settings on any of the boards. Some of these switches are very close to the edge of the boards; pay careful attention while handling them. To reseat the boards in the computer: 1. Ensure the device is disconnected from the power source. 2. Carefully remove the top cover screws, slide the top cover rearward, and lift to remove. 3. Very carefully, remove upper board support bracket screws. Ensure you remove any screws if one or two drop into the main chassis. 4. Remove the slot seating screws that hold each of the vertically mounted boards in place, near the rear of the CPU. Again, ensure no screws drop into the main chassis. 5. Lightly grasping only the edges of the board, carefully rock each board up and down in its socket to reseat the contacts. Be careful not to twist or side-load the boards, this can cause damage to the circuits. 37

3 Installing and Configuring Avid Intelli-Sat 6. After each board was reseated, simply install the screws on the back of each board with light pressure. 7. Reinstall the upper board support bracket. 8. Reinstall the CPU case cover. Initial Testing of Computers Before you set up the computers in their final configuration, make sure they are working properly. This test determines whether the computer powers-up properly before the systems are placed in the racks. To test the computer before final racking: 1. Connect the mouse, keyboard, monitor, and computer. 2. Ensure the power is turned off to the computer and monitor. 3. Connect the power cords to the monitor and computer. 4. Turn the monitor and computer on. 5. Wait for Windows to load. 6. Look for the Windows desktop display to appear. 7. Determine if the mouse is working by moving the mouse pointer around on the screen. 8. Test the keyboard by pressing the Caps Lock and the Windows keys. 9. Turn off the monitor and computer, disconnect the cables, and install the system according to your design plan. 10. Report any problems to Avid at once. Racking the Computers n Each Avid computer comes equipped with rack-mounting brackets and requires three rack units. Securely fasten the computers to the rack with the appropriate hardware ensuring the computers have enough breathing space. If necessary, you can place the computers on a worktable instead of in a rack. The computer has rubber feet to absorb vibration and provide circulation around the unit. Wherever you install your computer make sure to leave at least five inches in the back for cables. The last part of racking the computers is to designate places for the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Avid strongly recommends you connect the computers to an uninterrupted power source (UPS) and, at the least, a surge-protector. 38

Making the Initial Cable Runs and Connections To rack the computers: 1. Get someone to help you hold the computer while aligning it in the rack and setting the first screws. You should not attempt to do this by yourself. 2. Install screws in the bottom of the mounting brackets first. This helps support the weight as you attach the computer to the rack. 3. After all the screws are installed, tighten them securely. After racking the Avid computers, you are ready to connect the cables before you can begin initializing the system. Making the Initial Cable Runs and Connections w In this part of the installation, you hook up all of your serial, audio, video, network, power, and GPI connections. Refer to the drawings provided by either your engineer or Avid. This section covers the serial, GPI, and TCP/IP network connections. Remember that your Avid Intelli-Sat system does not process audio or video; it only provides serial control to the devices you connect. Before you begin cabling, disconnect the power from all relevant devices. To make initial cable runs and connections: t Implement the following tasks: Tasks Refer to... Use the system drawing. Using the System Drawing on page 39. Make the serial connections. Making the Serial Connections on page 40. Connect the network. Connecting the Network on page 42. Using the System Drawing Your Intelli-Sat system is configured for your specific needs, so Avid provides a customized drawing of your installation to assist you in quickly and correctly making the connections. A typical system connects the computers and station devices with standard serial cables. The computers also connect with CAT 5 network cable. As mentioned earlier, you should have a good plan for the physical layout of the system. Your plan should take into account operator ergonomics, workflow, component placement, and cable run requirements. When you construct your cables, refer to your customized system drawing as well as pin-out and connector diagrams. 39

3 Installing and Configuring Avid Intelli-Sat Refer to the following drawing as an example of a general system layout. Avid can help you design the complete system according to specific needs of your station. Making the Serial Connections In an Avid system, SIDON Gateway can handle a large number of tasks, but it is limited by the number of device ports available. You can include several SIDON Gateway computers in the system to increase the number of available ports. Since every system is customized, in some installations the SIDON Gateway computer might run other Avid programs. 40

4 Intelli-Sat Scheduler Intelli-Sat Scheduler organizes your feeds. The satellite recording process begins with Scheduler. To set up Scheduler, you need your satellite feed information and a few minutes to program the system. Scheduler's wizard quickly and easily guides you through each step of building a recording schedule. The wizard is similar to other Windows applications which have a step-by-step process that prompts you to enter required information. In the wizard, you can enter backup recording or refeed information. This allows quick rescheduling of missed feeds or changes in programming. The Scheduler program handles requests for satellite feed recordings. It is licensed for up to 10 networked desktops in your facility. This lets Programming, Promotion, News, and other departments manage their own recording by entering information directly into Scheduler. The scheduling process includes several options that let you record recurring programs. These programs are called daily episodics. You only need to enter daily episodics once. Scheduler creates the schedule every week based on your original entries. n Make sure you have completed system initialization before using Scheduler. For Scheduler to operate properly, the following tables must be complete: SIDON SIDON Gateway Devices Antennas Receivers See Installing and Configuring Avid Intelli-Sat on page 33 for details on configuring the system tables. 99 Recorder Operations Recorder Color Coding The main screen in Recorder uses several colors to indicate current recording operations. This functionality lets remote scheduling terminals view current system record status. Color Dark blue Dark green Lime green Gray Maroon Red Event Status The currently selected event. The event is recording. The event is queued for recording. The event has completed recording. The event has been cancelled. The event failed or timed out because of an error. n The event colors in Recorder are identical to those in Scheduler. Recorder Operations After initial configuration, setting up a satellite recording is fairly automatic and needs only minimal intervention. After the satellite recording schedule is completed in Scheduler, you mostly have to monitor the system and load videotapes, as required. Unless you need to make changes in the recording schedule for the current day, you can let Recorder do its job. The selected recording media determines the procedures for making a satellite recording. If the recording is made to a video server, no operator intervention is required. If the recording is made to videotape, the operator needs to identify the tape to the database and insert the tape into the VTR. You can load tapes anytime before the start time of the recording as soon as it appears in the scheduled events window in Recorder. n The event appears in the Queued Items window a set time before recording. The Time Left counts down to the start and end of the recording. The background color of the event changes to indicate the change in status. If your setup includes a Dish Movement Time, the scheduled time on the main screen differs from the original recording schedule by the specified amount of time. The Time Left countdown in the Queued Items window can also be different from the start time to support the Pre-Record Time settings. See Setting Up Configuration Tables on page 48 to ensure proper functioning of the Intelli-Sat application. 99

5 Intelli-Sat Recorder The Intelli-Sat Recorder operations include the following: Recording to the Server Recording to a VTR Recording to Other Destinations Cancelling a Recording Overriding Recordings in Progress Displaying Buttons and Commands Maintaining Connection to SIDON and the Satellite Controller Viewing and Clearing Warnings Exiting Recorder Recording to the Server n Sending your satellite programs to server is the easiest function of Intelli-Sat Recorder. A program set in Scheduler to record to server needs almost no human intervention. The moment recording begins, the router switches the specified receiver output to the selected recording device and starts the server encoder. The event is available in the SQL database immediately after the recording begins. The recording continues for the time specified in the duration field. When the recording is complete, the status indicates the event is complete. Always make sure that no two programs have the same name and the ID is unique. When recording to server, Avid strongly recommends you use the Quick Add dialog box. 100

Recorder Operations To record to the server: 1. Open Scheduler and select Action > Quick Add Schedule. The Quick Add dialog box opens. 2. Refer to the following table to fill in the event s information: Option Program ID Title Duration Start Time Description The unique ID of the program that will be stored on server. The descriptive title of the program recorded. The total duration of the video. ASAP - Recording starts immediately. Timecode - The operator can indicate a specific time for start of recording. Use for Source Feed Receiver - If selected, Intelli-Sat uses receivers for source feed. Cross Point n Cross Point - If selected Intelli-Sat uses crosspoints for source feed. From the drop-down list, select the source. The Cross Point drop-list is available only if crosspoints were selected for source feeds. 101

5 Intelli-Sat Recorder Option Satellite Transponder Receiver Device Type Device Name Don t send to Satellite Controller Don t calculate Dish Movement Time Description From the drop-down list, select the satellite from which you will record the feed. From the drop-down list, select the transponder for recording the feed. From the drop-down list, select the receiver. Select the device recording the feed; for example, if you record to server, select SRV. From the drop-down list, select the specific device name to record the feed; for example, if you record to server 2, select SRV 2. Select the option if you do not want to processe information through Satellite Controller. Select the option if you do not need to calculate the time of dish movement. c The servers, as well as other devices you wan to record to, should be properly configured in the Devices Setting window to correctly perform recordings in your Intelli-Sat system. 3. Click the Record button, shown at left. The recording starts immediately, if the ASAP option has been selected in the Quick Add dialog box. Recording to a VTR Recording satellite programs to tape is similar to recording them to a server. The difference is that you have to insert a tape into the VTR machine. Each tape in a recording day needs to have a unique tape number. This lets the automation system recognize the tape for segmenting or playing to air. Set up a tape numbering system to manage your tape numbers. The system can be anything from a simple note pad to high-tech solutions, like the optional bar code system. Remember that no programs in your station can have the same name and IDs must be unique. To record to a VTR: 1. Open Scheduler and select Action > Schedule Add Wizard. 2. Fill in all necessary recording information in the Schedule Add Wizard windows. 102

Recorder Operations Click the Next button in the Schedule Add Wizard to go to the next information window of your scheduled recording. When choosing the destination, select VTR from the Destination drop-down list. 3. Click OK. The recording will start at the specified time. Recording to Other Destinations The process for recording to a destination other than server or tape is also simple. If you ve selected the alternate destination in Scheduler and everything is working properly, you should not need to do anything but monitor Recorder. n To record to another destination: t Select the device from the Destination drop-down list in either Quick Add or Schedule Add Wizard. With Intelli-Sat, you can trigger multiple switch commands and recordings simultaneously with one button. See Overriding Recordings in Progress on page 104 for details. Cancelling a Recording Not every scheduled event will need to be recorded. Intelli-Sat lets you easily remove a scheduled event from the day s list of events to record. To cancel a recording: 1. Select the program you wish to cancel. 2. Click Action > Cancel feed. A confirmation dialog box displays. n 3. Click the Yes button to cancel the recording. The background color changes to indicate a canceled event. See Recorder Color Coding on page 99 for more information on colors. 103

5 Intelli-Sat Recorder Overriding Recordings in Progress n You can also use a new override recording feature, which takes precedent over any programs In-Progress or Queued. Override Recordings does not follow pre- and post-record times, and the user can assign only one DDR to one override recording device at a time. This is an intentional feature to ensure that the override function works correctly. To enable the Overriding Recording functionality, run the OverrideRec.sql script on the Intelli-Sat database. The Override Recording button might be hidden; for details on showing hidden menu buttons see Displaying Buttons and Commands on page 106. To override in-progress recordings: 1. Select Settings > Cross Points > Source tab. 2. Customize the override information in the Source tab to set the crosspoint as the recording s source. Refer to the following table for the options that are required for a valid override. Option Name Router X Point Override Recording Device Description The name of the crosspoint. The router connected to the crosspoint. The crosspoint number. The device that implements the new recording. If you do not know the exact device, Avid recommends you use any DDR available in your system. Override Channel n The four-character identifier that when combined with the date and time of the recording, becomes that clip s ID. Override items use a naming convention of Override Channel Name_Date_Time, for example, WFAA_090709_

Recorder Operations Option Enable the Override Rec. Description This option must be checked for the device and program to appear in the feeds recorded. 3. Select Action > Override Recording > Start Recordings. n The Override Recording button lets the user trigger multiple switch commands and recordings simultaneously. When the recording stops, the Start Recordings button and command appear dimmed. And when you start the recording, the Stop Recordings button and command appear dimmed. After the recording starts, the previously scheduled recordings status changes to Cancelled in Scheduled Events. This status change also appears in the Intelli-Sat Scheduler application. 105

5 Intelli-Sat Recorder Displaying Buttons and Commands n The Override Recording button and commands might be hidden. It is possible to display them on the main Intelli-Sat interface for the user s convenience. See Shortcuts and Buttons on page 207 for more details on Avid Intelli-Sat buttons. 150 8 Working with DDMS Avid DDMS Settings c The DDMS settings described in this section are provided for use by Avid Project Engineers during initial installation and set up. Do not modify these settings without Avid supervision. n See the latest DDMS ReadMe available online at Avid s Knowledge Base for details on compatibility with the DDMS application. Refer to the following table for the DDMS Settings configuration: Setting Connection Setup Description Lets the user to manage server connections and configure connection settings. n Database See Configuring DDMS on page 135 for more details on configuring connection settings. Lets the user configure the location of the DDMS Database. Enter the names of the server and database, and the user s name and password to login to the DDMS Database, as described below: Server Name - The main Avid server running Microsoft SQL software and hosting Avid and DDMS databases. Database Name - The DDMS database name. There are exceptions to that if multiple instances of DDMS and DDME are needed in a particular site i.e. DDMS1, DDMS2. User Name - User name for DDMS application to access tables from DDMS database. Password - The DDMS application password. The Database settings are configured for DDMS application login to the DDMS database for background process, not for individual operator authentication rights. For Individual operator authentication rights another login window opens when application is started. 150

Avid DDMS Settings Setting Subclipping General FlexEvents BXF Settings Description Allows the user to configure the way automatic subclipping is performed when a transferred program contains more than one segment. Refer to the following options to configure automatic subclipping: Segment Detail - Select this option to process barter content either separately (as its own segment) or with the previous or subsequent segment. Segment Options - Treats fee spots as segment. When this option is selected, fee spots become their own segment. If the option is not selected, fee spots are processed with the previous or subsequent segment. Subclip Options - Specifies the naming convention for subclipping. Options include appending a letter or number, either with or without a preceeding dash ( - ). You can choose Alpha or numeric subclip naming convention. For example, master clip SUN can have subclips as SUNA, SUNB, or it can be numeric as SUN1, SUN2. In General tab, you can configure the following options: Automatic Transfer Settings - You can activate automatic transfer and the time interval in which DDMS checks for matches. Server Settings - Configures the number of servers in the system. The value should correspond to number of locations in Spotinfo. Spot Modification Rule - When selected, determines if title and comment data is preserved from the cache metadata over to the spotinfo record in the database. If deselected, the title and comment metadata imported from traffic is preserved. If a clip is played weekly with the same ID (house number), and it has an InventoryFlexEvent attached to it, when the previously played event is deleted and replaced with new contents. Select the appropriate option to disable or enable automatic FlexEvents: Yes - FlexEvent will be attached to new content. No - FlexEvent will not be attached to new contents. If the Monitor for messages option is selected, all metadata updates as result of DDMS operations will be sent to traffic department s database via BXF protocol. 151

8 Working with DDMS Setting Transfer/Archieve Description Allows DDMS to send commands to Data Mover and Automation Archive Manager using the options described below: Enable deletion from server(s) - Deletes the contents delivered from Cache server to Play to Air server, if the content already existed. Use this option for clips that are new contents every week but their IDs (house numbers) stay the same. IP Addresss of Data Mover - Indicates the Data Mover IP address. Enable deletion from archive(s) - Deletes the contents delivered from Cache server to Play to Air server from Archive if existed and new content is archived (or will automatically be archived, depending on the components of the whole FastBreak 8000 system). Enable XCommands - Enables XCommands for site with multiple archive systems and specific archives assigned to specific play to air servers. If these settings are properly enabled, after you right-click a clip in the Master Clips area the Delete clip from server(s) and archive(s) option becomes available in the context menu. DDMS Workflow After the initial set up process is complete, the user can start operating the simple and effective DDMS application. Although each station has its own unique way of handling DDMS, a general DDMS workflow is as follows: 1. The data entry system places the metadata in the Avid Spotinfo database. 2. The Master file is placed in a NAS repository or Cache Server. 3. DDMS compares the Spotinfo database and NAS repository to match the ISCI field with the file name. 4. When DDMS finds a match, it initiates the transfer from the NAS or Cache server to the video server. In the process, DDMS updates the Title and Comment fields, if that option is deselected. 5. Operators can initiate manual transfer by dragging items over redlined item, or by right-clicking on an item and selecting Transfer. 6. After transfer via DDMS is complete, Server Mapping Tool updates required information such as clip start, end, and duration for FTP\UNC transfers. 152

DDMS Interface n DG, Pathfire and Masstech supply this information without SMT. 7. Newly ingested material is reviewed by Transmission before going to air. DDMS Interface This section introduces the elements visible in the DDMS interface. Knowledge of these details helps the user greatly increase the workflow efficiency. The Confirm dialog box opens. 3. Click the Yes button. 163

8 Working with DDMS Automatically Transferring Elements You can set up automatic transfers of elements using the DDMS application. When properly configured, this setting allows DDMS to automatically match the ID field in the Cache Server Inventory to the ISCI column (in the Avid database Spotinfo table) for an item marked Not on Disk (red-lined). If there is an exact match, the transcoder and transfer of that item is initiated without manual interaction. To ensure efficient automatic transfer of elements, the user must implement the following procedures before initiating an auto transfer process: Tasks Refer to... Enable Auto Transfer for DDMS Destinations. Enable Auto Transfer for DDMS Specific Connection. Verify that the item transferred is not disabled. To enable automatic transfers for destinations: on page 164. To enable auto transfer for specific connections: on page 165. Verifying the Item Status on page 166. c If auto-transfer is not enabled on both the general and connection levels, DDMS will not automatically transfer the clips from that source. 166 8 Working with DDMS Verifying the Item Status After automatic transfer is enabled, the user should also check the status of the transferred item. For the automatic transfer to work, the items must not be disabled. However, if there is a transfer conflict, the transferred item can be disabled by the system automatically. The system identifies auto transfer conflicts when the Do not process automatic transfer with conflict option is selected in Connection Setup. n To ensure correct auto transfers, you must select the option called Do not process automatic transfer with a conflict. 166

DDMS Basics For example, if a station has SD and HD destinations for one Pathfire, an operator performing a manual transfer might name an SD clip SD_SUN and an HD clip HD_SUN. Auto transfer cannot create a name for a clip like the user can, so the clip is placed in the Disabled table within the Auto Transfer List. The Auto Transfer List helps you verify the item status. It can display auto-transfer items as well as items that do not transfer automatically. To view status of auto transferred items: 1. Click the Automatic Transfer icon in the DDMS main screen, shown at left. The Auto Transfer List window opens. n 2. Select the item type from the Display only drop-down list. a. Select the Enabled Items option to view auto-transfer items. b. (Optional) Select the Disabled Items option to view items that do not transfer automatically. 3. Select the Spot ID column header to enable transfer status. 4. When fininshed, click the Close button. Disabled items do not transfer automatically. You can still move these elements manually, but the system will not auto-transfer them. 167

8 Working with DDMS Disabling Automatic Transfers You can disable automatic transfer anytime it is no longer needed. To disable automatic transfers: t Deselect the Auto transfer option on both destination and connection levels. 177 9 Avid Media Cacher Workflow This chapter contains the following main sections: Avid Media Cacher Requirements Media Cacher Terminology Media Cacher and Media Prep Media Cacher and Segmenter Media Cacher and DDMS

9 Avid Media Cacher Workflow Avid Media Cacher Requirements In order for Media Cacher to function properly, the following requirements must be met: A different Media Cacher database for each machine with a different name for each executable file. For example, on a Media Prep computer, the program might be named MediaCacherPrep. Each tape must be pre-segmented. Each tape segment has the Start of Message (SOM) and End of Message (EOM) set. Access to the Avid Automation database. Access to the AutoInventory, SpotInfo, and TapeInfo tables. Hardware, such as video servers and VTRs. Connection to at least one SIDON Server. Versions 3.0 and later require SIDON Gateway v Media Cacher Terminology In order to use Media Cacher you should familiarize yourself with the following concepts: Server offset delay time The number of frames it takes to get video server to respond and play. Padding How much earlier and later to record. 178

Media Cacher and Media Prep Media Cacher and Media Prep In an Avid Automation system, Media Cacher interfaces directly with Media Prep to save tape elements to the server as the traffic log calls for them. Media Prep and Media Cacher interact in the background to cache material on an as-needed basis. This significantly eases the workload of stations with a large tape library. n For details on the Media Prep application, see the Media Prep chapter in the Avid FastBreak Setup and User s Guide. 179

9 Avid Media Cacher Workflow Media Cacher and Segmenter You can still use Media Cacher without Media Prep, but you must have Segmenter to segment the video and a contract for Avid professional services to manage the metadata database. n For more information on Segmenter, see the FastBreak 8000 Setup and User s Guide. Media Cacher and DDMS n At the same time that you are caching from tape with Media Cacher, you can also generate a low-resolution version of the clip using the Digital Delivery Management System. This lets you preview the clip in low-res format, using minimal resources, straight from the video server. For more information, see the Working with DDMS on page

10 Media Cacher Interface In the Media Cacher interface, you see several types of information to help you monitor and control ingesting tapes to the video server. Each part of the interface serves a specific function or displays specific information helpful for ingesting tapes to the video server. This chapter introduces the Media Cacher application s interface elements. The Media Cacher main screen contains various menus and buttons. Familiarize yourself with Media Cacher screen elements and functions for a smoother workflow. The Media Cacher interface consists of several elements described in this chapter: Menu Bar Toolbar Tape Inventory Segments Caching Table

Segments to Cache Table The Segments to Cache table displays the tapes you plan to move to the video server. 184 You can drag and drop subclips or entire tapes into the Segments to Cache table.

Slider n When you move multiple segments to the Segments to Cache table, Media Cacher asks whether you want the segment saved by subclips or as one item. If you select only one subclip, Media Cacher creates separate files in the video server for each subclip. If you select a whole tape to cache, Media Cacher creates one file in the video server. This creates a database entry for the entire tape and an entry for each program on the tape, but appears as a single file in the video server. For more information on caching elements to a video server, see Caching to the Video Server on page 204. Refer to the following table for a description of columns available in the Segments to Cache table. In the Publish to FastBreak Setup dialog box, verify that the connection settings for the DMS and Asset entries are accurate and up-to-date. For more information, see step 6 on page 226 of Installing Avid Publish to FastBreak. 228

Finalizing the Publish to FastBreak Configuration Locator and Segmentation Locators are markers to signify the start and end of a segment within an Avid editor, such as News Cutter XP. The locators settings are available in the Publish to FastBreak settings. To modify the start and end locator keywords: 1. In the Publish to FastBreak menu, select Options > Settings. 2. In the Settings window, click the Publish to FastBreak tab. 3. In the General Settings area, change the Locator Start Words and the Locator End Words. 229

13 Setting Up Avid Publish to FastBreak 4. Select the value for Maximum Simultaneous Transfer. Maximum Simultaneous Transfer signifies that a queue will be used when the number of transfers exceeds this value. 5. Click Save. Automated Transcode Destinations If the Automated Transcode feature is enabled, the TAPEID specified within an editing application will be automatically detected and matched with the existing House ID. At this point the transfer automatically takes place matching up the House ID with the Avid Program ID (TAPEID). Destinations are entries that specify where the final destination of transfers should reside on the video server. They are available for modification in the Settings window, on the Publish to FastBreak tab. After the transfer is finished, the asset is located on the destination server the user has selected. And Publish to FastBreak polls for new assets that are published to FastBreak. For example, if we enter oem-5fum6n2925q in the Host Address field, Dev in the Path field, OMNEON in the Host Type field, and MPEG2-12MBit in the Transcode Setting field on the Publish to FastBreak tab of the Settings window, Publish to FastBreak will specify the transfer to the \\oem-5fum6n2925q\dev location using MPEG2-12Mbit as the transcode setting. Logging into Publish to FastBreak After you successfully implement the procedures described in Installing Avid Publish to FastBreak on page 223, the Publish to FastBreak icon appears on your desktop so you can log into the application. To log in to Publish to FastBreak: 1. Click the Publish to FastBreak icon, shown at left. The Login dialog box opens. 230

Logging into Publish to FastBreak 2. Enter the user name and the password. The Avid Publish to FastBreak main window opens. The Publish to FastBreak application is available for daily operation of your station. 231
