1 Windows 10 In-Place Upgrade Guide Version 1.0 What is happening? All Windows PCs at the University are being updated to Windows 10. This is so that the University can make use of the latest features and applications provided by Microsoft and other providers. Windows 10 also provides stronger protection from the increasing number of cyber security threats than previous Windows versions. Additionally, we are moving files and folders saved on your University individual workspace to Microsoft OneDrive For Business. This will allow easy access to your documents from a greater range of devices and comes with 5TB of storage. What will happen to my PC and what I have on it? Prior to the day that your PC is due to be migrated your PC will have been checked remotely for any software or hardware that won t work with Windows 10. If there is something that needs changing, IT Services or your local IT support will have contacted you about this. However, if there is anything on your PC that you would like us to specifically check please let your local IT support or IT Services know. Only applications that are known not to work with Windows 10 will be removed during upgrade. All other software will remain installed and should continue to work as before. All of the files and folders that are in your Documents folder will be moved to OneDrive For Business, as will your Internet Explorer Favourites. This may have happened already. All other documents that you have saved to your PC (for example on your Desktop) will not be touched, meaning you will still have them after your PC has upgraded. How do I start the upgrade? As the upgrade can take a couple of hours, we recommend starting it at the end of the working day and leave it running overnight. If you are upgrading a laptop this will mean leaving it plugged in at work. You will not be able to work on your PC while the upgrade takes place. If your computer is scheduled to be upgraded on the same night as your files are moved to OneDrive, your individual workspace will become read-only at 5PM that day. This is therefore a good time to start upgrading your PC! Please upgrade your PC on the day that has been agreed with/requested by your IT support or departmental co-ordinator. This will ensure the smoothest transition to the new services for you, and your local IT support will be on-hand to provide support for your migration at this time if you need it. To run the upgrade, please do the following. Should you require any assistance, please contact your local IT support or the IT Service Desk: 1. If your PC is a laptop: a) Ensure that it is connected to the mains power.

2 b) If the laptop is connected via a docking station or port replicator (including docking stations that are connected via USB or mounted on your monitor), unplug the network cable (which in most cases will be grey and will look like the picture below) from the docking station and plug it into the laptop directly. If this is not physically possible, remove the laptop from the dock so that the network cable can be connected. It is not possible to complete the upgrade process through the wireless network. A typical network cable 2. Close any documents or applications that you have open. 3. Launch Software Center. There should be a shortcut to this on your desktop; if there isn t then it can be launched from the Start Menu instead. 4. Select Operating Systems. 5. Select the option Windows 10 <version number> In-Place Upgrade (vx.x). Click Install to begin the upgrade process. If your PC has already cached the upgrade files, a progress bar will appear and the upgrade will begin. Otherwise, Software Center will show the download progress of the upgrade files and automatically start the upgrade once the files have been cached.

3 6. That s it! The upgrade will now continue. Leave the PC on and the upgrade should complete within a couple of hours. If you are starting the upgrade at the end of the day, you can leave it to continue at this stage (we recommend locking your screen by pressing the Windows key and L for security though). 7. The upgrade will proceed automatically and reboot several times.

Once the process has completed the Windows 10 login screen (which will ask you to press Ctrl, Alt and Delete to unlock the screen) will be displayed. a) If your PC is a laptop, the new McAfee encryption clients will begin installation in the background at this stage. My upgrade has completed, now what do I do? Please see the Windows 10 First Login Guide for information on what to expect when you use your upgraded PC for the first time.

5 As soon as I try to start the upgrade, it tells me that it failed. What do I do? Reboot your PC. Once the restart is done it may take a few minutes for Software Center to become accessible. Once it is, try running the upgrade again. This type of failure can happen for a number of reasons; the most common cause is that the PC has not been rebooted in a while, or that an update has installed that requires a reboot to complete. Restarting the PC should therefore resolve the problem. If the problem persists please contact your IT support team as described below. How do I get help if I need it? Your local IT support will be aware of when you are due to upgrade and will be on standby to assist you at this time.
