1 Local CAN Troubleshooting Local CAN starts with the main Control/Master module and its breakout cable (see image below). From there it connects to the rest of the secondary modules on the Local CAN. The Local CAN cables consist of 5 wires: Red (Power) Black (Ground) Green (CAN low) Yellow (CAN high) Blue (Index) Red & black are responsible for power to the modules on Local CAN; green and yellow are responsible for CAN communication; and Blue is responsible for ordering/identifying the modules. With a SureDrive and/or Individual Row Down Force system, when the modules on the Local CANBUS are booted up the system will go through prioritized "checks" to make sure all modules are communicating. Checks 1. System checks for the number of modules communicating. If an issue is encountered during this check, an error message similar to the image below will be displayed on Resolution: First inspect the Row Control Modules lights; if they are OFF proceed with Power Troubleshooting, if they are ON but some are amber in color proceed with CAN Communication Troubleshooting. 2. System indexes modules left to right. Local CAN Troubleshooting 1

2 If an issue is encountered during this check, an error message similar to the image below will be displayed on Resolution: Proceed with the Index Troubleshooting section. 3. System checks for correct amount of standard and split rows. If an issue is encountered during this check, an error message similar to the image below will be displayed on Resolution: Proceed with Row Count Mismatch Troubleshooting section Power Troubleshooting There is a 12 volt supply on the power/ground coming from the Control/Master module. If there is no voltage getting to the modules on the Local BUS, the module lights will be OFF. Power is required for the module to power ON. Local CAN Troubleshooting 2

3 Resolution Steps Test for 12 volts on Local CAN connections on Control/Master module breakout cable. With Planter Control and Row Control Modules (SureDrives), this voltage is supplied from the vehicle battery, not the Generator. If some modules are powered ON and others are OFF, inspect cabling around problem area. If one module does not power ON, and 12 volts is verified to the module, move module to a known working location on the Local BUS to verify its failure. CAN Communication Troubleshooting If there is a CAN communication error with the modules on the Local BUS, this will likely be represented by a yellow/amber light (see image below). CAN light may also be red if there is no communication. Resolution Steps If all modules have a CAN error, verify Local CAN terminators are installed and are in the correct location. Terminator at the start (Row #1) of the Local CAN; and Terminator at the end (last Row) of the Local CAN. If some modules have a CAN error, inspect cabling around the problem area. If the power light is blinking yellow/amber, this may indicate the module is stuck in upgrade mode. See - Row Control Module Power Light Blinking Yellow. Swap module and/or cabling to different areas of the Local CAN to verify any component failures. Index Troubleshooting If there is an issue with the index (blue) wire on the Local CAN, this may be represented by an operating configuration error (see image below). The indexing (ordering) of the modules on the Local CAN starts when the display is powered ON; and the process starts where terminator is installed. Example: With a SureDrive system installed on a 8 row planter, the indexing process starts are Row #1 and will move left to right indicating to each Row Control Module which row number each is installed on. 4 Resolution Steps Note: During the indexing process, the Row Control Module power light will flash red as each one is indexed. This occurs very quickly left to right across the planter. If there is an indexing issue, the indexing process will continuoulsy start over. (See example image above) If the configuration error shows "Indexed 7 of 8," this indicates that only the first 7 Row Control Modules have been identified. Inspect cabling for damage/pinch of the blue wire between rows 7 and 8. Row Control Module(s) not indexing will not flash red on the power light. Look for the last Row Control Module(s) that has a power light that flashes red (according to the example image, it would be row 7). If configuration error indicates "Indexed 0 of #," verify Local CAN terminators ( , ) are installed in their correct location and are not damaged. Terminator at the start (Row #1) of the Local CAN; and Terminator at the end (last Row) of the Local CAN. Swap module and/or cabling to different areas of the Local CAN to verify any component failures. Row Count Mismatch Troubleshooting When there is an issue identifying standard (rear) vs. split (interplant) rows on a split row planter the Operating Configuration Selection screen will display a Row Count Mismatch error. Example: With a SureDrive system installed on a 16/31 split row planter, the 15 split (interplant) Row Control Modules will identify as such AFTER ALL modules are indexed. Resolution Steps (See example image above) If the configuration error shows "Found 17 standard, 14 split" this indicates that all rows have indexed, but a split (interplant) row did not identify correctly and is reporting as a standard (rear) row. Row Control Modules will identify as a standard or interplant based on the Row Control Module CAN stub on each row (Standard = PN ; Interplant = PN ). Verify the CAN stubs are installed on the corrects rows. Local CAN Troubleshooting 4

5 Verify each Interplant CAN stub has its red "loop" or "jumper" wire intact. See - RCM Cabling - Interplant Rows vs. Standard Rows. Swap module and/or cabling to different areas of the Local CAN to verify any component failures.
