1 THE BRITISH SCHOOL OF KUWAIT HOW TO SET-UP YOUR IPAD MINI FOR USE IN BSK Before you begin please check that you have everything that you need in order to proceed: ipad Mini Charger (this may by 2-pin or 3-pin) Charging/ syncing cable (white cable with USB connector at one end) Wireless Network to which you can connect the ipad Mini Step 1. Step 2. Charge your ipad Mini using the cable and the charger supplied. Leave it charging while you continue with the rest of the set-up If you cannot see the screen shown on the right press the button at the bottom of the device. Slide the button to the right in the direction of the arrow. OR 1

2 BSK is a British curriculum school and your ipad Mini is intended to support your child s learning. Therefore we request that you set your ipad Mini up with British English and United Kingdom settings. Step 3. If your ipad Mini is already set to be in English please leave it in English. If your ipad Mini is not set to be in English then press on the little black arrow. Step 4. If your ipad Mini is not set to English already the Select English from the list of languages. Then press on the blue arrow at the top right of the screen. Step 5. If your ipad Mini is not set to United Kingdom then press on Show More From the list of countries select United Kingdom You are now going to connect your ipad Mini to a Wireless network. 2

3 Step 6. If you are setting up at home then you will see your home wireless network listed. Select your network from the list of available networks. Step 7. If your home wireless network has a password then you will have to type the password. Step 8. A tick next to your home wireless network means that your ipad Mini is connected. Press on the Next button at the top right. If your device came with a SIM card inserted then we suggest that you remove it using the SIM tray ejection tool which should be found in the box. You can use a small paper clip if you do not have a SIMS tray tool. 3

4 Step 9. In this guide we are assuming that you do not have a SIM card in your ipad Mini. Press the Continue button at the top right of the screen. Step 10. Your ipad Mini will contact Apple to activate. Wait until activation has finished. The next step involves a decision that relates to your privacy Step 11. We recommend that you leave Location Services enabled, as it will allow geotagging of photos etc. However you can choose to turn it off if you wish. Check that location services are enabled and then press on the Next button at the top right. 4

5 Step 12. BSK suggests that you set your ipad Mini up as a new ipad. Make sure that the option Set Up as a new ipad is ticked. Press the Next button at the top right. Your ipad will need to be connected to an Apple ID before you can download the Apps that your child will need. Step 13. You can use an existing Apple ID or create a new one. In this example we will create a new Apple ID for this ipad Mini. Press the Create free Apple ID button. If you chose to use an existing Apple ID then give the username and password of the Apple ID you wish to use. Now skip ahead to Step 21 5

6 Step 14. Please use your own birthday do not use your child s birthday. Set the birthday using the selectors at the bottom of the screen. Then press on the Next button at the top right of the screen. Step 15. Do you want to use an address that you already use or would you like to create a new address for your apple ID? In this guide we will assume that you are going to use an address you already use. Press on Use your current address Then press the Next button at the top right. Step 16. Enter your address then press the Next button. 6

7 Step 17. You must create a password for your Apple ID. This is not the password you use for your login unless you choose to use the same password. Type your password once. Then type your password again. Then press on the Next button at the top right. Step 18. If you forget or lose your Apple ID details then you can recover them using your security questions. You must choose 3 questions and give the answers. Once you have chosen and answered all 3 questions the next button will turn blue. Press the next button to continue. Your rescue address should not have been used for any other Apple ID else your ipad will link to the other Apple ID. Step 19. If you forget the details that you used for your Apple ID then you can provide another where Apple can send you your Apple ID information. Enter a different address than the one used to create the Apple ID Press the Next button to continue. 7

8 Step 20. Choose if you wish to receive s from Apple. These will be sent to the you used to create your apple ID. Once you have chosen press the Next button. Step 21. You should read the Apple Terms and Conditions. You can click on the arrows for details of each different part. If you do not agree with the terms and conditions then you cannot use the ipad Mini. If you do agree then press the Agree button at the bottom right. Step 22. Confirm that you agree by pressing the Agree button. Step 23. Wait while your Apple ID is created 8

9 Step 24. icloud is a service provided by Apple. It allows you to save data from the ipad to a secure location on the Internet. You get a small amount of free storage but you have to pay if you want more. In this guide we will assume that you will use the free icloud offer. Press on Use icloud and the next button will turn blue. Then press Next In the next step you have to make a decision that might incur a cost Step 25. icloud can be used to backup your entire ipad Mini. This will use up the free icloud offer very quickly. If you choose to backup to icloud it will result in you having to pay for more icloud storage. In this guide we will assume that you will backup your ipad by plugging it into a computer which has itunes installed. Choose whether to use icloud or a computer for backups. Then press the Next button. 9

10 Step 26. Find my ipad is a service from Apple that allows you to see where the ipad is if you lose it. In this guide we will assume that you will use Find my ipad Press on Use find my ipad The next button will turn blue. Press on the Next button to continue. Step 27. Step 28. You may be prompted for the accounts that you wish to use with Facetime press on the accounts to remove ticks from the ones you do not want to use. Press on Use Siri The Next button will turn blue. Then press the Next button. The next step involves a decision that relates to your privacy Step 29. You can choose to send reports to Apple about how you use your ipad etc. Press the option that you have chosen. The Next button button will turn blue. Press the Next button to continue. 10

11 The next step involves a decision that relates to your privacy Step 30. Choose whether to register your ipad Mini with Apple. This means that Apple will associate this device uniquely with your account details. After making your choice the Next button will turn blue. Press the Next button to continue. Step 31. Press the Start Using ipad button. Step

12 Upgrading to ios 7 Your ipan Mini comes installed with ios 6. You should update your device to ios 7 so that your child can take advantage of the new features offered by ios 7. Free word processing app Pages Free spreadsheet app Numbers Free presentation app Keynote Free film making app imovie Free photo app iphoto Music Creation Garage Band Depending upon the download speed of the update this process may take over 30 minutes to complete. You can find a link to the update guide on the VLE or optionally go to: Optionally securing your ipad Mini Your ipad Mini is intended to improve the learning that takes place within school (and even outside of school). Obviously it is possible to install Apps that are not educational and will detract from the use of the ipad Mini as a learning tool. As a parent you may wish to ensure that your ipad Mini is used as intended and does not become a distraction for your child. To enable you to do this Apple ipads have series of settings known as Restrictions.
