1 Quick Reference Guide Syncing Your ipad to a Desktop Computer This user guide covers the process for syncing your ipad with itunes on your desktop computer or laptop. Syncing allows you to transfer files between your ipad and your computer as well as create a backup of your ipad. It is recommended that you sync your ipad on a regular basis. For a more detailed user guide, view Apple s ipad 2 user guide: Syncing Your ipad the First Time BEFORE YOU START: Ensure you have the latest version of itunes installed on your computer by going to Have your CSU Fullerton itunes account username and password (given to you when you received your ipad device) available. Step 1: Turn on your PC or Mac and open itunes. Step 2: Connect one end of the Dock Connector to USB cable to your ipad; connect the USB end of the cable to your PC or Mac. It may take several minutes for the ipad to show up in itunes the first time you connect the ipad to your computer. Step 2a: If your ipad is locked, you will receive an error message (see screenshot to the right). To continue, type in your security passcode on the ipad and then click Try Again in itunes. 2 Step 2b: You may receive this message that your ipad is synced with another itunes library. Click Transfer Purchases to continue. This will save all of the apps that you currently have on your ipad, including gifted apps. Step 2c: You will need to authorize your computer for the purchased apps on your ipad. Type in your CSUF itunes account username and password. Click Authorize. Step 2d: The status window will show your items transferring to your computer. This process may take several minutes. 3 Step 3: Once your first sync has completed, you will want to review the sync settings for each of the tabs at the top of the ipad syncing screen. These settings determine what files are stored on your ipad. You may change these settings any time you sync your ipad with your computer. Step 3a: After clicking on a tab, place a check mark next to the option to sync that media type. In the example on the right, placing a check mark next to Sync Books would allow you to put e-books on your ipad. Step 3b: You may see an information message similar to the one at right when you choose to sync an item. Click the Sync option to continue. Last Revised: 05/05/11 Page 3 of 6

4 Step 3c: Next, select the option to sync all media of that type or only the selected items. In the example at right, all e-books could be synced by selecting All books. Or only selected e-books could be synced by selecting Selected books. Step 3d: When you modify any of the sync settings, you will see new options at the bottom right of the sync screen. Click Apply to sync your ipad with itunes using the new settings. Click Revert to undo the changes you made to the settings. Step 4: Once the sync is complete, you will see a message in the status window indicating that it is complete. 5 Syncing Your ipad After Initial Setup Step 1: Open itunes and connect your ipad to your computer via the Dock Connector USB cable. Step 2: Typically your ipad will immediately start syncing with your computer. This may take several minutes. Step 2a: If you have set up your ipad so it does not automatically sync with your computer, click the Sync button to start the sync.
