Overview Previously known as VMware Infrastructure 3, VMware vsphere is a distributed software system with features enabled by a management server and hypervisor working together. VMware vsphere 4.0 delivers new levels of performance and scalability, for running workloads in a virtualized environment: Expanded support for up to 64 cores per server Expanded support for up to 1 TB of physical memory per server Expanded support for up to 255 GB of RAM per virtual machine Expanded support for up to 320 virtual machines per server The System x3950 is the reference platform for vsphere scalability. New vsphere 4.0 offerings help meet the needs of Small/Medium Business (SMB), Mid-Market (MM), as well as Large Enterprise. vsphere Essentials editions (bundles) for SMB/MM businesses and Large Enterprise Distributed enterprises (such as branch offices). 2 vsphere Standard edition at a new, lower price point for simple consolidation. vsphere Advanced for high availability at a midrange price point helping provide consolidation plus availability. vsphere Enterprise Plus at a new top price point providing tools to help with consolidation, availability, and manageability. After this announcement, several offerings will be withdrawn from sales: VMware Foundation will no longer be available. New customers have the option to purchase VMware Standard Edition which has more function than Foundation, VMware Essentials, or VMware Essentials Plus. VMware Enterprise will be available for a short transition period. After that period, the customer has the option to move to either VMware Enterprise Plus or VMware Advanced. The new vsphere 4.0 offerings combine many of the previously available individual offerings into the new Essentials, Standard, Advanced, and Enterprise Plus Editions.
