ESX Server 3i versus ESX Server 3 Both ESX Server and ESX Server 3i support the entire suite of VMware Infrastructure 3 products, features and solutions, and you can use ESX Server 3 and ESX Server 3i side-by-side in your virtual infrastructure. Both provide industry-leading performance and scalability; the difference resides in the architecture and the operational management of ESX Server 3i. Management functionality By removing the Service Console, ESX Server 3i completes an ongoing trend of migrating management functionality from this local command line interface to remote management tools. The table below provides a side-by-side comparison of management approaches taken by ESX Server and ESX Server 3i. ESX Server 3 uses the Service Console for: Executing custom scripts Hardware monitoring agents Backup or management agents ESX Server 3i leverages: Remote Command Line Interface (Remote CLI) Industry-standard monitoring protocols such as agent-free management through CIM ISV solutions that leverage standard interfaces, the VI API and VMware Consolidated Backup Operating system compatibility The very small 32 MB footprint of 3i resulted in the elimination of the Service Console present in ESX Server 3. This leads to differences in the functionality of IBM Director and other tools when between working with ESX 3.5 and with ESX Server 3i. Without a console system, there is no OS in which to run a management agent at the hypervisor level. Management of a 3i system is accomplished with a robust set of standards-based management capabilities. In addition to eliminating installation steps and simplifying configuration, ESX Server 3i provides agent-free, standards based monitoring of hardware resources through the Common Information Model (CIM). You can also use the integrated remote command line interface (CLI) for storage, network, and host configuration, as well as for maintenance, patches and updates. ESX Server 3i is available embedded to VMware ELA customers in Configure To Order models only. Product positioning The ease of use of VMware ESX Server 3i will provide a very simple on ramp to customers who are new to or evaluating virtualization. Meanwhile, existing VMware users in the mid-market and enterprise will also benefit from the architecture of ESX Server 3i as it will provide a platform that is OS-independent and, with its 32 MB footprint, will provide better security, reliability, and manageability than any alternative. While ESX Server 3i is available as a standalone product, these customers will typically deploy ESX Server 3i as one component of the full VMware Infrastructure 3 Enterprise suite as they require the full capabilities offered by VMotion, DRS, and HA beyond just the core partitioning capabilities of ESX Server 3i. 5 same enhancements, such as 256 GB memory support and 64 GB guest OS memory support. The only exception is a set of networking enhancements configured in the Service Console (Refer to VMware KB for more information). As mentioned in the ESX Server versus ESX Server 3i section, because of the systems management tools and capabilities that today run in the service console, some customers will continue to use ESX Server until the migration of Systems Management tools and ESX Server until the migration of Systems Management tools and capabilities have been completed. Customers can choose to purchase ESX Server 3i either a standalone product or as one component of a VMware Infrastructure Foundation, Standard, or Enterprise software suite. Customers may also upgrade in the future from an ESX Server 3i license to a VMware Infrastructure license. The two architectural choices of ESX Server and ESX Server 3i may co-exist in the data center with server hosts running each. Hosts running ESX Server 3i and ESX Server can participate in the same DRS, VMotion, and HA cluster (HA is experimental with ESX Server 3i V3.5.0). Customers will need to be running VC 2.5 or later as ESX Server 3i is not supported by earlier versions.
