To tur o the system: 1. Make sure all devices are properly plugged ito a surge protector or wall outlet. 2. Make sure the moitors are properly positioed: Bi moitor to the left ad Edit moitor to the right. 3. If you have the optioal Avid PCI Exteder, make sure it is tured o. 4. Make sure the Meridie I/O box ad all drives are tured o. 5. Tur o the system. If your system boots properly, cotiue with Cofigurig the Avid System o page 58 to cofigure your moitors. Cofigurig the Avid System Avid systems come with a Edit moitor ad a Bi moitor. These systems have a specific cofiguratio for the moitors to prevet the Macitosh desktop from coflictig with the Edit moitor. You eed to make sure the Bi ad Edit moitors are set up correctly. Avid Xpress systems come with oly a Edit moitor, ad you ca purchase a Bi moitor as a optio. These systems have a specific cofiguratio for the moitors to make sure the Macitosh desktop appears o the Edit moitor. If you also coected a computer moitor, you eed to make sure both it ad the Edit moitor are set up correctly ad are set to the same resolutio. 58

Cofigurig the Avid System If your Avid system comes with two moitors, begi with Settig Up the Edit Moitor o page 59, ad cotiue with Settig Up the Bi Moitor o page 61. c Settig Up the Edit Moitor If your Avid system comes with a sigle moitor, begi with Settig Up the Bi Moitor o page 61, ad cotiue with Istallig the Avid Software o page 63. Do ot cofigure the moitors o the Avid system while the Media Composer, Film Composer, or Avid Xpress software is ruig. To cofigure the Edit moitor: 1. If the moitor positios o the widow are reversed from their physical positios, click oe of the moitors ad drag it to the correct positio. 4. Click the Meu bar ad drag it to the Bi moitor, if it is ot already there (see Figure 26). This places the startup scree o the Bi moitor. 5. Click the Close butto. 62

Istallig USB Device Software Istallig USB Device Software You must istall the USB device software prior to istallig ad executig the Avid software. Locate the istructios that shipped with the USB devices ad istall the software at this time. See the release otes that are specific to your system for details o software istallatio. Istallig the Avid Software Ruig the Diagostics After cofigurig your moitors ad istallig USB device software, you are ready to istall the Avid software. To istall the software, use the applicatio CD-ROM that shipped with your system. Oce you istall the software, you ca ru Avid System Test Pro to test the Meridie I/O board set ad the Meridie I/O box. You ca also ru System Maager to test Avid storage devices. These applicatios use the drivers from the Avid software. Avid diagostics, Avid System Test Pro, is a set of utilities that test the peripheral boards i the Avid system. The diagostics are i the Applicatios/Utilities/AvidSystemTest directory o your system drive. Whe you double-click the Avid System Test Pro ico, a widow opes that allows you to select Board Diagostics to test the peripheral boards ad ay attached daughter boards. Appedix B explais how to ru board diagostics. You ca also obtai Help to ru board diagostics by selectig Help > type of Help. 63

Chapter 3 Turig O the System Diagostic Utilities There are two other major software utilities available: Storage Maager allows you to: - Select ad create partitios. - Create striped groups. - Erase partitios. - Perform hard drive surface tests. The Storage Maager applicatio ad iformatio o usig Storage Maager ca be foud i the Applicatios/Utilities/AvidStorageMaager directory o your system drive. You ca also fid Storage Maager o the Avid olie Kowledge Ceter at DiskWarrior specializes i elimiatig directory errors by allowig you to rebuild your disk directory usig the data recovered from the origial directory. By doig this you ca recover files ad folders that you thought were lost. Your disk must be a Mac OS Stadard (HFS) or Mac OS Exteded (HFS Plus) disk. Avid ships the DiskWarrior CD-ROM that cotais the applicatio ad the maual that explais how to use the DiskWarrior software. You should always check the release otes that ship with your system to see if there have bee ay updates that relate to the diagostic utility guides. Drive stripig ad resolutios iformatio ca be foud o the Avid olie Kowledge Ceter at 64

Chapter 4 Coectig Audio ad Video Equipmet This chapter describes how to coect audio ad video equipmet to the audio ad video boards i the Avid system. Cofiguratios ca be a simple sigle-deck cofiguratio or multiple-deck cofiguratios with mixers ad a audio iterface. This chapter cotais the followig sectios: Video Decks Cofiguratio Notes Idetifyig Audio ad Video Boards Meridie I/O Box Coectors Meridie I/O Box Idicators Coectig a Cliet Moitor Sychroizig Audio ad Video Equipmet Cotrollig a Video Deck Coectig Audio Equipmet Coectig the Video Iput/Output Board to Decks Coectig a Video Server

Chapter 4 Coectig Audio ad Video Equipmet Video Decks The Avid system supports video decks from a umber of differet maufacturers. These decks ca be cotrolled directly by the system as explaied i this chapter. Cofiguratio Notes The followig sectios describe how to coect the audio, video, ad cotrol cablig that might be ecessary to cotrol your video deck. You should select the sectios that are appropriate for your system ad compoets. The followig list provides some geeral cofiguratio otes that apply to may of the cofiguratios covered i this guide: You ca have oly oe audio iterface board i the Meridie I/O box at oe time. If you are ot usig the passthrough feature o your video deck to pass the video sigal to other devices, make sure you termiate the passthrough coectio with a 75- termiator. This might be doe with a switch you eed to tur o, or you might eed to istall 75- termiators o the ope passthrough coectors. If you are usig speakers without iteral audio amplifiers, you will eed to coect a exteral audio amplifier betwee the audio source ad the speakers. The figures i this guide depictig the rear paels of the decks are sample illustratios; the coectors o your deck might be i differet locatios. Check the maual that came with your deck for the correct coector ames, locatios, ad fuctios. 66
