3 LOGGING IN TO QUIA 1. Enter int the Address bar f yur Web brwser (e.g., Internet Explrer) and then press the Enter key. 2. At the hme page fr Quia, click n the wrds Instructr Zne. Tip 3. Under the wrds Quick Lg In, enter yur Username and Passwrd and then click n the G buttn. Entry f the Username and Passwrd is nt case sensitive. Yu d nt need t wrry abut upper case and lwer case letters. 4. Once yu lg in as an instructr, yu can use the tabs under the welcme line t navigate t different areas f the Instructr Zne. Yu can g directly t the Quick Lg In page by entering int the Address bar f yur Web brwser and then pressing the Enter key. One step is saved. LOGGING OUT OF QUIA In the hrizntal Navigatin bar acrss the tp f a Quia Web page, click n the wrds Lg Out. Tip Be sure t lg ut after yu have cmpleted yur wrk in Quia. 4 STARTING POINTS IN QUIA Creating a Class Page 1. In the Instructr Zne, click n the Classes tab and then click n the Class Pages tab. 2. Near the wrds Create a new class page, click n the G buttn. 3. In the Page Editr, fill in the infrmatin that yu wish and then click n the Save Changes buttn. Creating a Quiz in the Basic Quiz Editr 1. In the Instructr Zne, click n the Quizzes tab and then click n the Basic tab. 2. Next, click n the Create a New Quiz buttn. 3. In the Quiz Editr, add a title, descriptin, and questins; select the settings that yu wish; and then click n the Dne buttn. MCESC Technlgy Department Page 3/13
5 Creating a Survey in the Basic Quiz Editr 1. In the Instructr Zne, click n the Surveys tab. 2. Near the wrds Create a new survey, click n the G buttn. 3. Near the wrds Create Questins, click n the Edit buttn. 4. Use the tabs t select a type f questin and begin entering yur survey questins. When finished, click n the Dne buttn. Creating a Class Rster 1. In the Instructr Zne, click n the Classes tab and then click n the Rster tab. 2. Next, click n the Create a New Class buttn. 3. Enter a name fr the class, select Instructr Enrll, and then click n the Submit buttn. 4. Enter the data fr each student n the class rster and then click n the Save Changes buttn. 5. 6 Quiz Editrs Basic and Advanced surce: quia.cm The Quizzes > Basic and Quizzes > Advanced tabs ffer different editrs but are therwise identical. The editr in the basic tab (the editr is what appears when yu press the Create a new quiz buttn) is easy t learn and prvides a great deal f functinality. The editr in the advanced tab allws yu t d everything yu can d in the basic editr plus a few additinal, mre cmplex tasks. The fllwing table will help yu decide which editr t use: Feature Create questins in eight frmats (multiple chice, true-false, pp-up, multiple crrect, fill-in, initial answer, shrt answer, essay) Basic editr Randmize the questin rder Add a keypad fr entering freign-language diacritics Use LaTe t display math symbls Use HTML tags Include images Include audi and vide clips Disable printing and cpying Advanced editr Create nn-graded survey questins Add bilerplate text and images between questins r at the end f the quiz Reuse questins frm existing quizzes Select questins randmly frm a bank Select questins based n labels that have been set up in the Questin Center MCESC Technlgy Department Page 5/13
7 Imprting a Wrd List int Quia Creating Flashcard, Matching, Cncentratin, r Wrd Search Activities If yu already have an electrnic file that cntains yur cntent (vcabulary list, terminlgy list, etc.), using Quia s Imprt feature may save yu sme time when yu create a Flashcard, Matching, Cncentratin, r Wrd Search Activity. Fr Quia t be able t imprt a file, the file must cnfrm t certain criteria. All files must be in the cmmadelimited (cmma-separated) frmat. Each line created by pressing the Enter key must cntain exactly tw items with n spaces befre r after the separating cmma. Nte the pattern in the fllwing example wrd list: Tw Items per Line Exactly tw items appear n every line. Starting with a Micrsft Wrd File Arrange yur text t cmply with the criteria abve. Hwever, since Quia cannt imprt a regular Micrsft Wrd (.dc) file, yu will need t cnvert yur file t a plain text (.txt) file. In Wrd, under the File menu, chse Save As. Then, frm the Save-as-type drp-dwn menu at the bttm f the resulting dialg bx, chse Plain Text and click Save. Yur file will be cnverted t a plain text (.txt) dcument, which Quia is able t imprt. Cmma-Delimited A cmma separates the pair f items. ne,unus Nte: Phrases Acceptable Fr example, tw bys,du pueri cnfrms t the criteria. tw,du three,tres ne,unus tw,du three,tres N Intervening Spaces N spaces appear befre r after the cmma. Plain Text Starting with a Micrsft Excel Spreadsheet When yur wrd list is entered int a spreadsheet, like Micrsft Excel, yu d nt need t use cmmas as separatrs. The text shuld be placed in tw clumns with each rw cntaining exactly tw items. Hwever, since Quia cannt imprt a regular Micrsft Excel (.xls) file, yur file will need t be cnverted t a cmma-separated (.csv) file. In Excel, under the File menu, chse Save As. Then, frm the Save-as-type drp-dwn menu at the bttm f the resulting dialg bx, chse CSV (Cmma Separated Value) and click Save. Yur file will be cnverted t a cmma-separated (.csv) file, which Quia is able t imprt. CSV (Cmma delimited) Extra Nte: If an item in a line cntains ne r mre cmmas, use qutatin marks t shield the internal cmmas frm being interpreted as separating cmmas. 8 Quiz Distributin Optins surce: quia.cm Distributin Distributing a quiz invlves deciding hw t get yur quiz t yur students, when they'll be allwed access, what kind f feedback they'll see, and what kind f infrmatin yu'll track abut them. URL At the tp f the page, yu'll see the Web address (als knwn as a URL) f yur quiz. It will start with and end in.html. Fr example: If yu give yur URL t students and tell them t type it int their Web brwsers, they'll see yur quiz. Make sure yur students type the URL exactly, r else it wn't wrk. URLs can be difficult t remember and tricky t type accurately. There are a cuple ways t make things easier fr yur students: ing the URL and linking t it frm a class page. ing is discussed next. Class pages are explained at the bttm f this page. this quiz T the right f where yur URL appears, there is an this quiz link. Click n this, and yu'll see a frm where yu can type an message t yur students. Yur will autmatically include the URL f yur quiz. When students receive the , they'll be able t read yur message and click n a link that will take them directly t yur quiz. They wn't need t type the URL. Additinal ptins The Additinal Optins sectin lets yu change a variety f quiz-related settings. These are explained belw. When yu're dne changing the settings, press the Dne buttn. Enabled? If this is set t Yes (which is the default), students will be able t take yur quiz (assuming they are in the right class and the current time falls within yur Allw access range; see belw fr mre infrmatin abut this). If Enabled is set t N, students will be prevented frm taking yur quiz, regardless f any ther setting. Presentatin style There are tw ptins: Shw all questins: The student will see a single page cntaining all f the questins. Shw ne questin at a time: The student prgresses thrugh a series f screens, each cntaining ne questin. If yu chse Shw ne questin at a time, yu can decide whether students are allwed t skip questins and return t them later and whether they can change their answers t questins that they've already submitted. Annymity The annymity setting determines whether student names are tracked. There are three settings: Require student names: All students must enter their names befre being permitted t start the quiz. Names are ptinal: On the quiz start page, students can enter their names r leave the name field blank. D nt ask fr names: The quiz start page des nt ask students fr their names. All students take the quiz annymusly. Feedback Yu can cntrl what students see when they submit their respnses. There are fur ptins: Scre, summary, and answers: When students finish yur quiz, they'll see their percentage scre and a recap f each questin. Quia will remind them what they answered and will als shw them the crrect answer. Scre and summary: Students will see their percentage scre and a recap f each questin; hwever, they will nt be shwn the answers t questins they missed. MCESC Technlgy Department Page 7/13
9 Scre nly: Students will see their verall percentage scre but will nt be tld which questins they missed r what the crrect answers were. N feedback: Students will get a simple message thanking them fr taking the quiz. They wn't be tld their scre, and they wn't see what the crrect answers were. Attempts permitted Yu can set a limit n the number f times a student can take the quiz. The default is unlimited. In cases where at least tw attempts are allwed, yu can decide which attempt t include in the gradebk: the first ne, the last ne, r the best ne (the ne with the highest scre). Time limit If yu enter a time here, students will see a cuntdwn timer while they are taking the quiz. Students must finish befre time expires. If a student is still wrking when time runs ut, the quiz will aut-submit itself. Allw access Here, yu can set a date and time range that yur quiz will be available t students. Initially these fields are blank, meaning that students can take yur quiz at any time (assuming Enabled is set t Yes). T the right f the first line, yu'll see a time zne setting. Make sure the time zne is crrect. If it's nt, g t the Preferences tab in the Instructr Zne t change it. Secret wrd A secret wrd is a passwrd that students must enter in rder t take yur quiz. This ensures that students wn't be able t see the quiz until it's time t take it. (Yu can d the same thing by setting an Allw access range; hwever, sme peple find secret wrd t be a simpler apprach.) Classes Yu can make yur quiz available t anyne r limit it t certain classes f students. T limit it t ne r mre classes, yu'll first need t set up class rsters if yu haven't dne this already. T d this, g t the Classes tab, Rster sub-tab in the Instructr Zne. Assuming yu've set up classes already, yu'll see each class listed in a table. Check the bxes next t the classes t which yu want t give access. Only the classes that are checked will be allwed t take yur quiz. Yu can verride each class's distributin settings if yu wish. The settings yu specify at the tp f the distributin page will affect all classes unless yu verride them. In ther wrds, if yu leave a class's distributin settings blank, it will use the settings frm the tp f the page. Class pages The final sectin f this page lets yu add a link t yur quiz frm ne r mre f yur class pages. (T create a class page, g t the Classes tab in the Instructr Zne.) Check the bxes next t the class pages n which yu want a link t yur quiz t appear. When yu add yur quiz t a class page, yu make it much easier fr students t get t it. Instead f having t remember a URL, they just g t yur class page and click a link. Dne buttn When yu're dne changing yur quiz's distributin settings, press the Dne buttn at the bttm f the page. Changing distributin settings Yu can change yur quiz's distributin settings at any time. T d s, g t the Quizzes tab (either Basic r Advanced) and click the Distribute link next t yur quiz. 10 Open Apprach anyne wh knws the Web address An instructr creates a variety f nline materials in Quia. Each Web page, quiz, survey, r activity is assigned a separate Web address (URL). Anyne wh ges nline and visits ne f the assigned addresses can access the page, quiz, etc. Fr example, a class Web page created by an instructr may have a Web address like Withut the need t lg in t Quia, anyne wh puts that address int his brwser s Address bar can get t and navigate the Web page. If an instructr s a message with the address in the bdy, the reader(s) can simply click n the address and be linked directly t the Web page. Prs Quick and easy Cns Students (participants) must be given different Web address fr each nline item, N secure way t limit wh is able t access nline items Clsed Apprach thse n class rster Quia permits yu as an instructr t develp class rsters. Each student that yu enter receives a Username and Passwrd with which t lg in t the Student Zne. 11 Once lgged in, a student finds a prfile that includes a listing f past quizzes and a link t the Web page fr his r her class. The student can get a sense f hw he is ding verall in his nline activities. Belw, fr example, is a summary f a fictitius student s perfrmance n past quizzes. Imprtantly, under the Clsed Apprach, a basic lg in prcedure can allw a student t access all his links t class Web page, quizzes, and ther activities. Under the Open Apprach, a student wuld have t learn (r have ed t him) a different Web address fr every instructr-develped activity, test, survey, r class Web page.
