2 The Natioal Survey of Studet Egagemet (NSSE) was created to accomplish two core objectives: 1. Refocus the atioal discourse about college quality o teachig ad learig; 2. Provide colleges ad uiversities with diagostic, actioable iformatio that ca iform efforts to improve the quality of udergraduate educatio. NSSE achieves these objectives by documetig the extet to which first-year ad seior studets egage i educatioal practices that research has foud to be related to learig ad developmet, i a educatioal cotext that supports ad promotes studet success. Sice its first atioal admiistratio i 2000, more tha 1,500 bachelor s-gratig istitutios from research uiversities to baccalaureate colleges have adopted NSSE as a importat compoet of their assessmet programs. NSSE results iform accreditatio self-studies, bechmarkig efforts, faculty developmet programs, strategic plas, improvemet iitiatives, recruitmet materials, ad more. 4 How Is NSSE Admiistered? NSSE hadles all aspects of survey admiistratio, icludig ivitatios, remider messages, delivery of the olie survey, ad compilatio of data. This esures cosistecy ad comparability amog istitutios ad establishes a foudatio for accurate comparisos. Survey admiistratio begis as early as February (subject to a istitutio s caledar) ad closes o Jue 1. While the paper survey istrumet is o loger available for a stadard NSSE admiistratio, istitutios may select regular mail as the method for cotactig studets (with a reduced sample size). Participatig Istitutios Provide a studet data file cotaiig cotact iformatio for all first-year ad seior studets; Develop promotioal campaigs to ecourage survey participatio; Customize ivitatio materials, icludig istitutioal sigatories that studets will recogize; Work with NSSE to esure compliace with protocols for research with huma subjects. NSSE Assigs a Project Services team to guide istitutios through the survey admiistratio process; Provides a password-protected, Web-based iterface for istitutios to upload materials, customize ivitatios, schedule recruitmet messages, moitor survey admiistratio, ad dowload reports ad data; Seds survey ivitatios to all sampled studets, ad up to four remider messages to orespodets; Delivers customized reports, data files, ad additioal resources for istitutioal improvemet efforts. Recruitmet Method Istitutios choose whether NSSE will recruit survey participats by or regular mail. cotact allows for a cesus of eligible studets ad more accurate populatio estimates at the same cost. Both methods provide studetspecific logi iformatio to access the olie survey. All eligible studets receive recruitmet messages by . Regular Mail A radom sample of studets receives two recruitmet letters cotaiig log-i iformatio to access the olie survey. Norespodets receive a remider postcard ad up to two remiders. The recruitmet method allows for a cesus of all eligible first-year ad seior studets by default, but istitutios may request a radom sample. 4

5 Customizatio Optios NSSE provides several opportuities for survey ad report customizatio. Istitutios may add up to two short, topical modules or they may participate i a cosortium that icludes additioal questios (cosortium participats may elect oe topical module). Multi-campus systems may register as a system to coordiate their activities ad ca desigate a compariso group of system istitutios. Topical Modules Short questio sets o topics such as academic advisig, writig experieces, civic egagemet, experieces with diversity, ad techology. Cosortia A cosortium of six or more istitutios may form aroud a commo iterest, similar istitutioal missios, or the eeds of a state or uiversity system. A cosortium may apped up to 20 additioal survey items (subject to NSSE review). Multi-campus Systems Systems receive side-by-side istitutioal comparisos ad a member istitutio data file (data sharig agreemets required for each istitutio). There is o fee for these services uless a system appeds additioal questios as a system cosortium. Customized Compariso Groups Reports display each istitutio s results alogside those for three customizable compariso groups selected from the pool of participatig istitutios. Customized Major Groups Istitutios may customize the groupig of related majors for the Major Field Report. NSSE staff are available to work with cosortium ad system coordiators to sposor Webiars ad workshops to facilitate data use amog participatig istitutios. The $300 NSSE registratio fee will be waived for istitutios coductig a paired BCSSE 2013-NSSE 2014 admiistratio (BCSSE i summer or fall followed by NSSE i sprig). BCSSE 2013 was updated to alig with the updated NSSE survey for a more comprehesive aalysis of the first-year experiece.
