Server Server is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered it- self a separate server. For the purpose of server-based licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements for each server which is made available to the program. Socket is a unit of measure by which the size of the server is classified. A socket is electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip. A processor chip is electronic circuitry containing one or more processor cores that plugs into a socket. A processor core is a functional unit within a computing device that interprets and executes program instructions, and consists of at least an instruction control unit and one or more arithmetic or logic units. At the time of this announcement, the number of sockets available in IBM System x and Blade Center servers is used to define the size of the server for licensing IBM Systems Director Express Edition for x86. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each Server on which the program is installed or managing. 8 4-socket nodes, Systems Director Express Edition may be ordered using the large server charge metric. The size of the server is based on the following criteria: Small server: 1 Socket Medium server: 2-4 Sockets Large server: More than 4 sockets Per install and managed switch IBM Systems Director Network Control uses per install and per managed switch charging metrics. An installation license is required for the machine running the IBM Systems Director Network Control program. A managed switch license is also required for each switch and router being managed. Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each install of the program. A license is also required for each switch and router being managed, and are categorized as virtual, physical, or distributed. Virtual: A virtual switch is a software-only, managed switch that runs on, and manages traffic for, a single server. Physical: A physical switch is a hardware based switch. This can be a fixed or modular switch, of any physical size and number of ports. It must be a single chassis that shares power (electricity). The device is capable of being managed independently, but need not be deployed as such: Switch features may allow stacking multiple switches to reduce the number of management points or it may support being separated into different logical switches. Distributed: A distributed switch is a single logical switch that is distributed across multiple physical devices. This can be a distributed virtual switch (software) running across multiple servers, or a single logical switch distributed across multiple physical devices (for example, a switch with distributed line cards). The distributed components are not managed independently, but rather a central management point is provided as part of the logical switch. Install Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each install of the program. Populated socket Populated socket is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A socket is electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip. A populated socket is a socket in which a processor chip is installed. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each populated socket on each physical server made available to the program. Managed chassis Managed chassis is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. A chassis is a physical enclosure structure that provides services such as power, cooling, networking, various interconnects, and management to IT elements which dock inside the enclosure. 9 Licensee must obtain managed chassis entitlements for each chassis managed by the program. Processor Value Unit Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology, defined within the PVU Table by Processor Vendor Brand, Type and Model Number at pvu_licensing_for_customers.html and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purposes of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub- Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity Licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores 2 in the physical hardware environment made available to, or managed by, the program except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at Counting_Software_licenses_using_sp ecific_virtualization_technologies.html Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores for the systems on which the resources managed or processed by the program reside. 2 An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be, or is, limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
