3 Getting Started Pearson e-bookshelf Overview Download e-textbook You have to download the e-textbook on bookshelf when using a tablet. If the available storage size of tablet is below 1GB, you need to clear the space before download the e-textbook. Update e-textbook You will see in the bookshelf when there is any update on e-textbook. To do so, you need to: quit (see the details as below) and relaunch the e-textbook app. tap beside EACH downloaded book to start updating. quit the app and relaunch it again to see the updated content or use the enhanced features after updating of ALL downloaded books. HOW TO QUIT THE APP? ipad users 1. Press the Home button (the round one) twice to display the icons of all recently opened apps in the bar. 2. Flick the Pearson e-bookshelf app away to quit. Android tablet users 1. Tab the Recent apps button (next to the Home button) to display all recently opened apps. 2. Flick the Pearson e-bookshelf app away to quit. 2

5 1. How do I view notes and resources shared by my teachers? Your teachers can share their notes, resources or assign online exercises to you. When they send you a notification about these resources or exercises, you will get a message in the e-textbook. Click on the icon for these notifications. Click on the resource name. You will be asked to download it and redirect to the corresponding page. Double check if the e-textbook is connected to the Internet. Share resources / assigned exercises Simply click on the resource name to open it. Or you can also go to the Table of Contents and choose the Resource tab. Any resources shared by your teachers will be indicated by Shared by in the resource name. All resources shared by your teachers will appear on relevant pages of the e-textbook. Look for icons marked with a red pin. To make sure that you get the most up-to-date shared resources on the current page, choose the Refresh button. 4

6 2. Can I add my own notes to the e-textbook? You can add notes to your e-textbook with the following buttons: Text Add text directly to the page. Note Add notes to the page. Pictures Add pictures to the e-textbook. Web link Add URL links to useful websites. Drawing Add markings and drawings with this tool. Notes, pictures and web links added by students are marked with a green pin. 5

7 3. Can I choose what resources to show on my e-textbook? You can choose the types of resources to show on your e-textbook. Choose the Show / Hide option and select the types of resources that you want to display on the book pages. Show / Hide Select the types of resources you want to show on your e-textbook. 6

8 4. How do I complete an ilesson activity? ilesson activities are interactive in-class games to be used on tablet devices. You complete them during class time with the rest of your classmates. You cannot complete them outside the classroom. To start an ilesson activity, you need to start the e-textbook app on a tablet device. Tap on the ilesson icon to get the I m ready! screen to get started. Once your teacher sends out questions in class, you can complete them individually or in groups on your tablet device. 7

What is iactivity (iboard, iforum, ipost etc)? iactivity is a collection of digital resources designed to enable you and your classmates to post and share pictures, opinions or writings. iactivity consists of the following interactive tools: iboard a digital bulletin board for posting pictures. iforum an online forum for sharing opinions. ipost an online platform for posting your writings such as articles and stories etc. Add a post Add a post by uploading a picture or entering your opinion / writing. Refresh Back to top Throughout the school year, each student can upload about 50 pictures (2MB max per picture) and about 50 audio clips in total (6MB max per recording). 8

10 All iactivities encourage peer evaluation and sharing. They allow you to view your classmates work; leave comments for classmates; Like a post on iforum. Like (on iforum) Encourage your classmates with the Like button! Comments / Messages You can leave a comment or message for your classmates. Your teachers can also activate these functions for peer evaluation: Peer rating: you evaluate your classmates work according to a set of criteria. 9

11 6. Can I read the e-textbook offline? Yes, you can read the e-textbook offline. To do so, you need to download and install the Pearson e-textbook app on your tablet device; sign in your account and download the e-textbook that you want. After you have downloaded an e-textbook on your tablet device, you can do these offline read your e-textbook; edit / view bookmarks; add notes and resources (e.g. text, pictures, web links etc); submit iworkout and other exercises (e.g. Recording activity and iassessment etc) When you add notes or do iworkout offline, all materials will be saved on your local device. You will see on your e-textbook. Once you sign in your account online again, you need to choose the Refresh button to upload any resources or iworkout etc that have been created or done while you are offline. To see if iworkout and other exercise are submitted successfully or not, you can check the status of the icons out Status iworkout Recording Activity Not Submitted Submitted online Completed and saved on local device Note-taking Flipped Classroom iassessment 10
