1 Know How to Use epukapuka on a Tablet June 2016 What is epukapuka? epukapuka is a website that gives you access to borrow ebooks and eaudiobooks using your Hutt City Library card and password. ebooks and eaudiobooks are books that are published in an electronic format (text or audio) which you can download and enjoy on your computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or ereader. epukapuka gives you free access to over 5000 ebooks and eaudiobooks from a wide range of contemporary authors. You can borrow up to 5 books at a time. 2 ereaders and Tablets - Which is right for you? Tablet Does not need a computer to download books from epukapuka Bright full colour screen Can do (almost) everything that can be done on a computer Most (but not all) can be considered too heavy to hold for long periods Will have storage space for books, movies and media Popular tablets: Kobo Arc, Apple ipad, Samsung Galaxy Tab series ereader Needs a computer to download books from epukapuka Designed primarily for ebooks display May have other functions, but these are usually secondary to the main task of displaying ebooks Light and easy to hold Storage space for books (and audiobooks) Popular ereaders: Kobo, Sony, Kindle (be aware you cannot download epukapuka books onto a Kindle) Accessing epukapuka using a tablet epukapuka books are distributed by a company called OverDrive. To manage books on your tablet you need to install the OverDrive Media Console app (application) onto your tablet On your device tap the icon for your store account ios Android Windows In the Search, field type overdrive Tap Install Open the OverDrive app When prompted to create an Overdrive Account, tap Sign up An OverDrive Account syncs your bookmarks across multiple devices and manages the DRM (Digital Rights Management) that protects ebooks Enter your details and a password to sign up for an Overdrive Account 2 of 8

3 Using the OverDrive App with epukapuka Once the device is authorised tap the Get Books/Add a Title icon Android ios Windows If you haven t already selected the library tap on Add a library Type in Hutt City Libraries and tap Search Select Hutt City Libraries and then Lower North Island The epukapuka website will Searching and Downloading on epukapuka Tap Sign in on the banner or on the profile icon to sign in Examples used from here on are using ios, however it is very similar for all devices. Please ask a library staff member for assistance if you require it. Tap on Feilding Public Library and select Hutt City Libraries from the list Sign in with your library card, Facebook account or Overdrive account whichever one you set up on page 2 Tap Sign In 3 of 8

4 You are now logged in to epukapuka and can start borrowing books You can Search to look up specific titles or authors Tap on the icon to view your borrowed items (checkouts), holds, wish list & settings Tap on the icon to browse or to view the featured collections Scroll down the page to lists of features and new titles The search or browse results will look like this The status above each cover indicates whether there is a wait list or if the item is available now Tap on a cover to view the full record Underneath the cover is the format of the record ebook or AudioBook You can borrow or reserve a title from here too The full record will look like this To issue the book, click on the Borrow button. To change the loan period (1, 2 or 3 weeks) tap the arrow next to the Borrow button You can also read a sample or add it to your wish list 4 of 8

5 Once you have borrowed a title a message will appear briefly Tap on Add to app to download the title to your bookshelf You can see everything you have borrowed on the Checkouts page, where you can also add them to the app You can also tap on Read Now to start reading straight away in your browser Finding your book After the book has downloaded, you need to return to the Overdrive Bookshelf in the app Tap the book to start reading of 8

6 Returning a title epukapuka titles will automatically return when the lending period has ended You can return a title early if you want You can return a title from the epukapuka website if you have not downloaded it to a device Go to your Checkouts and tap on Return Otherwise, you will need to return the book on the device its been downloaded to in the OverDrive app Press and hold your finger in the middle of the cover image until the menu appears Tap Return to library, then tap Return Reserving titles and using the Wish List If a title is on loan to someone else, you can reserve it or add it to your Wish List When viewing the full record tap Place a Hold You will be ed when it is ready to borrow. You can change the address used for notifications via the Holds page In your settings you can also choose to have your reserved titles automatically checkout to you when they become available 6 of 8

7 Alternatively, you can add the title to your Wish List Just click on Add to Wish List View your current Holds/ Reserves and Wish List by tapping on Account Tap on Holds to view your holds/reservations Tap on Lists to view your Wish List Renew Items Three days before an item is due back, a Request Again option displays on the Checkouts page This let s you reserve an item so you can borrow it again Tap Request again, enter your address and submit. If the item has other requests on it, you will be added to the queue however if no one else is waiting you will be able to borrow it again when your current loan expires. 7 of 8
