2 Description Why migrate to IDS? Informix Dynamic Server (IDS) V9 is an industry-leading, online transaction processing (OLTP) database for enterprise and workgroup computing. IDS focuses on high availability, performance, and data security. IDS V9 has been very successful with organizations and Business Partners who want to leverage their existing assets while continuing to meet an increasingly demanding technology environment. IDS is a scalable database that dynamically adjusts core engine operational parameters, without degradation of performance, as requirements occur for larger databases or more concurrent users. This saves administrative time and resources as well as making more efficient use of hardware resources. The use of object relational technology dramatically increases the performance and efficiency of enterprise applications. IDS V9 contains enhanced application and data availability features through the improved coexistence of the proprietary High-Availability Data Replication (HDR) and Enterprise Replication (ER) technologies. The current version has shown performance improvements of eight to fifteen percent over all previous IDS releases, based on internal performance testing. IDS V9.4 also removes many of the previous IDS size limitations and can now handle greater than 2 GB chunks of data and much larger instance and file sizes than in previous releases. The net result is that up to 128 petabytes can now be stored in a single instance. IDS V9.4 also integrates very well with other IBM middleware technology such as WebSphere. IDS migration services are available from IBM for customers who would like assistance with database design and migrating applications and data. Product positioning IDS is an industry-leading, general-purpose OLTP database for the enterprise and workgroup. It is available in two configurations: Workgroup Edition: Ideal for small to medium size businesses and departmental solutions that require the power of an enterprise database. Enterprise Edition: Provides all of the features of IDS Workgroup Edition plus features that take advantage of today s large-scale SMP systems. Informix Dynamic Server Workgroup Editions restrictions The following restrictions apply: Server limitation You may not install or use the program on a server that has more than two processors. Function limitations You may not use the following functions of the program: parallel data query, data partitioning, parallel backup, parallel restore, parallel load, parallel unload, optical disks, ER, HADR, Vector Markup Language (VML) (ability to access more than two GB RAM). IDS Enterprise Edition IDS Enterprise Edition has all the features and attributes of Workgroup Edition plus: Data partitioning Partition your data across multiple disks or disk subsystems via simple round-robin distribution or powerful range (expression)-based fragmentation techniques. Parallel data query Once your data is partitioned, you can leverage IDS s parallel data query technology to query each partition in parallel. Use this feature to dramatically speed the queries in your applications. Parallel backup and restore IDS Enterprise Edition can back up and restore your data in parallel. There is no need to serially back up your database; instead, back up each partition individually. Parallel load and unload The high performance loader provided with IDS Enterprise Edition takes advantage of IDS s data partitioning model to speed moving data in and out of your database. Enterprise replication This is a high speed, very flexible, low latency replication solution that is ideal for the needs of the enterprise. HDR HDR is IDS s proven high-availability solution. HDR has been shipping with IDS since 1993 and continues to provide the very high levels of continuous availability that Informix customers have enjoyed for nearly a decade. IBM Informix Dynamic Server includes the following core products: IBM Informix Connect: This runtime connectivity product includes the runtime libraries of the IBM Informix Client SDK product. These libraries are required by applications running on client machines when accessing Informix servers. Informix Connect is needed when finished applications are ready to be deployed. IBM Informix Server Administrator: This browser-based, cross-platform database server administration tool provides an easy-to-use interface for the IDS command line, thus eliminating the need to memorize commands and options. IBM Informix Java Database Connectivity (JDBC): The JavaSoft specification of a standard API allows Java programs to access database management systems. The JDBC API consists of a set of interfaces and classes written in the Java programming language. This JDBC driver also includes Embedded SQL/J which supports embedded SQL in Java. JDBC is a platform-independent, industry-standard Type 4 JDBC driver that provides enhanced support for

3 distributed transactions and is optimized to work with IBM WebSphere Application Server.
