2 Description DFS is a distributed file system running on DCE that provides a single, shared file space for all authorized users from all possible locations. DFS lets you access files from multiple heterogeneous platform servers, regardless of the actual location of the file or location of the end user. DFS features include: Replication enables high availability by placing multiple copies of files and applications across multiple server machines. Location-independent file names allow for scalability files can be relocated and additional machines and disk resources can be brought online easily. Caching stores the most commonly used files close to the desktop to expedite information access. Remote, online administration makes configuration changes and user updates simple. Heterogeneous platform coverage helps leverage existing IT investments. DFS is the best file-sharing solution for large organizations using DCE that have multiple servers on multiple platforms. Due to its replication and location-independent file names, DFS can be easily scaled to meet the demands of large, geographically distributed organizations. Replication keeps information highly available and close to the users, increasing data availability and reducing network traffic; the location independence of files enables system administrators to easily add and remove users or move files without disrupting service. Year 2000 This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it. The service end date for this Year 2000 ready product is July 21, Euro Currency This program is not impacted by euro currency. Product Positioning provides a gateway solution that allows access to DFS file space without requiring entitlements for every user of the system. An organization can use one machine with DFS client software as a gateway for exporting the DFS file space to as many users as is practical (constrained only by their hardware and network). DFS for Gateway Environments provides five key benefits critical to distributed application file sharing in the global information age: Performance Your most frequently requested files are efficiently cached from remote servers to the local desktop for faster data retrieval, reduced server loads, and greater network bandwidth. Memory- and disk-based caching provides high performance and fast data recovery if you need to reboot. Data consistency and integrity are provided via a server-based mechanism that monitors client machines and informs them when their cached data is no longer current. Scalability File names are location-independent, because they do not incorporate machine name or location information. This creates a unique plug-and-play environment. Administrators can move files easily and add or reconfigure resources to meet changing user and system demands, while ensuring uninterrupted access to the data. Security Multiple security mechanisms control the access and usage of data. Kerberos provides mutual client and server authentication that allows only authorized users into the environment. Access Control Lists (ACLs) assign specific data access privileges to users or groups of users. Using ACLs, system administrators can control access to information at the directory and even file level, ensuring the integrity and security of critical data. Encryption options are available for files as they travel across the network for greater data and system integrity within and between organizations. Availability Groups of files are automatically (or by request) replicated across multiple servers within the enterprise, creating a mirrored environment. You gain high-availability access to data. This approach eliminates any single point of failure and provides uninterrupted access to data during routine maintenance, system backups, and temporary system failures. Cost-Effective Administration Related files, clients, and server machines are grouped into domains (or cells) to simplify administration and configuration operations. Cells can be transparently linked into much larger administrative domains. Administrators can design extremely large-scale but manageable distributed systems. System administrators can change configurations from anywhere in the network, making remote administration extremely cost-effective. Utilizing remote administration facilities and GUI tools, a small number of administrators can manage a large number of users. DFS for Gateway Environments charges for the number of server installations and the number of client accesses. Licenses for server installs include entitlement for 10 single-use client accesses for the purpose of system administration or Web content development. These 10 single-use client installs may not be used for any other purpose, and explicitly may not be used to provide access to DFS file space as any kind of gateway. Prices indicated are list price. DFS for Gateway Environments participates in the IBM Passport Advantage program to provide discount, support, and upgrade protection. Program packages include the license to install one server and one client. In order to obtain licenses to install more than one server and/or client, customers need to order additional Proofs of Entitlement (PoE) along with the program package. Terms and Conditions: For this Agreement, a Licensed Node refers to either: 1. A machine with a single node 2. A single node on a machine with multiple nodes Proofs of Entitlement are required for any node on which DFS 3.1 client or server components are present or server components are present. The Program Package for includes one DFS 3.1 File Server Proof of Entitlement and one DFS 3.1 Gateway Proof of Entitlement. You may install and use the DFS Control Center component as required by your environment. No proofs of entitlement are required. For each Proof of Entitlement for the DFS 3.1 File Server you acquire: You may install: 1. The DFS 3.1 server component on one Licensed Node and 2. The DFS 3.1 client component on that same Licensed Node and 3. The DFS 3.1 client component on a maximum of 10 more machines (other than the Licensed Node) for use by up to 10 separate persons and create up to 10 unique DFS User accounts for purposes of administration or content development/management. These are single-user client accesses that may not be used for a Web server or gateway for other users to access DFS file space. They are for administration only. For each Proof of Entitlement for the DFS 3.1 Gateway Client you acquire: You may install one copy of the DFS 3.1 client component and the DFS/NFS translator component on a single Licensed Node. This authenticates NFS users so they may access DFS file space. You may use this Licensed Node to export the DFS file space for use by any number of users, and create unique DFS User accounts for each of those users. DCE Use Restriction You are authorized to use the DCE servers and client components only in the support of your use of DFS. Use of any DCE client components for any purpose other than support of DFS requires you to separately acquire DCE licenses. The following DCE servers are provided for use with DFS: Cell Directory Service Distributed Time Service DCE Security Service The DCE client components (Base Services) are also provided for use with DFS. You may install any or all of the DCE servers on one machine for each DFS 3.1 File Server Proof of Entitlement. The machine with the DCE server(s) need not be the same machine used for the DFS server(s). You may install the DCE client components as necessary to support your use of the DFS environment
5 Example 1 A new customer wishes to install five servers and 10 gateway clients to allow access to DFS file space for an uncertain number of users (for example, a public Web site where the number of visitors to the Web site is not known). In this example the customer would purchase: 1. One Program Package, which includes one server Proof of Entitlement (PoE) and one client PoE 2. Four server Install Proof of Entitlements 3. Nine client Proof of Entitlements The program package will deliver one set of CDs (containing code and online documentation) and Quick Beginnings hardcopy manuals. In this example the customer has the right to install: 1. DFS Server software (any platform) on up to five machines 2. DFS Client software (any platform) on up to 10 machines (to provide access to DFS for any number of users) 3. DFS Client software (any platform) on up to 50 machines (10 per server license purchased) as single-use clients (for the purpose of system administration or Web content development) 4. DCE Server Components on up to five machines (not necessarily the same five machines on which the DFS Servers are installed) 5. DCE Base Services on as many machines as necessary to support the environment Example 2 A new customer wants to allow 70 users access to DFS file space, and he has three machines to use as DFS file servers, but only one machine to which all 70 users can connect for access. This customer could use one DFS Gateway Client access and export the DFS file system to the 70 users (by any means available). The DFS Gateway Client access would reside on the machine to which all users have access (via remote login or timesharing, and so on). In this example the customer would purchase: 1. One Program Package (which includes one gateway server PoE and one client PoE) 2. Two Server Install PoEs The program package will deliver one set of CDs containing code and online documentation and Quick Beginnings hardcopy manuals. The customer would have the right to install: 1. DFS Server software (any platform) on up to three machines 2. DFS Client software (any platform) on one machine (to provide access to DFS for any number of users) 3. DFS Client software (any platform) on up to 30 machines (10 per server licensed purchased) as single-use clients (for purpose of system administration) Existing customers can order a media package to obtain software for platforms that they might not currently have. Note that if customers plan to expand their current installation size (that is, add to their current number of servers or client installs) they must also purchase Proofs of Entitlement for the additional servers or clients.
