3 The Health Sciences Library (HSL) PDA Page The HSL has mandated to provide information and access to PDA resources for NOSM members including Students, Faculty and Residents. Currently our PDA page provides access to Licensed Subscriptions, recommended Freely Available Resources and recommended Resources for Purchase. A sample of what you ll find: Library Subscriptions: Uptodate, PocketConsult and Essential Evidence Plus. Freely Available Resources: epocrates, NLM Mobile and NCBI Bookshelf. Resources for Purchase: Skyscape and Unbound Medicine (discounts for Students). 3 Bookmarking the Library s PDA Page Bookmarking Our PDA page can be bookmarked in your mobile device s browser: 1) In Safari go to 2) Tap the plus sign at the bottom of the browser. 3) Tap Add Bookmark. 4) Name the bookmark something you ll remember like Library PDA Page. 5) Tap Done. Viewing Bookmarks To view the bookmark you ve created: 1) Tap the book symbol at the bottom of the browser. 2) Your bookmark should be visible in the list. 3) Tap the title of the bookmark you wish to view.
4 Lexi-Comp Mobile 4 Features Lexi-Drugs o Updates are posted multiple times per week and are included with your subscription. o Includes information on Canadian Medications not approved in the U.S. o The content is not subject to third party (pharma) recommendations, suggestions, or influence over-the-counter (OTC) drugs. Lexi-Interact o Perform an analysis of a patient's entire drug and natural product profile and identify possible interactions. o Includes over 1800 generic drugs covering over 5400 brand names. o Data on the most commonly used natural products. Lexi-Lab & Diagnostic Procedures o Designed for medical practitioners requiring a complete reference for clinical lab and diagnostic information. o Covers over 1200 laboratory tests, radiological procedures, and medical procedures. o Information on patient preparation, specimen collection/handling, and clinical test result interpretation within numerous clinical areas and diagnostic disciplines. Harrison s Practice o Point-of-care diagnosis and management tool for the most common medical conditions o Drug and condition hyper-links, as well as links from Laboratory Tests and Diagnostic Procedures, allow users to quickly access related information o Applicable to inpatient and outpatient settings Lexi-CALC o Includes multiple clinically related calculators including background calculations and references where applicable
5 Direct Installation 5 Download Lexi-Comp *NOTE: You will require access to a wireless internet or data plan connection to download and register the Lexi-Comp app. 1) Tap the App Store icon in the bottom right of your device. 2) Click in the search box in the top right of the App Store. 3) Type in Lexi-Comp. 4) Select Lexi-Comp Institutional Application. 5) Select the Lexi-Comp Institutional Application under the ipad Apps heading.
6 6) Click the Free button. 6 7) The app will begin to download. 8) The app will lose its transparency when it s done downloading. Registering Your Lexi-Comp App 1) Tap the Lexi-Comp icon on your device and accept the disclaimer. 2) Register the product by including your , Physician Student status and Academic Institution. *You must use your NOSM address to register. 3) Click the Add Product button. 4) Enter your Product Code. *Contact the Library for code* askthelibrary@nosm.ca 5) You will then be provided with a success message and a note to run updates.
7 Running Lexi-Comp Updates 1) From the Updates page tap Select All in the top left corner of the page. 7 2) Tap Update in the top right corner. 3) Updates will then begin downloading. You may find you have to run updates a few times the first time you download the app. Follow steps 1) and 2), above, to do this.
8 Lexi-Drugs To view Lexi-Drugs: 1) Tap the Library icon at the bottom left of any page from within the Lexi-Comp app. 2) Tap Lexi-Drugs. 8 There are a number of ways to view drugs through Lexi-Drugs. Let s go through a few! Drug Index Drugs 1) Tap Drugs to view the general drug index.
9 2) Let s search for the proton-pump inhibitor Losec. Tap the Search Lexi-Drugs box and type in Losec. *NOTE: You could also search using the drugs generic name Omeprazole. 9 3) Tap Losec from the list of results (we are not looking at the MUPS version of the drug). 4) This will take you to the complete drug record. To review the record either scroll down OR tap the Jump button in the top right. 5) When you tap Jump you will be presented with the index to the record. This allows you to select what section you wish to view. Scroll down and tap Adult Dosing.
10 6) This will jump you to the Adult Dosing section of the drug record. 10 Drug Index Pharmacologic Category Let s search for a drug now based upon its pharmacological category. We ll use the example of Beta-Blockers. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs. 2) Tap Pharmacologic Category. 3) Tap in the search box at the top and type in Beta. 4) You will be presented with a list of Beta-Blockers. From here select which one best suits your query. Drug Index Chemotherapy Regimen Let s say you have a patient with node-negative breast cancer being treated with the AC regimen and you would like information on the dosing schedule. Using the Chemotherapy Regimen index is the best way to approach searching for this information. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs.
11 2) Tap Chemotherapy Regimen. 11 3) Tap AC from the list of regimens. 4) Scroll down the record to view the complete regimen.
12 Index Chemo Regimens by Use 12 Alternatively we can use the Chemo Regimens by Use Index to look up other regimens for treating a patient with breast-cancer. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs. 2) Tap Chemo Regimens by Use. 3) Scroll down and tap Breast Cancer. 4) Select a regimen. Drug Index Special Alerts Special Alerts are recent important updates made to drug records. Let s say you heard a recent report on Desipramine on the news but you only caught the last bit. You can check the Special Alerts section to see if any information on this report is available through your Lexi-Comp Mobile app. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs. 2) Tap Special Alerts. 3) Tap in the search box and start typing in Desipramine. 4) Tap Desipramine in the list of results.
13 5) You will then be presented with the details of the Special Alert. 13 Drug Index Charts & Special Topics The Charts & Special Topics index narrows your search to material within the free text sections of Lexi-Comp database (introduction, appendices, and special topics). These sections include valuable reference material, as well as guidelines, articles, graphs, and tables. Here we ll search for drug therapy information to support patient smoking cessation. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Drugs. 2) Tap Charts & Special Topics. 3) Scroll down the page to the section on Nicotine dependence and related treatments for our information. Drug Index International Brand Names The International Brand Names index allows you to search for foreign drug names. For example, try searching for Gravol in the International Brand Names index. Note the U.S. versus the Canadian names for the drug.
14 14 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs. 2) Tap International Brand Names. 3) Search for Gravol. 4) Tap Gravol in the results list. Drug Index Black Box Warnings The Black Box Warnings Index allows you to search for drugs with Black Box Warnings as issued by the FDA. This information is normally provided on an insert with drug packaging and highlighted with a black border. For example, try searching for Benazepril in the Black Box Warnings index. Scroll half way down the resulting entry and in bold black text you will find the associated Black Box warning. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs. 2) Tap Black Box Warnings. 3) Search for Benazepril. 4) Tap Benazepril in the results list. Drug Index Restrictions The Restrictions Index allows you to search for drugs with known restrictions. For example, search Amevive in the Restrictions index. When you open the record tap Jump then Restrictions to view them. 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lexi-Drugs. 2) Tap Restrictions. 3) Search for Amevie. 4) Tap Amevive in the results list. 5) Tap Jump. 6) Tap Restrictions. Lab & Diagnostic Procedures L & DP Index - Main Index The main index provides an alphabetical listing of all labs, procedures, and topics referenced in the database. You ll notice that the Main Index is organized by lab and procedure title. So if you have a lab or procedure in mind this is where to start. To access the Main Index for Lab & Diagnostic Procedures: 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lab & Diagnostic Procedures. 2) Tap Main Index.
15 L & DP Index - Keywords 15 The Keywords Index provides an alphabetical listing of references to procedure names based on diagnostic property, disease entity, organ system, or syndrome. You ll notice that the Keywords index is primarily condition based and links you to tests and procedures relating to those conditions. So if you have particular condition in mind, but not a specific lab or procedure, this is where to start. To access the Keyword Index for Lab & Diagnostic Procedures: 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lab & Diagnostic Procedures. 2) Tap Keywords. 3) Tap in the top search box and type in Allergy. 4) Tap Allergy (Food) in the list of results.
16 5) Select what procedure you re interested in. Here we ve selected Allergy, Food Tests (aka oral challenges). 16 L & DP Index - Charts & Special Topics The Charts & Special Topics area in Lab & Diagnostic Procedures provides charts and tables from Lexi-Comp's printed handbooks, specially configured for the ipad. To access the Charts & Special Topics for Lab & Diagnostic Procedures: 1) From the Library page in Lexi-Comp tap Lab & Diagnostic Procedures. 2) Tap Charts & Special Topics. Harrison s Practice HP Index - Main Index The Main Index of Harrison s Practice permits you to search for diseases and some treatments by first name. Try searching for Uremia as an example. Don t forget to use the Jump button in the top right corner to jump to different sections of the record. HP Index ICD9 Code The ICD9 Code Index of Harrison s Practice allows you to search by International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification codes. It is unlikely you will be using these in your everyday practice. They are primarily used in codifying medical records for statistical purposes. HP Index Topics The Topics Index allows you to search on a variety of topics ranging from diseases, symptoms and some vitamins.
17 HP Index Specialties 17 The Specialties Index enables you to search by medical specialty (Oncology, Neurology etc.) for diseases and therapies. Lexi-Interact Here we ll check for if/what interactions exist between Advil and Ketorolac. 1) At the bottom of any page from within the Lexi-Comp app tap the Interact icon. 2) Tap Add Drug / Herb / Food. 3) Type Advil in the search bar that appears. 4) Tap Advil [OTC]. 5) Tap Add Drug / Herb / Food again. 6) Type Ketorolac in the search bar that appears.
18 7) Tap Ketorolac. 18 8) You should now see both drugs in your list. *NOTE: You could add a third drug, herb or food at this point. 9) Tap Analyze in the top right. 10) The Interactions page will then open. If there is an interaction it will appear in the list. Tap Advil [OTC] Ketorolac.
19 19 11) You should now see the full interaction record for Advil [OTC] Ketorolac. Calc *NOTE from Lexi-Comp: This calculator should not be solely relied upon as all information about a patient should be considered to properly prescribe and monitor drug therapy, and to provide quality care to your patients. Here we ll search how to calculate pediatric body surface area: 1) From any page within the Lexi-Comp app tap Calc at the bottom. 2) Scroll down OR tap B in the right hand alpha list. 3) Tap Body Surface Area: Pediatric.
20 20 4) Tap in the Weight box and then the Height box to enter your measurements. *NOTE: You can change the units of measurement by tapping the pull down menu to the right of the weight and height boxes. 5) Tap Calculate. 6) Your results should now be displayed in the BSA box bellow.
