In fact, some are not really apps at all, but rather mobile enhanced versions of websites and databases that are provided to University of Manitoba and hospital users. There are three main categories of apps that are referred to throughout this document: UofM licensed resource Available from itunes App Store Internet website These resources are primarly websites (see Internet website, below) that can be made into shortcuts on your device for quick and easy access. Any resource with the UofM logo indicates that you must have a UofM staff or student card to access. See page 6 of this handout for instructions on how to create a shortcut. Many vendors are creating apps for their products that are made available through the itunes App Store. These apps will only work with ios devices: iphone, ipad, itouch. It is possible to create shortcuts on your home screen to web resources that are not apps that come from the itunes App Store. These shortcuts can then be launched from your device s home screen like an app, and do not require an ios device. See page 6 of this handout for instructions on how to create a shortcut. 3 PubMed 3 Other Useful Apps: Procedures Free interface for searching articles found in MEDLINE and PubMed. Includes Best Evidence search as well as advanced search with some limiters. Free app that integrates with the UofM s electronic holdings to provide access to full text. 4 Other Useful Apps: Medical Translators 4 Other Useful Apps: For Your Patient MediBabble Translator is a robust history taking and examination tool designed to improve the safety, efficiency, and overall quality of care for non English speaking patients. MedlinePlus Mobile includes health topics, drug information and a dictionary from the National Library of Medicine that is written for consumers. WebMD Mobile includes a symptom checker, conditions, drugs and treatments, and first aid information. 8 Webicina contains curated medical social media that includes over 80 medical topics and 3000 resources. Access Diagnostic Services of Manitoba Lab Information Manual and other reference materials. Dragon Dictation Voice recognition app that allows you to speak and instantly see text. Text can be sent to , SMS message, or even social networking applications. Dropbox 8 Free file storage. Share and sync files online between your computer(s) and iphone. Upload docs (pdf s, photos, etc) to your Dropbox account to have access from your iphone. Create a Dropbox account by going to: 5

6 Adding custom home screen buttons There are many applications that can be added to your iphone that are not downloaded from the itunes App Store, but are instead links to mobile friendly web resources (as indicated by the IE/Firefox/Chrome icon above). 1) Navigate to the resource (i.e. Unbound PubMed) using Safari on your iphone. 2) Select the + from the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. 3) Select Add to Home Screen. 4) Click Add.

7 Keeping Current with Google Reader & RSS What are RSS Feeds? One of the core technologies of the Web is RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Most websites that are updated with any sort of regularity have "news" feeds of at least their headlines, and usually of full articles. Feeds are a way to distribute a website's content well beyond just visitors using browsers. Feeds permit subscription to regular updates, delivered automatically via a news reader, or in some cases good old . Because RSS is so common these days, keeping up with the rush of information that shapes our lives has become pretty easy ( really simple, even). Instead of jumping from one site to another, you can keep track of all the content of the sites you visit regularly in one central place using Google Reader. And RSS feeds don't cram up your inbox. ( For reading news, keeping up with blogs, even tracking packages, little can compare with Google Reader it's easy to add feeds, easy to read them, and easy to organize them. Google Reader offers several advantages. First of all, it integrates tightly with your browser, making it simple to use. Second, you can access your feeds from home or office, and keep your reading in sync between them. Third, you can readily add the Google Reader app to your iphone. Finally, it's all on the web. There's nothing to install or maintain on your computer. And it s free. If you already use any of Google s other services Gmail, Docs and Spreadsheets, Google Groups, or whatever you are already signed up for Google Reader. Just log in with your existing account information. Otherwise, go to Google Reader and create a new account. If you haven t already done so, you can add the Google Mobile App to your iphone by visiting the App Store. The app is free and once you download it, you can click on the Apps icon to find Reader. Add to your Home Screen. Managing Feeds The easiest way to manage feeds is to use Google Reader on your laptop or computer. Adding feeds is a little difficult from the iphone. The preferred method for setup is to use your laptop or desktop computer. However once you have set them up, they is very easy to read and monitor on your iphone. There are many ways to add feeds to Google Reader. Here are some basic methods for beginners: Add feeds manually. If you know the address for a site s RSS feed, you can enter it into Reader yourself by clicking Add subscription on the left hand side of the page and typing or pasting it in directly. Click the link to the RSS feed, however it is indicated on the page. Often an icon, usually orange, will be visible somewhere on a web page. Google Reader users just need to click on a link or the orange RSS icon and the subscription process will begin.

8 8 Look for an Add to Google button. If the webmaster loves you, they ll have put a big Add to Google button on their page, usually somewhere near the inscrutable orange box that indicates an RSS feed. The Add to Google button adds the feed directly to Reader. Now that you know how to use Google Reader, here are some excellent health feeds from reliable sources around the world. Journal RSS Feeds Once of the simplest ways to keep up on the latest developments is to choose RSS feeds for key journals in an area of interest. To find feeds in medicine, we recommend: This handy site organizes all of the available medical RSS feeds. To find out what is available in click on the Publications Directory. From the Medical Publications Directory choose a subject area of interest. Subscribe to the Default to automatically receive all the journal feeds to which this page subscribes. Alternatively, selectively choose the resources to which you want to subscribe by clicking on the Directory tab. 8
