1 Importing (Note: Gray text needs verification) 3DS Max - Merge native MAX files (Same or earlier version). Must select from list. 1. Geometry All 3D object and 2D shapes merge as do associated modifiers. 2. Cameras Merge directly 3. Lighting Merge directly 4. Materials Merge directly (related rendering engine must exist) Older files with materials will display Obsolete (ignore). 5. Mapping Mapped materials merge. Map files must be present. 6. Notes Animation keys will merge as will associated timeline 3d Studio Import native 3DS (and PRJ) files. 1. Geometry Meshes only. 2. Cameras Standard cameras. 3. Lighting Standard lights only. Will need to redo lighting 4. Materials Standard materials only. Will need to reassign. 5. Mapping - Mapped materials import. Map files must be present. Original pre-max (3d Studio) mesh-only format. Currently used as a common format for mesh models Animation may ask to resize active time segment. Click No.
2 AutoCAD - Link or Import native DWG (Same or earlier version as MAX) 1. Geometry - All Entities on a single layer become a single object. 3D Geometry becomes Editable Mesh 2D Geometry becomes Editable spline 3D and 2D on same layer becomes separate objects. 2. Cameras - Cameras are Target cameras, not Physical. 3. Lighting Need to verify in AutoCAD Materials Need to verify in AutoCAD Mapping - Need to verify in AutoCAD Notes Universal Mesh and Vector format. Many programs export DWG s Revit - Link (or Import) native RVT (Same or earlier version as MAX) 1. Geometry - Linked Geometry, modeling in Revit. Can import. Presets: Combine by Revit Material - Brick, Shingles, etc... Combine by Revit Category - Wall, Roof, etc RFA files must be exported as an FBX from the family editor Or placed into a project file (RVT) and linked (or imported) 2. Cameras Although only one 3D view is selected, all are imported. Cameras are Free (not Physical ) cameras. 3. Lighting Legacy mr Daylight system (Daylight System + mr Physical Sky) Sun = San Francisco, noon 6/21 of current year Exposure Control set for Exteriors (EV=15). May need to lower if too dark. 4. Materials - Defined in Revit, "Autodesk" material If combined by material - Single Autodesk materials If combine by category - Multi-sub Autodesk materials 5. Mapping Associated default Revit texture maps may need to be located Mapping best done in Revit
3 Adobe Illustrator Import native AI (Version 8 or older). 1. Geometry - Geometry imported as Editable Spline. Options: Single Object (recommended) One nested Editable spline Multiple Objects Each Editable spline is a separate object 2. Cameras - None 3. Lighting - None 4. Materials None 5. Mapping - None 6. Notes Use limited to importing 2D vector graphics 7. Sketchup Import native SKP (2015 or earlier) 1. Geometry - Faces = 3D Meshes, Edges = 2D Splines Split by layer - All surfaces on an SKP layer = One MAX object If unchecked - Group/Component = a single object 2D and 3D geometry become separate objects 2. Cameras Current view or Scenes = Target, NOT physical cameras. 3. Lighting - Legacy MR Daylight system (Daylight System + mr Physical Sky) Exposure Control set for Exteriors (EV=15) Sun = Boulder, 1:30pm 11/8 of current year 4. Materials "Standard" material(s). Will need to reassign with new materials. If all surfaces on a single layer have: NO material = Single "default" material created and assigned The SAME material = One material MORE than one material = 1 Multi-Sub material 5. Mapping - Creates mapped materials Maps stored in "../sceneassets/images" or user chosen folder. Bakes "tiled" (not real-world scale) coordinates
4 Rhino - Import. Use FBX (NURBS) or IGES/SAT ( Body Objects by npower) formats. 1. Geometry FBX If NURBS option chosen, both surfaces and curves will import. Each surface & curve will be a separate object. Objects on the same layer will be linked to a dummy (helper). Can Link FBX file. Must re-export and overwrite FBX to update IGES Initial Graphics Exchange Specification In Import Settings : Set Convert to Mesh to OFF Set Hierarchy Mode to Using Layer If Using Grouping everything becomes single group. Touching surfaces will be stitched together, regardless of layer Elements = Stitched surfaces Faces = Each original surface SAT Standard ACIS Text In Import Settings : Standard - Each non-joined surface a separate object. Single Body One object Elements = Stitched surfaces Faces = Each surface DWG/3DS Converts NURBS to meshes (triangles). DWG stores layers 2. Cameras - None, Need to create in MAX 3. Lighting - None, Need to create in MAX 4. Materials - None, Need to create in MAX 8. Mapping - None, Need to create in MAX 9. Notes: In MAX, can combine Body Objects Create tab, choose Body Objects in rollout. Select body objects and then click Join Bodies Neither IGES nor SAT will export Rhino curves or meshes
5 Solidworks Import native SLDPRT format (2018). Investigate further 1. Geometry Imports as a Body Object Can also export as IGES or SAT files 2. Cameras -??? 3. Lighting -??? 4. Materials "Standard" material(s). Will need to reassign with new materials. 5. Mapping -??? Everything else Additional formats (Pro-E, Catia, etc ) will import directly. Not verified If native formats not listed and non-nurb, use either DWG or 3DS
